Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: TM Red Jack Fruit
« on: August 27, 2023, 10:17:56 PM »
I’ve been following this thread as I have a TMR tree that just fruited for the first time this year. Unfortunately, it’s at a rental home and I don’t go there often. I went today and saw that 1 of the 2 fruits were rotten, so I went ahead and picked the other, but it appears I picked the other one prematurely, so I don’t think it will be a good example. Nonetheless, here’s some pics.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Anyone growing Juliette mango?

I’ve only had one or two from TA but they were good enough for me to get a tree. Excellent growth habit; slow-growing, dense/ compact, upright.  Can’t comment on fruiting yet as mine is still too young.

I have Lorito too. It is said to bear at the same time as Pantin though. Do you know the season for Excalibur?

Yes, but I’ve heard from a knowledgeable source that Lorito is the superior fruit.

You could also add green Sapote (close enough to mamey) for more winter fruit.

If you're near downtown, there's a famous old oak tree down by the Riverwalk that is huge and worth seeing.

Citrus plants, in my experience, go to sleep for a bit when planted in ground. It's a combination of root shock, and awareness that they're no longer constrained and will focus on root growth instead of top growth.

The severity of the shock will determine how long it's asleep. If it's bad enough that you get leaf drop, you'd pretty much waiting until next season for anything to happen other than mild leaf growth.

Just be careful not to overfeed during this period, as it can actually make the issue worse.

Too much water can also stunt growth, though I'm not sure how much of an issue that would be with how sandy your soil appears to be.

My experience was similar. Although I didn’t plant in ground, I did up-pot significantly, from 15 to 35 gal. I did that in mid to late January and it didn’t recover till I wrote you in May, more than 3 months later. What’s done is done but next time I would give it a chance to recover. Hope your new one works out!

Anyone have their TM Red Jack Fruit Tree fruited yet? Excalibur was selling this few years ago. Mine is growing but no fruit yet. Mine have few male flowers. I am waiting to see the quality and color of the fruit.

Mine is holding its first small fruit this year.

I know it’s an older thread but some great info! Do you guys find that Jabos require organic fertilizer like Lychees do, or are they a little hardier and can take some of the harsher/stronger stuff?

I fertilize mine with regular 8-3-9 all the time with no problem but when I have it they do seem to love the Holly Tone.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Mango weed wacker damage
« on: May 10, 2023, 10:36:19 PM »
I’ve had weed eater damage before and it’s always horizontal so that vertical damage perpendicular to the trunk wouldn’t be indicative of weed eater to me, but it doesn’t look like animal damage either?

It looks like you have it mulched around the tree, would they have any reason to be seed eating next to the trunk?

Replanting completed. I got a couple of big bags of mushroom/worm castings compost which is really nice and rich looking, and dug out the entire hole about 3' wide removing all of the old soil, coffee grounds and pine bark. dug a "borrow pit" in the yard and mixed everything together. I think this is going to be a game changer. I'll know in a couple of week.

Please update us on how this turns out. For me, citrus have done better in sandy mixes than compost, though I am growing in containers. When I last transplanted mine, going from 15 to 35 gallons, I noticed that the Sugar Belle had similar symptoms to yours. It eventually got going with nice new growth but it was notably slower to rebound from the transplant shock than the others (I also root prune).

This was actually a cutting but I don’t know if the original seller grew it from seed. The leaves do look like GG but we’ll see.

You probably got a hybrid or variation, but hard to say. Looks a lot like the flowers on the giant granadilla we grew a while back, don't think it was red either.

Thanks. I was kind of worried if may be that; after looking at the followers again, they do look different in other ways. If that’s the case, I’ll find out soon.

I have a Giant Granadilla that is flowering but the petals don’t have that purple/ pinkish color that you see here: https://www.australianseed.com/shop/item/passionfruit-giant-granadilla
Any ideas why?

I may be the proponent of netting that skhan was referencing. I grow my citrus in containers under a protective netting. For sure it’s not aesthetically pleasing, but if you can get over that, citrus is not that hard in S. Florida. The one thing I have noticed with the netting is that the trees are more prone to fungal issues as the netting gets wet and retains moisture and restricts airflow. Here’s a pic of my Excalibur red lime with some fruit.

I have a Tango and a Sugar Belle in the ground covered in netting which will remain for 2-3 years, when hopefully the trees will be large and healthy enough to sustain the inevitable HLB psyllid damage and produce some healthy fruit.

Good luck!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Orange sherbet mango first blooming

Interesting, I’ve heard they can be pretty precocious for some growers in south Florida…I wonder who has had good productivity luck with young OS trees (assuming not many growers have OS trees over 5 years old)

I have a 5 year old + OS that’s given me one mango so far. Hoping for a good year this year.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Fruit trees I gave up on
« on: January 10, 2023, 11:13:04 PM »
FruitGrower and Flgarden, what problems did you have with the trees, e.g., growth habit, disease, etc.? Thanks!

P.S. if my coffee plants go, I'll add that to the list of trees I gave up on . . .

The older one has constant limb dieback, symptoms of micronutrient deficiencies despite regular foliar and drench applications, and has hardly grown in 5+ yrs. The younger one grew a little better but the limbs always grew downward. I would trim those in an effort to get more upward growth and they’d do the same, after so many prunings on a small tree, it began to show similar symptoms to the other one, though not as bad. I cut both back recently and went crazy with the minors in hopes of seeing something that will make me keep them but I’m not holding out hope. We’ll see.
