Hello, I currently have a Reed, which is type A. Do I need a type B avocado to set fruits? Should I plan a Marcus Pumpkin avocado, type B? Thank you

Never had a problem or paid much attention to having Type A/B. But I live in an area with lots of Avocado trees.

Today I had my first Sharwil and I was in complete heaven I have to believe this is the most ideal texture to any avocado. I also have green gold, yamagata and several other unnamed varieties that I have picked from trees off the road or are seedlings grow from someone's backyard and sold at farmers markets.
With all these excellent varieties on the island why do we California avocado guys not see them grown or sold?

Sharwil is fairly common with CRFG hobbyist growers. I grafted some Sharwil scion wood recently.

Anyone like to take a guess on the chance of this being a Megalanthus cross? Red flesh fruit, no spikes, self pollinating. From Vietnam apparently.

My guess NOT a Megalanthus cross.

Are images / photographs "implicitly" copyrighted, ie, if I upload a random picture from my camera to instagram with no claim of copyright, is it a violation of copyright law for someone to utilize it?

Yes.

This is clearly wrong on many issues.  The main one being it is borderline fraud because it looks like Ceder Bay Cherry is the seller.
Enforcement is up to Kevin.  I would start with submitting a complaint to eBay.
As far as using your copyright pictures without your permission, this is wrong but done all the time. Don't expect any compensation for their use... but you should expect credit for there use, which is usually leaving your name or company's name on the photo (which it looks like they did).

Just when you think you might know everything about the Mexican Avocado variety.

I apologize if this has already been previously posted.

Saying "yellow" Dragon Fruit is very misleading. Not all yellow Dragon Fruit is very sweet. I have been told that 100s of small farm Dragon Fruit growers in Asia have invested in planting the wrong yellow Dragon Fruit.

First, you need to learn the difference between the three most popular yellow Dragon Fruit varieties (and their cultivars).

Yellow skin Hylocereus undatus.

Hylocereus megalanthus.

The recently imported Ecuador "Palora" Dragon Fruit. The jury is still out on if Palora is just a Giant Megalanthus variety, or some new hybrid.

Do some more research to make sure you get the yellow skinned Dragon Fruit variety you want.

There a good video on Yang Mei and development in Fremont, CA.   Lets Find Out Episode #17 Y. Chen

Back in the mid-90's, Sun World bought 120,000  3-gallon 'Keitt' mangos from Florida and planted them near the Salton Sea.  I wonder how they are doing.

I've had the yellow Megalanthus fruits from different countries and I notised a slite difference in appearance and taste. One was sugar sweet with no other flavor and the other one had a sweet lemonade like flavor which I liked more. Had anyone else tasted one with the lemonade flavor?

There is an acid/sugar ratio that is different.  I have not heard the "lemonade flavor" used much.

Is there any advantage/disadvantage to cutting it back during the winter while dormant?
Kevin

I think the only disadvantage would be less fruit the first year after cutting back during the winter.

Thanks ricshaw,

Didn't know the skin was edible. So this looks like a new cultivar. Google knows nothing about it, Lol.

ONLY THE MEXICAN VARIETIES!!

Brad,
Sorry I didn't think to take photos. The size and shape is like that of the smaller Haas that are sold "8 for $1" along Highway 152 in Gilroy, CA. Exterior is completely shiny, black, even when unripe. Color stayed the same after ripening. Interior is lush green like Haas. I've never heard of "Spencer", but the seller told me that name. It was sold at a Farmer's Market, by the folks at Murray Family Farms in Bakersfield.

I have met and am "friends" with Steven Murray on Facebook. I will send him a message and ask details on Spencer Avocado.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Where can I get a Tice Mulberry?
« on: December 05, 2018, 12:48:29 PM »
I became interested in planting a Mulberry tree after visiting Mulberry Haven in Ojai, CA.
Mulberry Haven is a renamed Mulberry orchard with 66 mature mulberry trees of the cultivars Riviera, Oscar, Persian, Pakistani and Wellington.
The original founding farmers Gordon and Marie Kennedy planted the orchard in the late 1970s.
In addition they planted unique trees like carob, che berry, sapote, sunshine grapefruit, cherry-plum and natives such as Catalina cherry to fill their orchard.

Attach is some pictures of some of the Mulberry trees that they maintain at reasonable heights.

anyone know which variety produce more fruits or maybe better taste or generally which you think its better

I do not think you can go wrong with Paul Thomson's 8-S (or S-8), renamed "Sugar Dragon".

Kind of like that.

I'm not sure if this is necessarily the best way to do it, as there's only about 1 square inch in-between each slat. It would go well with the rest of the house though, and look a bit nicer (especially important as it's by my neighbor's front yard).  What do you think?

If that is vinyl plastic Privacy Screen, I agree with spaugh.

So just as long as it can't grow up it'll fruit? That's good. Do you think allowing it space to grow horizontally while it can still grow up is a bad idea?

You mean like a grape trellis?

Dragon Fruit does NOT need to grow up about 6 feet to fruit.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: GEM avocado in Los Angeles area?
« on: October 17, 2018, 02:46:55 PM »
FYI: The GEM Avocado was named after commercial Dragon Fruit grower Gray Martin. GEM is his initials.

A picture of Gray on the Left.

Ricshaw, whats the patent or legalities surrounding propogation of gem avo trees?  Any ideas?  I would propogate some of these trees but don't want anyone kicking my door in at 3am or sending me a million dollar fine.  Seems like a lot of people are asking for it.

I think it is a Patent variety. That depends, I am not an expert... Do you plan on selling trees labeled GEM?

BTW: Gray Martin DOES NOT own the patent. I think the University Of California and/or Brokaw does.
