Another cactus fruit, Cereus jamacaru
« on: September 15, 2014, 01:48:03 PM »
I have been eating a lot of cactus apples over the last few weeks, but yesterday I  just picked the first fruit off my Cereus jamacaru, with for more to come in the next few weeks.

The best thing about this one is the coloration,  it looks like a mini mango!  Taste wise, it is much like most of the C.preuvianus I have tried, and it looks like the fruit might end up being larger than the preuvianus plants I have.  With the heat and the drought, this is definitely a keeper.

Next up, Stenocereus pruinosis in a few weeks.

Cheers,
Richard

Richard,

Congrats on the fruit, has some nice size to it as well. Can't wait to see the other update from the Stenocereus pruinosis.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

Cool! Regarding the taste, would you rate it higher then pitaya/dragon fruit?
Have you tried to germinate cereus seeds?

From New Fruits for Arid Climates:
https://www.hort.purdue.edu/newcrop/ncnu02/pdf/mizrahi.pdf

"Among the various columnar cacti we believe that the most promising one is Cereus peruvianus Britton and Rose, which might be the same species as the Cereus jamacaru (Nerd et al. 1993; Mizrahi and Nerd 1999; Gutman et al. 2001)."

Thank you for sharing your opinion with us.

By "Mexicana Pitahya", do you mean Stenocereus queretaroensis ?.

I love the look of this fruit. It's like some popsicle from my childhood. :)

Luis,

Here is a picture of my plant. It looks very much like my C. peruvianus (like the one in the background), but has deeper furrows on the wings and different shape/color fruit.

Felipe and EvilFruit,

These fruits are good, I think better than your average white fleshed dragon fruit, but not as good as some of the pinks/reds I have tried. I do have a cutting of a Cereus that has a very distinct rose water flavor to it and it is wonderful.  I have used pollen from this plant to pollenate dragon fruit to see if the crosses are fertile, and if this flavor component can be brought in.  Personally I like all the cactus fruits I have tried so far, and am looking forward to trying the Stenocereus sp.  If they taste as good as they look...

Richard,

Rose flavored Cereus sp. Fruit sounds interesting. Would love to try a fruit or cutting sometime in the future. I am very interested in the potential cereus sp. X dragon fruit. Columnar dragon fruit would be amazingly nice.

Is C. peruvianus like O. ficus indica?  A domesticated cactus with lots of different forms (hybrids)?

Cereus crosses easily I believe with other Cereus sp. I have heard that it can even cross with other Genus that have similar flower biology (hence the Hylocereus sp. cross potential).

There is really a lot of great possibilities with crosses from Cereus sp. into Hylocereus sp. and other experimental possible columnar cactus such as Corryocactus brevistylus (for that flavor boost in citrus acid taste). If it can't cross the flowers, then a graft union Tissue culture might be another interesting way (especially when trying to get Opuntia sp. into the mix). Since you can graft Opuntia sp. with Epis and should be possible with Cereus sp. as well.

The number of potential experimental crosses in cacti is mind boggling!
