Refrigerated mango -- viable seed?
« on: August 21, 2015, 01:20:28 PM »
Would refrigerating a mango affect the viability of the pit?

So far I haven't taken a chance, but am curious, as I wouldn't have to eat 4 mangos today.

You could always take your chance and find out -OR- if you are really worried and the seed is as important as the flesh, cut the flesh off in two cheeks and tightly wrap the flesh with plastic wrap and refrigerate the flesh and the seed will be good to go.

Thanks, Rob.  I like that second idea.

Personally i would say that seeds should be fine, 3-4°C that you can ecounter in a fridge are the norm my mango experience every winter, and such kind of temperature don't worry me much. Problem can happen if they last several days, i guess.

I have tired to germinate seeds from refrigerated mangoes & found that you have a much better germination rate if you don't refrigerate.... So go with what Rob says & get best of both worlds...... Mike

I've refrigerated many of my mangos prior to eating and I get excellent germination rate although I don't know the exact percentages. I would say that at least 80-90% of my seeds germinate. They like a lot of heat to germinate.

Refrigeration won't hurt mango seeds as long as they don't get too cold or they are refrigerated for very long. What is too cold? Anything close to freezing will kill the seeds. So refrigerate them in warmest part of fridge: produce area, usually at bottom of fridge. What is too long? If mangoes are starting to rot than that is too long.

I agree that the lower temp (definitely not subfreezing temp) and longer duration of refrigeration likely will significantly reduce germination chance.

I would like to add that I only typically refrigerate my mangos for 1-3 days before consumption and get excellent germination rates.
