Brad,

I threw a few avocado seeds into a pot of soil.  A couple seeds actually germinated.  I'm planning to use them as rootstock.  In the future when these seedling rootstock are big enough, if you have Lamb or Jan Boyce scion, I like to buy them from you.  Can you help me with the grafting?  I can bring the rootstock plants to your nursery for the grafting.

Sure next spring we can do that.

Avocado seeds are really easy to sprout, anyone can get them going and make their own trees.  My advice is start them in 5 gal pots with cactus mix or potting mix with extra pumice, sand, and perlite.  Then graft in late spring.  You can put the seed just barely covered in soil and keep wetted for a month or so and they will usually be sprouted.  For people in southern CA that have acess to reed seeds from farmers markets, those make good rootstocks.

The seed from the reed you sent me is probably just shy of two ft tall. They grow well even up here so far. Do you think it would be a good rootstalk for me or should I try and get something more cold hardy?

Grow as many seeds/trees as you can and test it out.  Seeds are cheap.  The rest is just theoretical until you try it.

Im growing a few reed seedlings and letting them go and not grafting.  It should only take a few years if they keep up the pace.  It looks like mine will also be very large after 1 summer.
