Garcinia paniculata / sopsopia
« on: October 06, 2015, 02:30:40 PM »
let's get a thread going in the discussion that's dedicated to this species from India (kind member Roy-Ind)...here is a thread in the for sale section where we have been talking about it already

http://tropicalfruitforum.com/index.php?topic=11508.0

I have been growing it for about 1.5 yrs now?

they took a while to germinate, I thought the seeds had rotted, but they popped up over 3 months after planting...

I have about 4 seedlings that were all planted in the same pot.

the time finally came to separate them last week....one of the four was about 2ft tall, the other two were about 1ft tall, and one was less than 5 inch tall, looked like it just sprouted.

I was really worried about killing the trees, because I really damaged the fragile long roots when I separated them....but it looks like they are going to recover just fine.  It's nice to know they are not super fragile.

they don't seem sensitive to city water, or high pH.

also survived cold temps of about 34F...so i'm guessing a freeze of 32F isn't going to harm a mature tree.

I'm really excited about this rare Garcinia...I''ll post some pics later.

Adam your ahead of me , 1 month since germination. I noticed you clipped the leaves, was it to conserve moisture after the repotting?

yes i clipped the leaves on a few of the plants that really had some severe damage to the roots.

I must have clipped off about 6 inches of new growth from one of them....that was because the tree lost about half of its root system.

if you damage the roots, you should also remove some shoots...it definitely helps them recover faster.

i suppose this is because the plant loses moisture through the surface area of the leaves.

Ive got three of them, about 1.5 years old as well. I will agree with you Adam in that they seem to be a pretty hardy plant. Another one that I received from Roy was the Garcinia kydia, and it sees to be just as strong a plant as the paniculata. I have been growing both of them in partial shade so far, and was wondering if they will be able to take full sun now.

Cheers,
Richard

I had mine in very bright but filtered light, they seemed to be reaching out for more sunlight...

I think they can handle full sun, but I'm afraid to hurt them.

I always play it safe with rare Garcinias and wait until they are over 3-4ft tall.

These are the ones Roy had listed as G. sopsopia, correct?  If I recall correctly, these have been lumped with paniculata but are supposedly superior to paniculata from what I have heard.  Mine (as well as my other Indian Garcinias, kydia & morella) have been growing well but slowly -- however, I have been growing them too shady & need to get them some more light.  Some of these Indian Garcinia were very slow to germinate.

Roy had mentioned these may be able to be container grown.  You guys think it would be possible to grow and Fruit these in a container?  I'm in zone 7 with crazy hot, humid summers but would have to bring them indoors for winter for sure.  Just curious, would love to have something a little rarer/harder to find fruiting here.  Just a curious newbie though cuz I'm guessing it will be next spring or summer before I could get Seeds from Roy

i have a feeling it will get too large to keep in a pot indefinitely...it may be manageable for about 10 yrs, but eventually it will need a very large pot (50 gal or larger)...or it will die.

Adam,

Its looking really nice. Here is a 8 month old seedling. I pinched off the central leader a few times and got some branching on it. I have a few other seedlings around the same age.

This looks like a really interesting variety of Garcinia.  Does anyone know how large the tree gets or at what size it starts fruiting?  From the pictures it looks like a rather fast growing variety.

Garcinia sopsopia is the correct name and Garcinia paniculata a synonym.

that's awesome to see a rare species being shared and propagated. How long you think until fruiting age?

look like flowers on one of the G. sopsopia/paniculata after 3yr...

notice the 3 spherical objects at the tips of the branches (I was expecting flowers to emerge from the caulis like G. intermedia)

Three years? That freaking amazing! Do you have enough seedlings to see if it would be graft compatible? Or do you have ideas of what it may compatible with? As always, thanks for sharing.

thanks!
I was surprised..I'm still somewhat in disbelief..lol..maybe they will turn out to be deformed leaves.. :D

but they sure do look like flowers...

not sure what i'd graft this onto, for now, i'd rather not experiment...it seems precocious enough from seed.
