My Rosigold and Sweet Tart mango trees set lots of fruit, and seem to hold on to it.
Actually, the same goes for my Alano sapodilla.

Has anyone tried thinning the young fruit, to achieve larger fruit size?
Were you happy with your results?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Harvesting season for PPK ?
« on: September 14, 2014, 11:53:56 AM »
I've forgotten how to access the mango cultivar database, so I'll ask our esteemed members.

In Florida does PPK fruit in June?
Pretty much all of my most delicious mangoes were in July and August this year.
So I'm wondering if PPK would be a good, relatively early choice.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is the 40-14 mango the Pina Colada?
« on: July 11, 2014, 06:47:38 PM »
I bought a mango from Zill's labeled 40-14.  It was smallish, yellow, not pretty.    Had Lots of flavor, though. Very sweet and enough tart to make it a very tasty mango.

A Google search suggested this might be the Pina Colada mango; maybe 40-14 is a convenient abbreviation?

I did not detect any coconut flavor, but the mango was still kind of firm, not at all mushy.

The fruit and spice park is calling people who registered for mango mania.

They want to be sure of who's attending, due to a long waiting list.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / life is good
« on: June 24, 2014, 10:03:18 AM »
I've been enjoying some mangos from fine forum friends for a couple weeks. But yesterday was the first multiple mango haul from my yard.

I'm going to give the prettier Dot to my trainer at the gym. Maybe she'll stop making me do so many exercises.

Joellen, on the other hand, is great to give to people you don't really like very much.

The Coconut Cream fell off due to some overly enthusiastic mowing of weeds under the tree.
It doesn't look very yellow, but it won't hurt to give it a chance.

The Jacquelin dropped. That tree produced very poorly this year.

I bought two of Bender's Galaxy mango trees recently.

I'd be happy to sell one of them for what I paid,  $35.00.

Or I would trade it for a healthy Maha Chanok tree, at least 8 feet tall, in a very large pot.   :)

PM me if interested.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Optimal care for young jackfruit trees
« on: April 30, 2014, 09:15:13 PM »
My grafted jackfruit trees tend to look their best the day I bring them home from the nursery.  Whether I plant them immediately or wait a bit the trees soon have some yellow leaves.  Within a year they generally have lost at least half of the leaves they started with.

I am wondering if my problem is with how often to water young trees.  I tend to water potted trees every 3 days, but have started to do so nearly every day in recent weeks, due to very warm weather and no rain.

How often should young trees in the ground get water?   If a young jack has been in the ground for a year, should it be pretty much on its own as far as water?

Years ago I read that jackfruit trees are more tolerant of drought than of over-watering.  Maybe that only applies to mature trees?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / kanana jakfruit ?
« on: March 16, 2014, 08:39:07 AM »
Yesterday I saw a jack labeled Kanana 2.    (I'm not sure the 2 was part of the cultivar name, actually.)    All they knew was that it "might" have come from Australia.

Is this familiar to any esteemed members?    The original spelling could be different, I'm sure.

Thanks.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Juicy Peach mango cultivar -- any good?
« on: March 14, 2014, 11:03:59 PM »
I haven't found much in the way of a description of the Juicy Peach mango.

Has anyone had enough experience to describe its flavor, size, or ?

Is it a Zill variety?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / approach graft to strengthen existing cultivar?
« on: September 30, 2013, 10:02:01 AM »
I have a young mango tree in the ground that has never really spread out its roots.

I was thinking of planting a mango pit next to this tree and eventually doing an approach graft* so that the original cultivar would have the advantage of a better root system.

Any idea of how far from the original tree I should plant the pit?   I'm guessing 6 inches but don't know.

This cultivar gets rave reviews from astute members of the mango community.   One nursery in my area stocks this variety, but their plants (of this particular cultivar) don't look all that great.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / My Spirit is gone
« on: August 07, 2013, 11:34:00 AM »
My baby Spirit of '76 tree brought one fruit to maturity. I studied it every couple days. Monday I kind of thought it had reached mature size, though it didn't have a blush on the skin. This morning as I headed to my truck I looked over and didn't see it on the tree.  Then I saw it on the ground, and felt relieved.
But a closer inspection revealed that some critter had done a remarkable job of eating all of the flesh, leaving a hollow shell and the pit.   :'(

So, if Joe or other connoisseurs get a chance to taste and describe, I'll forward to finding out what I missed.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mango redundancy ?
« on: July 12, 2013, 07:40:53 PM »
Due to a change in plans it looks my partner and I won't be buying a retirement place away from our present home.

That leaves me with more mango cultivars than I have room for, and I'm wondering if some of Gary Zill's selections are enough alike that one doesn't need them all.     Kind of like, one would not necessarly need Keitt, Kent, and Beverly -- two of the three might be plenty for the collector with limited space.

