What's ripening in Costa Rica right now?
« on: July 18, 2019, 03:53:52 PM »
I will be heading to Costa Rica the week after next for a little family surf trip.  We will be on the Pacific side probably starting in the Nosara region and working our way south.

Would love to sample some rare fruit along the way if possible.  Any suggestions on farms or can't miss type places?  By the way...what's ripening down there at the moment?

I was just there last week.  Rambutan is everywhere on the side of the road from Jaco South.  Pineapple of course.  Banana.  Some mango.  Rainy season seemed delayed into early July last week was dry and the locals said heavy rain in June but July was dry up to last week.   In the fruit stands I saw some mangosteen but was too expensive and I had access to free fruit so hard to buy.  But love mangosteen.

Today in the "ferria" (farmers' market) where I live, besides the usual piles of year-round fruits like pineapples, papayas, citrus, bananas, etc., I saw some nice sapotes Columbiano, japlums, nice selection of W. Indian type avocados (cheap!), still lots of mangoes, jocotes, mamon Chinos, guanabana. Next week there'll be others I'm sure. If you're going to Jaco you'll probably pass through Orotina which is the avocado and mango center of the country. Zill's Nursery in in that area.

It's fairly common to have a couple weeks of dry weather during July.  I have experienced it a few times in southern Costa.  I will be down in a few weeks to surf some out of the way spots in Guanacaste.

On the Caribbean we have durian, pulusan, Langsat, mangosteen, marang, champedek, cherapu, as well as the regular stuff.  For surfing we have Salsa Brava among other breaks.

From the San Jose airport you can fly to Limon airport.  We’re about 40 minutes from there.

Travel time on the road varies but 4.5 hours is a fair estimate.
The fruits are not expensive.  Most of these fruits cost about $1.50 lb.

My stand this morning at our farmers market. There’s a lot more fruit I didn’t take. All those boxes are full and the fruit sold well. In the afternoon some people drove more than 6 hours from the pacific coast to get durian and champedek. South Caribbean of Costa Rica is pumping!

That's very cool! Is that crate with langsat (next to mangosteen)?

Yeah, I sold out about 50lbs. The colloquial name for langsat here is ‘huevos de gato’ which is cat’s balls!

It’s been a great season.  Those are some fruits that I took to the market yesterday.  But there’s lots more.  Champedek, rollinia, sapodilla, Mamey, cas, araza, dwarf mulchi, wax Jambu, baccaurea dulcis, cherapu, lansium, kepel coming up again soon...
Thank You Ben Mango for the visit, it’s always nice to get a visit from someone from the forum that knows something about these fruits.  My son and I shared our last durian of the season with Ben.
