Brevard is in evacuation mode.. The bridges will be  shut down and the ship has no place to go but into a Hurricane

I would plan accordingly

My fairchild was loaded this year and has never had a drop of any spray on it.

Big bloom and biggest crop so far.   Smaller mango is the biggest drawback imo.

I was just at Adams and his rio's are much bigger than mine.   Mine are quarter size so go from there.  Half again longer at least.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Caught a fruit thief
« on: May 03, 2016, 07:25:13 AM »
Last year my plum tree was loaded.  It was pretty much its grand finale and I will be taking it out this year after many years of great fruit.

I took pictures of the fruit but wanted to wait one more day to let them tree ripen to the point I like them best but they were gone the next morning.  A neighbor came over and said a woman stopped her car in the road, got out and picked your fruit.  The car driving thiefI have no patience with.

On the other hand a few years back a young pregnant woman looked at my plums  as she walked by on her way somewhere but she did not come up into the yard even though she looked hungry.   I saw her coming back from wherever she had been a coulpe hours later and she walked up and took one plum.   I walked out and she got that look of fear on her face and I handed her a bag and helped her pick more fruit.

The plums I gave were as great a joy as they ones I ate.   Red plums close to the road are a temptation and I plan to plant three this year so a lot closer to the house this time.

From the same notes, we had the Dupius rated higher than the FH with the Sunset getting the same rating as the FH.   All pretty good mango, imo.

We got our fruit from Doc Campbell in june the weekend of the spice park fest.

Looking forward to trying the E and M -4.  We had about ten other people tasting with us.  That is how our group rated it.

There were two of us that liked the G-32 better than the CC.  Myself and one who is allergic to coconut and can't handle anything that tastes like it.

The girlfriend likes PPK more than all the ones we tried, to each their own.

We bought a couple at Fairchild in Homestead this past season. From our notes it was scored a 4 1/2 out of five stars for taste.  Then we started on the coconut creams which got 6 stars.  Glad we did the FH's first.

Hard to get the tasters back on anything after the CC's came out.

Good tasting fruit, just on that second tier of taste imo behind the usual suspects.

I have blueberry next to a mango tree.  I built a box with three ten foot, two by twelves and filled it with peat and pine.  The raised bed allows me to keep the bed acidic for the berry, while not having to change the rest of the area.

Grapes and surinam cherries are in there also but are doing fine almost touching the berry bed.  Things like blueberry like lots of acid and it is much easier to put all your acid plants together or put them in the same bed than try to do one here and there.

Got to make sure the peat you use is not ph adjusted...

The Dupuis, Edgar and PPK were in our top ten last season for taste.

You have a great list of fruit, enjoy.

Bought a Pitangatuba from Adam Saturday.   He has a cherry of rio grande that looks twice as big as mine.  So yes, there are a lot of differences in the tree you buy and shape and size of the fruit.

I haven't had any dieback issues with mine, knock on wood, so far.

Cherry of Rio Grande is the one that has the best flavor of the ones I grow.

I like the Black Surinam over the Red.   The Grumachama is only a touch better and the Barbados just different but good in its own way.  The Rio tops them all in may yard.  Just more cherry like to me.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Lychee Bloom S. Fla. 2016
« on: April 20, 2016, 07:26:01 AM »
Last season Toppy on Merritt Island had two mango blooms and neither set.  He said it was too cold both times.  However, on the same property he had one of his biggest Lychee crops in some time.

Looks to me like the Lychee likes a bit of cooler temps.  My Sweetheart  bloomed big this year and I will have a handful of fruit it looks like.  It is four feet high.

I have no idea how to baby a Lychee.  No sprays or drenches.  But I get a lot more chilling hours than further south.

My Fairchild has a better than average set.  I most likely could get a bigger set with spraying on this one.

My Young is loaded without any spraying.  Had 11 fruit from it last season in its first season of fruit.   This year I have that many per panicle.  Clean as a whistle and loaded with marbles.

