Tropical Fruit Discussion / Rooting Mango Cuttings - Advice needed
« on: October 31, 2022, 04:41:49 PM »
Need advice rooting mango cuttings. I know that rooting cuttings is not the preferred way. I got a little too over zealous and bought more mango scions that I can graft on available trees. I figured instead of letting them go to waste, I would try rooting them. Has anyone tried before? Do I need a warm environment and bottom heat? I want to do this out in my grow shed but its starting to get colder outside. I do have heating mats. I assume some sort of top cover to create a humidity dome. Do they need light while rooting? Figs don’t until the leaves form which is why I am asking.

I have experience rooting passiflora, fig, and a few other type of cuttings.

I was thinking of using the same rooting mix I use for passiflora which is 50% perlite and 50% vermiculite. Here is my thought process:

- Wrap all cuttings in buddy tape

- Scrap an angle at the bottom of the cutting

- Dip in rooting Hormone

- Place in a clear 20 oz cup with slits in the bottom that I use for my other cuttings

- Place plastic bag on top and seal it to the cup to create a humidity dome

- Water but not over saturate the rooting medium

- Place in a tray that has a warming mat underneath it. Not sure what temp to aim for

- Keep out of direct light to help with algae issues until leaves start to form

- Do my rooting dance and pray for good results 😃

I bought a 1-2 year old Cherry of the Rio Grande from Exotica Nursery in Vista CA about a year ago. It has grown a ton from a few feet to now over 6 feet. I have this in the original nursery pot and soil. I want to move it to a bigger pot. Any thoughts on type of soil? I was thinking of using Gary's Top Pot soil as I have a few bags of that.

When I bought it:

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Best low chill pear for Southern California
« on: August 22, 2019, 10:07:48 AM »
I live in coastal Southern California. We get 200 to 250 chill hours a year. I am looking for a low chill pear to plant in my backyard. I prefer a more soft flesh than a crisp one. Looking online I was thinking maybe the pineapple pear would be for me. I will need it also keep it pretty small by summer pruning. I'd like to keep it under 10 ft total. Do you have a pair that you would recommend?

I am looking to buy a strawberry tree in Southern California. Otherwise known as Muntingia calabura or Jamaican Cherry Tree. I would prefer a more established tree if possible. Please let me know if you have one or know where I can find one.

Hello,

I have an actinidia arguta (Male) and a Actinidia arguta 'Issai' (Female). I am looking to adding another hardy kiwi to the mix. Ken's red would be my preference. I am located in Southern Orange County California and looking for a more established plant that will fruit in a year or so. Anyone know where I might be able to find this?

Hello everyone!

First post here. It looks like I will be moving from the Seattle area to coastal southern California. The new hardiness zone is 10b. I am a little depressed because I am leaving behind my hardy kiwis which are on their second year. I will never see them fruit. I wanted to see if anyone in coastal southern Cali has been successful in growing hardy kiwi in that area? I know you can grow some normal fuzzy kiwis, but they are not quite as fun ;)
