My Marumi kumquat tastes so good.
« on: April 28, 2018, 03:03:41 AM »
My Marumi kumquat is fruiting now and the fruits taste so good. The fruits are juicy and the larger fruits measure up to 35 mm. Most are seedless.  I am not a fan of store bought Nagami kumquats and my expectations have been rather low. How good it tastes is all the more surprising. The plant bears around 30 fruits. Many are still unripe. The plant was inside a cold house during winter and there was not much growth and fruit development, from November until February. Now, it bears flowers and fruits in all stages, at the same time. I need more of these fruits.

That's a really nice looking tree.  I've had some really excellent Marumi crops, too.   If you like these try Fukushu/Changshou kumquat and Meiwa kumquat.   Both are sweeter than Nagami.  Fukushu is my favorite citrus.

Now, that I have tasted all of my kumquats, I can give my assumption of the taste. Meiwa and Changshou are very good fruits. Centennial Variegated still is a good fruit. However, it is missing some of the flavor, which makes kumquats so special. I also like Nagami, but my favorite kumquat still is Marumi. This is, may be, because I had most of the Marumi in summer and the other fruits during the winter months. More sun results in better fruits. I only had a few fruits and no direct comparison, eating them one at a time.  Therefore, I may change my evaluation in the future.

Centennial Variegated and Meiwa

Glad to hear!

I am going to ditch my Indio, nippon, limequat, and centennial.  Keeping the red lime, Fukushus, Nagamis, meiwa, and Marumi.  And keeping a sunquat in container

I’d love to see some new kumquat varieties in the US.

I also had a sunquat, centennial, and Nagami and eventually tossed them out into the compost pile, mainly because I did not care for their taste.

Does the Marumi ripen at a different time of year than the others?

For me, Marumi is a spring, summer and autumn fruit. Last year, the tree flowered all summer long, and went dormant from November until March. Only a couple of fruits ripened during winter.

This year's main crop is in September. I didn't have fruits in June and July and only a few in August. The fruits, which ripened in April and May were alright. However, these overwintered fruits were not as good as the last summer fruits.
Now, the Marumi kumquat are juicy and taste excellent again. For high quality fruits, regular fertilization and plenty of sun and water is essential.

What rootstock is your Marumi on.  I was looking for a Marumi on Poncirus trifoliata or  a seedling tree. I have 4 seedling Meiwa trees and a grafted Meiwa.  The grafted Meiwa is on kuharske citrange.  They are not compatible and tree just survives.

Poncirsguy,

your Meiwa seedling trees look great. I am envious. My kumquat seedlings grow much slower.  My Marumi is grafted on Poncirus trifoliata.

Those are impressive thorns for a kumquat.  Mine are all grafted so maybe thorns are the norm for seedlings and I just didn't experience it.  Only my nippon orangequat has thorns of any significance.

It was grafted by Eugen Schleipfer.

I have a Meiwa grafted on Flying Dragon.  It has been growing on the FD stock for about 5 years now.  The rootstock does show a little benching, as always happens with FD.   I also have a 20 year old inground Cara Cara grafted on Flying dragon, the benching extends out 1.5 inches wider all the way around than the Cara Cara trunk.
