Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: ultimate mango smoothie
« on: December 09, 2013, 06:38:46 PM »
Haven't tried any smoothies yet but your fantasy mango smoothie does sound delicious.

I have made ice cream using a combination of Kent and Carrie mangoes with some fresh grated coconut. Yum.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Discount Equipment
« on: December 08, 2013, 10:23:17 AM »
Thank you! Appreciate your efforts to save us some money.

While preparing my dream list of equipment and hearing from all of you as to what should be added to the list and what you all loved to use, it dawned on me that we have a pretty decent sized group here who all purchase this equipment. Then i thought, if I owned a company and had 1,000+ people in my target demographic that I could reach simply by offering a discount (even if it is only 5%), I would do it in a heartbeat.  Consequently, I reached out to a few companies that make some of the items we love, asking to see if they would offer a discount to forum members.  I sent the emails out only an hour ago and have already heard back from Barnel who is willing to offer forum members "wholesale pricing which is significantly below ON LINE pricing" through one of their online distributors (http://www.pnetools.com) .  I am trying to work out the details as to how we would have the discount applied (online code, phone order mentioning the forum, etc) and will let you guys know as soon as I have the details hammered out.

Still waiting to hear from Felco and Vaca shears.  I have a pretty good form letter locked and loaded so if you guys want me to reach out to any other companies, just let me know.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Trip to Pine Island
« on: November 18, 2013, 07:30:40 PM »
I made a quick run down to Pine Island today and visited the Treehouse Nursery. I was blown away seeing
so many gorgeous tropical fruit trees. I was looking for a 7 Gal Biew Kiew and they must have had at least 40.
Next to them were 50 - 1007 Gal Lychees. Mago trees were everywhere and I can't wait to get back down to
check them out.

I understood that two (2) nurseries located in Bokeelia/Pine Island next to Cape Coral, Florida, sells them.
I must add that one nursery is called Fruitscapes, and the other is called Treehouse Nursery.

If you haven't been there, you should definitely lan a trip. Thanks for the heads-up Berto.

I checked with PI and they won't have any available until probably some time next year. I have heard good things
about both nurseries and have made 2 very satisfactory purchases from TT. I'm looking forward to trying PI in the future.

Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Clearing Up the Confusion

Earlier I posted that TT has one 3 Gal  Biew Kiew longan left. Apparently, admin thought I was trying to
make a sale as my post was deleted.

Please know that I don't work for or have any affiliation with TT. I am a social worker in St. Petersburg, Florida and
had been looking to buy a  Biew Kiew. I just happened to see that they had 2 for sale. I purchased one and thought
I would share my find if anyone else was looking.

My apologies if my post appeared to be sales related.

Michael

I would agree that it does not look like a Kent. All of my Kents are a darker green with red (not orange) coloring at the top.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Pomegranate Growers?
« on: November 01, 2013, 07:22:33 PM »
Pomegranates in Florida is a different animal due to the humidity and rain causing early splitting and the pest issues on the fruit. If I was growing in Florida, I would make sure the tree has a more open canopy and is away from other trees to allow good air flow. You want to get advice on good Florida selections to grow, some are better for the humid wet climate then others.

True. Everything I read states that California's dryer climate is more conducive to growing pomegranates. Green Sea Farms Nursery is here in Florida, so hopefully
I'll have some luck growing mine.

One interesting tidbit I received from Cindy at GSF is that "Fruit grows on second year wood. So, don't prune the whole tree every year."

Any Pomegranate tree growers here?

I just purchased a small Sirenevyi from Green Sea Farms and it arrived today, just
as it was getting dark. From what I could see, it looks very healthy as it only took
one day to get here.

I plan to keep it pruned to have a tree rather than bush shape and would appreciate any
tips regarding fertilizer, etc.

Thanks!

never grown any pomegranates myself, but my grandparents in india ha a massive thirty foot tall tree that produced tons a year. Note past tense. The next door neighbor installed air conditioning and set it up so the hot air blew right onto the tree. The tree died.

I've been wanting to grow pomegranates here, though. Is the cost of pomegranate trees from them reasonable? they seem to have a good selection.

It's a small 1 gal. plant and the cost was $15 + shipping. Cindy was most helpful and they do have quite a variety.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Anyone growing muscadine?
« on: October 21, 2013, 09:33:27 PM »
I'm using two 4'x4'x8' on each end with one 4'x4'x8' in the middle with 1'x4' pieces nailed on top
in an H pattern. The Carlos was planted in 1998 and is a good producer. I did cut it back quite a
bit in March and yield wasn't quite a much this season.

As previously mentioned, the Higgins isn't a self pollinator, but I have had a few grapes a couple
of seasons that were larger than the Carlos but smaller than normal large Higgins size.

my muscadine 'Carlos' finally flowered and fruited but only put out a few...I'll give it one more year and see how they do...How much should be trimmed back every year? any special fertilizer/watering schedule with these guys?

I cut all of the small branches growing off the main branches to about 2" during
the winter. I use citrus fertilizer now, but previously used pecan tree fertilizer when
I was able to find it at one of the local nurseries. I never water it. In fact, I think it
got too much water from this wet Summer.

Very nice selection. That Lemon Zest is impressive. What's your fertilizing secret?

I have a Carlos at one end of the arbor and a Higgins at the other end. The Carlos produces every year but
this year not quite as many. I cut it back during the Winter and suspect that's why there weren't as many grapes.
Also, quite a few of them have remained green and hard.

The Higgins isn't a self pollinator but a couple of times it produced grapes that were larger than Carlos but smaller
than the typical Higgins.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Curling Lychee Leaves
« on: October 12, 2013, 07:04:25 PM »
Thanks Harry

It's a Sweetheart, and is in a pot. I also noted a tomato plant was wilted so I added water to both.
I checked back a few hours later and most of  leaves had uncurled.

My Lychee tree has some new leaves that are curling. Could this be too much or too little water or something else?

Thanks!

"I know this is an older post but I wanted to say if you have not yet IDed this species, several wild diospyros are listed as poisonous. Including true D ebenaster. I have been trying to grow several members from this family and just found out that a species I have been trying to cultivate known as blueberry bush, D Glauca I believe is also listed as poisonous. Such a shame with such a cool name, I have 8 trees and don't know what to do with them"

Send them to me for my squirrels    :D

When you receive a 3, 5 or 7 gallon mango and leave it in a container of potting soil, at what point do you begin adding fertilizer? I have a LZ and MC that won't be planted until next year and want to insure that I don't under or over fertilize until than.

Thanks!