Gave my carrie tree away.   Dug it up and planted it in a buddies yard and put in a fruit punch instead.

Lost a year but the too soft Carrie had to go and I needed the room for better tasting fruit imo.

We bought Edward from Alex last year and hope to this year and they were great.

Got Edgars from Walter Zills fruit stand later in the year and they are great also.   I like the firmer fleshed types best.   So this one rates higher for my tastes.

Neem wil do the job.    Fleas hate it and won't get on a dog that has that smell.  It also kills cats,

Problem solved.  If you like your cat, don't wash them with neem.  Best thing for fleas on dogs I  have tried.

I borrowed a trap from a cat group to catch a feral cat, they had it fixed for free and I kept it for critter control outside.   Jinx has earned his keep.

I bought my own trap due to raids on my Fairchild mango.   Caught 10 raccoon and 11 possums last season and have two possums this spring.  Against the law to move a raccoon however.  I am hoping for a light sentence as I let them all go, a long way from my mango.

We will be coming down to buy some of those when they are ready...   Edwards are a great way to start the season.

They transplant pretty well.   The original pickering at Walter Zills has been moved three times I think they said.

Just do the least amount of harm possible to the roots system and you should be good with care.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: New mango trees
« on: April 14, 2016, 08:17:02 AM »
I am mid state so my conditions are even hotter than the coast with wet and humid conditions all summer.

Wet winter also this season.

I am really glad I bought a Tebow mango.    I had just finished finding out how great the mango could be we grow ourselves and ran across a mango tree named Tebow.    I didn't buy and went back and found it at pine island and read abut it before  I went back and bought it.

It was in the ground for a couple years when I found out what I really had was a Young.  Never sprayed, it is full of fruit that get big with a flavor as good if not better than most of the non elite types.

I can see the tree from where I am typing and it is loaded this year.    I could have been mad at being fooled but I never would have bought the tree in the first place if the name had been the same.  It would have faded into its past while now it is downright popular.

Brevard County Fruit club is having its tree sale next weekend.  A year ago they had thirty "Tebow's" for sale.  Most of any type.  So while they may be selling them with a new name still, it is good the people are getting a pretty good mango in the Young.

I put it on the easy to care for list for sure in my conditions.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: What is the best longan?
« on: April 13, 2016, 06:42:11 AM »
The FE's are pretty uniform in size.   Seed may be close to standard size and just the smaller fruit makes it look bigger.  Didn't think to compare seed size with each other.

Same grower had Kohala's for sale and they were much bigger.   His Biew Kiews followed the Lychee and were first of the Longan season for him if I remember correctly.    They were in between the FE and Kohala in size.   Like them better than the Kohala.   Like the FE more than the Bk's.

I haven't tried the Tiger eye that I know of.    But have had enough fortune eyes to know they are the smallest fruit of the longans we had last season   Very big seed to boot   Flavor is different than the other as well, each of the others tasted similar to me but the FE is just a bit different.  It is the best tasting of the ones I have tried.

The tree was the last of the longans to ripen also.

Nokomis just south of Sarasota has a lot of plusses.   You can find some higher ground not far from the beach.  Small town, has its own public beach with lifeguard. Casey Key is the island at Nokomis.

Between Venice and Sarasota in Sarasota county, Nokomis is what you are looking at when you look across the pass from Venice.    Lots of places to eat you can go to by boat.

You have the culture of Sarasota if that is needed and closer to Tampa if you have to commute.

Trade off is cooler temps than the further south location of Naples.    Worth a look if you are through the area.

Thanks.

It looks like it will hold fruit this year so I hope to try another soon.

I gave Malika more than a fair chance as I had one planted and wanted to taste it as much as possible.   Still prefer other types way more but I plan to grow some fruit on it now that it has size.   It is still in bloom and is doing well.      I am in no hurry to take it out with possible fruit on the way.

Rather have an edgar, honey kiss or a half dozen others, however.
