Looming Cat 2. Now 79 miles from eye predicted for Thursday 7 am. We’ve seen worse but it will get breezy.

@TropicalTidbits
Hurricane #Humberto continues to get stronger as it moves ENE out into the northwestern Atlantic. Its track may take it very close to Bermuda late Wednesday. Any shift southward in the track could bring hurricane conditions to the island.

Risk of Cat 3 now. At least a strong Cat 2, 80 miles from eye. Direction brings the extra strong easterly wall. Preparations made.  Calm and beautiful today. Tomorrow won’t be so calm...

Man, that sucks! Hopefully your family, friends and orchard will be spared. Tell your family members to stay safe out there.

Thanks for the notes Simon, Alex.We are staring down a Cat 3. Good news: it’s moving fast so we will only have a 12 hour window at Tropical Force and perhaps a few hours at Hurricane Force.  8pm tonight will be the peak. My seedlings are indoors now, in bathtubs, showers,l and on kitchen floor.  For those who aren’t aware, Bermuda infrastructure is generally solid, all concrete most steel reinforced.  This Cat 3 has a small diameter so 70 miles out still offers us respite. I don’t expect too much structural damage but will certainly lose some crops.  We’ll be fine here.

Watching right behind it we have another storm brewing...

I truly hope you don’t take a direct hit.  Keep us informed.

For perspective, the Atlantic Ocean covers 41 million square miles. Bermuda covers only 21 square. So when the eye wall grazes on end of the island, as doing now, it’s pretty rare. I’ve experienced 3 eyes in my lifetime, one a Cat 3. I’m at the other end of the island so we’ll see what comes of this. Howling pretty good out there now....gusts up to 82 mph

Peak winds will hit in the next hour.

Woah - that definitely looks like you are about to get hit by the eye wall.  Please be safe.

Good morning forum.

Storm has passed.  Peak winds over land 115mph.

80% without electricity (essentially almost everyone not in the city).  Structural assessments begin in a few moments.  Not life lost. One baby born. Road clearing will take some time.  And just for fun, a reboot of the unprecedented double hurricane strike in the same week from several years ago may be in the works...

Trees everywhere are whipped. Funny thing is I have two fresh grafts that look ok still. Time will tell.

Hurricane eye went from 30 miles wide to 105.  That’s why we got hit harder than expected.

How did your trees do ?

How did your trees do ?

What’s up Doc? Leaves are toast. But no branches broken. Two grafts I had going survived. A friend you might recall from years ago, Dr. Warner, asked me to bag his 5ft tall mango trees as he travelled today and we have a direct hit projected for Tuesday. When I went to meet I saw first hand how magical bagging is. He has a VP totally exposed at a hilltop he put a trash bag on and leaves are unblemished. Counterintuitive but battle tested at 115mph.  Will be doing that going forward except my leaves are already toast...checked my field and as expected every single banana tree leveled.  Black Sapote yawned and stands high.

I’m thinking ex-banana, most trees should live. Thanks for asking.

Glad to hear your trees should recover.   As long as they are not uprooted, they should make it.

Bagging is an interesting idea.  I definitely see how it can save the leaves, but it does seem that the bag would act as a “sail” of sorts and increase the chance of uprooting.  I’m curious to hear how that works going forward.

Hoping Jerry misses

I’m sure someone here already posted about the counterintuitive bagging - need to find it. Another source tells me they’ve use it with success too. Seeing it work sold me.

Jerry projected weaker but it seems we sit in a hurricane bowling alley with Karen now behind Jerry.