So, among Harvest Moon, Sweet Tart, Lemon Zest, Coconut Cream, and Peach Cobbler / O-2,   would some be enough alike that I would not need them all?   Other trees already in the ground include Dot, Spirit of '76, PPK, Dupuis, Maha, and Angie.

My trees came without the original Zill labels, so I'm not aware of all of the characteristics of each tree.

I have 3 small mango trees, all in ground, that I need to get rid of.

Mallika,  Valencia Pride, and Pickering.

All should be pretty easy to dig up and transplant.

In return I would like one good mango for each tree.  Or a commitment for same.

Warning:  my yard has Sri Lankan weevils.  If you don't have them in your yard, you don't want them.

Please PM me.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Harvest Moon mango ?
« on: June 16, 2013, 08:32:13 AM »
There were some nice mango trees for sale at the Fruit and Spice park yesterday.

Pepe had some Harvest Moon trees, and I got to read the Zill tag.  It said that HM mangos have some disease resistance. Apparently they are also a large mango.    :)

Has anyone had a Harvest Moon in the ground long enough to form any opinions on disease resistance, vigor of tree, and so forth?

I've read some good comments on flavor so far.

When my Joellen tree goes away I'll be looking for a nice mango to replace it.

I'm curious which mangos have tasted the best (or the worst) for mangophiles so far this season.

I've had some fine ones this year, mostly through forum members and local vendors of good repute.
Also, some blah ones, including an Edgar that was kind of blah compared to the sparkling Pineapple Pleasure I ate at the same sitting. Accidentally gave away all of the PPKs I bought, so I can't comment on them so far.

Had some great Edwards, and some nasty Duncans.

Although my Dot tree produced poorly this year, the best mango I've had this season was a grungy little Dot fresh from the tree.  It didn't look great, but happened to be at the peak of its flavor.   :D

Still hoping to taste for the first time LZ, Coco Cream, Angie, and Maha,  so I can revise my list.

The good, bad, and ugly.

Joellen, displaying her bounty of mediocre fruit. The tiny splash of red is a bud sport, with a red blossom.

Lemon Zest has flushed more new leaves than it had to start with -- very exciting.

Best crop ever for Magana.

My young jackfruit trees looked great just two weeks ago.   :'(

We found some sticks by the curb, and stuck them in a pot.   :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Does anthracnose matter on mature mangos?
« on: April 28, 2013, 09:31:58 AM »
I've been growing them a long enough time that I should know the answer to that question.

But I'm not actually sure.  I know anthracnose can affect fruit yield quite a bit.  But do anthracnose spots on a mature mango make a big difference as far as eating quality?  Or is it more cosmetic?

I remember a food writer calling anthracnose spots "sugar spots" and saying they mean the fruit is ripe.  That seems like an oversimplification at best.

Dr. Richard Campbell of Fairchild Garden will be discussing the pruning of  mango, lychee, longan et al. at the Palm Beach Rare Fruit Council meeting tonight at 7:30.

Dr. Campbell knows his stuff, and looks great in a bathtub full of mangos*  according to the cover of an old magazine I saw years ago.

* but then, who wouldn't?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Outlook not Rosie
« on: March 24, 2013, 09:23:34 PM »
My Rosigold lost about 80% of its fruit in the last few days  ???    I think the fruit was within a couple weeks of being mature enough to ripen. Very sad.  We've had some very gusty winds -- I wonder if that was enough to do it.

The tree is about ten feet tall, and quite mature, so I don't water it.  Now I'm second guessing myself.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Best substtute for Hayden mango
« on: March 03, 2013, 11:24:26 AM »
A friend of a friend has asked me for mango recommendations.  I've sold him on Pickering and Cogshall, as being compact and tasty, but he really wants a Hayden also. For the usual reasons, I guess.  It tasted good when he was a kid......

I want to convince him to try something other than Hayden, but it would have to have similar qualities.  My experience is limited, but I'm thinking of Baileys Marvel.   Any thoughts on that variety or other good substitutions?

Pictures now attached.   And did I mention that a free Lamancha buckling comes with each purchase?

One tree is less than two feet tall, in the ground (you dig), for $5.00.

The other is approximately 5 feet tall, in an air root pot, for $15.00.  I need the pot back.

Neither looks great, but both would come around with some care.

pm  me if interested.

If you don't already have weevils in your yard you may want to pass up this offer.

I would also consider trade for promise of delicious mangos this coming summer.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Thinning fruit -- mango
« on: February 02, 2013, 09:58:43 AM »
My Rosigold has suffered the last couple years because I didn't thin the fruit.  When is the best time to do that?  Maybe marble-sized?  Or golf-ball sized?

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Florida source for Keyplex 350 ?
« on: January 18, 2013, 11:51:30 AM »
For members in southern Florida who use Keyplex 350,  do you get it locally? Or order it online?  I'm hoping to find a fairly inexpensive source.   I didn't have much luck googling.
