It only happens if I use my laptop, haven't encountered this same problem on my phone though.

Yea, it's working fine on my phone too. That's why I think it may just be one of the nodes down.

We may have to restore from a back up..

I hope not. I think it is likely a server issue and not one on our end. Let's see if it doesn't resolve itself in a day or two.

I will post regular updates of my new fruit brix tests in this post.

Tonight(2/26/12) I tested some M. vexator fruit. The brix was around 12.5.

Wednesday (3/14/12) I tested cherimoya, jaboticaba, dried sapodilla, apples, and some sort of orange. Harry will fill in the apple and orange variety later.

yes, been having errors also.  Also have received security warning messages.

I doubt any of the security warning messages are related to this site. Most likely an issue on your end.

I noticed it yesterday myself. When doing a traceroute of the website some of the nodes timed out. I am not sure if that is causing the intermittent server reset problems.

Yes having that problem posting. Works on the second go round.
Oscar

Hmmm.. I called the hosting company and they said they do not see any errors on their end. They said it may be a localized problem but since you are having the problem in HI, it is likely something else. If the problem does not go away in a day or two, we will have to figure out how to fix it...

Is anyone else getting the connection was reset message?

Also, is anyone else having problems posting new messages?

A few members have reported having problems so I am just checking to see how widespread the problem is.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Red Custard Apples Florida
« on: February 26, 2012, 09:32:13 PM »
In the mid-1980's, Laurence Zill, sometimes accompanied by his son Gary, collected red Annona reticulata varieties in Belize and northern Guatemala.  These Custard-Apple varieties he usually named after the town or community where he got graftwood.  These included 'Sarteneja' from the town of Sartenaja, 'Chonox,' 'Benque,' 'Canul,' and 'San Pablo,' all from Belize (so not from a state of Brazil), and Tikal (not from the actual ruins).   Gary Zill later returned alone to northern Guatemala and collected the 'El Remate,' 'Tart,' and 'León,' named in honor of Dr. Jorge León, eminent plant collector in Central America, who provided us with a lot of initial guidance.

The Zills sent me to western Guatemala several times.  I collected varieties of ilama, Annona diversifolia, including 'Genova Red,' and Genova White,' both from the town of Genova, 'Guillermo' from the yard of a man by that name near Retahuleu, and 'Pajapita' from the town of that name near the border with Mexico.

On cold hardiness--- several degrees of difference can be made by the general condition of the plant and the abscence or presence of other stressing factors, and by presence or lack of frost-nucleating bacteria or other particles.

Are these varieties available anywhere? It seems that only a few of all the varieties collected is still available?

Also, is the town in Belize called Sarteneja or Sarteneja? The only town in Belize that I've been able to find is Sarteneja. Would that change the common pronunciation of the fruit name?

I ate an orangish-red jak at Excalibur that was delicious that I ate all the rag and all the inner peel!  I haven't had any other Jak that had a tasty inner peel.

Interesting. Do you know if that is the new Excalibur Red?

Har, did you see the post I made for your new business in the buy sell trade section? http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=160.msg1804#msg1804

Actually looking at my notes, the one that nurseries most carry, is not M cauliflora, its M. jaboticaba.

The two are almost indistinguishable to the untrained eye (and even to a trained eye!)

M. jaboticaba fruits are always sweet, never acid (where cauliflora has acid varieties like Ponhema)
Also caulifora is generally a shorter tree, with slightly larger leaf and fruit.

Good luck telling the difference!  Chances are, it's M. jaboticaba, sabarah...Hate to break it to you all, but the trees you have from PIN, Hopkins, and most other nurseries in USA, are mislabeled as M. cauliflora. ;D :'( ;D

I'm sure I'll catch heat for saying this, but you can suck my "assu paulista" pulp. ;) ;D :-X :P

That is very interesting. Pretty much every nursery has it listed as M. cauliflora. When do you think the original mislabeling happened?

Even Morton has the sabara listed as a M. cauliflora species.

that figures! who know what these nursery guys are passing as a Florida Red Atemoya. Is there even a red atemoya?

JF

There are redder atemoya x custard apple crosses. Not sure if there any pure atemoyas that are red.

Weird.  I asked for my money back and they refunded me.   I called http://www.justfruitsandexotics.com - they don't have the milsweet but they have the SANBOKAN LEMON  which is another sweet lemon.  Anyway, BEWARE of oasis tropicals

Excalibur has the sanbokan lemon. Might be easier than mail ordering a tree.

Another use for the meter is to measure the brix of the leaves of plants as a way to monitor the health of the plant, you squeeze the leaves until you get some "juice". and measure that.

Sounds interesting. I will have to look into that. I guess I would compare a sick leaf to a healthy leaf?

Oscar,
I will look into both of those sources. Thanks.

Nullzero,
I think I will need to make another spreadsheet specifically for the info you list. That might even be better suited for the wiki.

OMG...is that what happened.  I swear I was getting countless advertisemnts in Potuguese from Brasilian senders.  I couldn't imagine how that happened.  It got to the point that I blocked all incoming email with a .br at the end.

