My favorite was Z4, very sweet and juiciy. I think it's even sweeter than Sabara. Another very good one, not in photo, was Ponhema. Also very sweet and juicy. The Escarlate was second favorite, very similar to red hybrid jaboticaba. Ofoourse havind different types of jaboticabas extends the season also.

Great stuff Oscar and it is good to hear that z4 has quality fruit.I have a couple of seedlings. I think escarlate is a fair bit sweeter than sabara and red hybrid is on par in the sweetness stakes.I am very lucky to have had all 5 of those even though I gave away all the oblongatas.

Interesting. Ponhema is reported to be sour until very ripe, a heavy producer and a vigorous grower. I have some small plants going from seeds I ordered from you. I am really excited to try these now. I also read a research paper summary where they were using Ponhema as a rootstock.

Oscar may I ask how long Z4 and Escarlate will fruit from seeds? I have very small seedlings of both just starting to germinate. I hope it will just be around 5-6 years.

Anybody had Black Velvet jaboticaba? That seems to be the latest and the greatest in Brazil.

Thanks for the link. Yes got it from Adhemar, the person doing that blog. Z4 is a hybrid developed by a Brazilian university. It is very sweet and juicy more so than the red hybrid or even Sabara. Very good quality!

It's not any more mysterious than the other hybrids, red and escarlate. What plants were crossed to produce them? Nobody seems to know for sure, there are only guesses.

Oscar,
Thanks for the report. Is there a source for the z4 seeds in the US?

I have heard that Phitrantha costada fruits in about 2  1/2 years and is a smaller tree than red hybrid or escarlate

I have some costada seedlings the I got from Luc. They are about a year old, so still a bit of a wait, but I'd be excited if they fruited that quickly. I have a tree labeled as white phitrantha that is flowering in a 10 gallon pot and is probably 4-5 years old. Still waiting on a fruit set.
