what varieties of grapes taste and grow best in so. FL?
« on: August 31, 2013, 07:35:28 AM »
A while back, i bought some muscadines from publix to try (bad move i know lol) and was unimpressed with the flavor and texture.  Recently tried some yellowish/bronze ones on the fence that borders my yard....and they were as good as any grapes i have tasted.  I also got burgundy bunch grapes (PIN) and alachua.
1.  What grapes are you growing in broward/miami-dade?
2.  The tag says the alachua has black skin but i thought when i got it, they said it would have bronze skin.  Does alachua have black skin?
3.  Are there a few varieties i could get to prolong the harvest season like with other fruits (ex.  rosigold to Neelam for mangoes)?

My Ison's black muscadine is going well and is ripe right now. It is picked when dead black, not purple. Ison nursery is in Georgia and  this must be a favorite they developed. This late in the year Ison tastes better than my backyard mangoes such as my Kent, Keitt, Gold Nugget fruits still hanging in there on the tree at this late date. The Ison potted vines are available locally (PM me if interested)

Tari's burgundy grape gets good reviews as a half northern and half muscadine cultivar.  I bought one in 3 gallon today at Bender's Grove. Mike Bender told me Pine Island is now culturing them, a new thing for them. Mike also told me he would soon (4 weeks) have Noble muscadine potted vines too via Pine Island.

Muscadine grapes don't get enough respect here (forum) or in south Florida

Ison muscadine. Mine are ripe right now. From the famous Ison muscadine nursery in Georgia. Pine Island seems to propagate them. If a nursery names it's top grape after itself then ....they must have a high opinion of it. Isons sells other muscadines too

Here is a good chart of Muscadine variety information:
https://www.isons.com/wp-content/uploads/2016/07/Muscadine_Chart.pdf

The Muscadine FB group I'm on most people rate "Black Beauty" & "Supreme" best but they need a self fertile variety like Ison or Lane to set fruit.