Harry

So.. you two are visiting the same Brazilian sites  ;)

This is interesting. While it would take a bit of effort to do it regularly, i'd like to see some brix tests in future on the fruit you eat, if you don't mind.

As Harry pointed out, I will gladly keep the forum updated on my future brix tests. I think I may just make one post that I update as I do new tests.

hahahaha    actually I really want to know the Okrung's reading from Harry's tree.

Are the three readings from 3 different segments, murahilin?

Yup. Three segments from the same fruit.

I will test all of Harry's mangos that I can this summer. I will like to compare different mangos grown in different yards. So for example, Jeff's glenn compared to Harry's glenn. I was really looking forward to a Lemon Zest competition but no one else seems to have any LZ blooms.

I suggest trying to make it a comprehensive list, and just leave blank the ones nobody is selling. It means a lot of boxes will be blank, but this will be easier than trying to add species as vendors add them to items they are selling. Also it might encourage vendors and collectors to try to get some of the species they've never heard of.
Oscar
Thanks for the help Oscar. It almost doubled the original list I started off with even after removing the duplicates.

I agree. I am trying to make it as comprehensive as possible. I plan to go through the indexes of all the books on tropical fruit I have and add every single fruit that is not already on the list. Brazilian Fruits by Lorenzi has over 600 species listed but I am not sure how many are already on the list. I will start with a page or two a day until I add the entire book. Then I will go to the Encyclopedia of Fruit and Nut and see how much I can add from that list. I hope to make the most comprehensive list available.

Been adding to the list, however I have been sticking to fruiting plants that are more edibility to them. Added numerous cactus fruit entries with fruit diameter +2".

Totally agree which is why we have to try to sift through which fruits have decent edibility to them. If a fruit has a pit which is inedible and takes 90% of the fruit, I would chalk that up as not worthy of making the list. Fruits smaller then blueberries I skip over as well.

Also have to consider taste, if a fruit is extremely bitter then it has little use except medicinal. Adding an edibility ranking would help prioritize the fruits. For example an apple would rank 5/5, where as a wild Vitus grape with large seed and low pulp a 2/5.
Even if a fruit is not all that edible I would like to add it because as we've discussed in another post, with a little bit of breeding many of these inedible fruits could be greatly improved. Also, what's rated low edibility for one person may be delicious to another.

You are either more obsessive or have more time than me.  :o
Anyways I did a brief start to a similar list, and since I am fascinated by Taxonomy I have the family listed for each:
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AqoBKzfSt0AudDNoTERDenhBNUFSbXZQZ1pxUzJTVkE

Also, since we are doing Google docs thought I'd point out my obsessively complete fruiting plant patent list I compiled last year to prove my fruit obsession  8)
https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0AqoBKzfSt0AudEw2NHpyY3ViWnBEWkhtaHdoWnZib3c
I think I may just have more free time...

I like the plant patent list. We should make one of those for all the mangos that have ever been patented. What other tropical/subtropical fruit has been patented often in the US?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Growing Mango from Seed

Hi John :)

I'm no expert - far from it.  ;D  Because of all the contradictions on the web, i'm too scared to remove any shoots at all!   ;D

A quick google yielded several websites that said to keep the smallest stalks:

http://www.ehow.com/how_7105872_do-grow-mango-tree-plant_.html
http://www.abc.net.au/gardening/stories/s2164092.htm
http://www.gardenguides.com/80585-grow-mango-plant-seed.html

Can anyone shed some light on this topic?   ;D ;D ;D

What are your intentions for the seedlings? Are you planning on using them as rootstock for grafting? If so, separate them all and keep them. If you are growing it for good fruit quality, I have no idea. Are these all from Kensington Pride fruit?

Hey,
I am working on a list of fruit trees and sources for seeds and trees and I need help in making it the most complete list possible. I have it in a google doc right now and everyone is welcome to add to it.  Feel free to anything you would like to it. Please do not delete anything. Thanks!

Here is the google doc of it:https://docs.google.com/spreadsheet/ccc?key=0Aoy4d4hcUHo3dGppM3kyc2RXYmtxQUxTS2FUSXhPZmc

Number of fruits on list: 895

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Dekopon Brix Test
« on: February 23, 2012, 08:32:29 PM »
Today I stopped by Harry's office to test the brix of some dekopon fruit that he received in the mail. Thank you Harry and thank you shipper of dekopon for giving me the chance to try this fruit.

The fruit was pretty good. It's my new favorite mandarin. I can't remember if I liked the pixie tangerines I had last year more though.

Anyways, the brix was not as high as I read they should be. We only tested one fruit so it may not have been as sweet as others usually are but the brix was only around 11. I read that dekopons were around 14+.

Since this was my first time ever using my refractometer it could have been user error in messing up the results but I followed the directions in the book.

We also tested an apple that was at 13.2 brix.

Here are some pics.

Just leave them alone. I've had them for years without a noticeable reduction in fruit set. Has anyone here had a noticeable reduction in fruit set from these beetles?
