Need Help Identifying!
« on: September 29, 2013, 12:57:39 AM »
Hello can anyone please help me identify this fruit?  While driving to work I spotted this tree with these fruit on it.  I looked online to see if I could find the name of this it but have not had any luck. I thought it was a Kei Apple at first but the tree has no thorns and the seeds don't appear to look the same as a kei apple.  I then thought it might be a Loquat but the leaves don't look too be the same as any pictures ive seen online.  The seeds do look like they could be from a Loquat but the shape of thr fruit is not the same.  Any thoughts?

I have also been trying to get a solid ID on this, here in the DR, someone that has this tree, called it Lucuma, obviously its not the Pouteria lucuma, from Peru.

if we are talking about the same one, let me ask you, did you taste it? does it have a pasty consistency, with a slightly sweet maple taste?

Tropicdude- Have not tried it yet was afraid of eating something I could not ID.

Luisport -  I think thats it.  It has a really long stem like in the picture and the leaves look the same as the tree I found.

Has anyone ever tasted it before?

Thanks everyone for the quick response! !

Taste similar to a pasty eggfruit. Not a great fruit, but certainly edible. There seems to be a lot of different sub species of the same tree, so some might be a lot better than others. The one i had was not so great.

so i have found pictures of balata that look like this...

but also like this... http://toptropicals.com/catalog/uid/Manilkara_bidentata.htm

there's a confusion but the first pictures are more reliable?

the beach apricot...well http://i262.photobucket.com/albums/ii108/7_Heads/Trees/Mimusops_maxima_02.jpg

more likely to be a beach apricot.

Am I seeing a hard shell, or a thick skin? Such a beautiful fruit, seed does remind me of lucuma, but that clear pulp is something! It doesn't match the original fruit pics, who's flesh seemed to have a light pinkish hue, perhaps an unripe fruit? The other links look more like it, but with darker pulp. The heavy variation seems to solve our problem, is this something about the ripeness, or actual genetic differences?

Manilkara bidentata and Mimusops balata are two different species. Many people often confuse them. The pic you posted is of Manilkara bidentata and the original pic in this post looks like Mimusops balata.

Both mimusops and manilkara are in same family: sapotaceae, but they are totally different genus. Manilkara is same genus as chico sapodilla. If you look at second photo you can see the seeds inside the fruit look like chico seeds, black and flattened.
