Choquette,Monroe,Lula. Which One!!!
« on: February 07, 2013, 08:54:38 AM »
Would like to hear which Avacodo you would recommend for Central East Florida Zone 9a out of the three I have listed, and why. Would like a good eating Avacodo that can stand 24f degree temps.

Thanks, Joe.

Lula...Brogdon and Bacon would also work with those temps.

I would recommend Monroe. Although I don't know if it will work with the temperatures that you're talking 'bout; 24f, wow, that's a little insane.
I've learned from forum members, that it will hold fruit on the tree as late as January and February. To me, man, that is a nice!  8)
I'm considering getting it myself.

Many avocados will hold their fruit for an extended time.  Last week I picked two Lula and yesterday, I just picked the final Lula from a tree in Palm Beach County.

From ECHO:

Avocado Cultivar      Minimum Temperature (°F)

Brogdon                               22

Winter Mexican                      22

Custer's Red                         24

Day                                      25

Marcus Pumpkin                     25

Lula                                      25

Choquette                             26

Tonnage                                26

Russell                                  32

While Bacon is not on this list, I know from first had statements from people growing in distinct climates that is has one of the lowest tolerances temperature wise.

A friend's Choquette tree had a bumper crop this year.  We've been eating them for several weeks, and there are many left on the tree so we'll probably continue eating them for another month.  He didn't use any nitrogen so they're staying on the tree quite well.  Although the flavor continues to improve over the course of the season, I have to be honest--CHOQUETTE IS A VERY WATERY AVOCADO.  NOT MUCH OIL CONTENT. :(  I don't think I'd ever recommend this variety to anyone who seeks a fine-flavored avocado.

John would not surprice me to see that Choquette holding fruit to well into January or February that get huge. On the quality I agree with you. Monroe is the best late fruit.

So Choquette is a better smoothie fruit? I was thinking of using some avocados as smoothie fruits.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Welcome back Rob.Now Monroe will not take the cold at all.Lula and Choquette a little better.Your best bet
Day although small has excellent flavor and will take the cold. Brogdon and Florida Hass produce well and will take the cold. I have a Bacon took the cold but has not produced fruit yet

I love both the Day and the Lula, but the Day wins hands down.

What I've been able to gather about Monroe, is that when not fertilized, it'll hold fruit well into most of January (or beyond?).

As for Lula's that have not been fertilized, I picked the last Lula off a tree this year on March 12 (the exact date is on another thread: Mango and/or Avocado 24/7).

If you can, get'm both in a avocado cocktail tree (act), get 'Monroe' and 'Lula.' If you want only one tree, graft a budwood of one cultivar onto the other cultivar.
