SoCal Road Trip visit to Leo Manuel - Mango and Dragon Fruit.
« on: October 29, 2014, 02:33:08 PM »
I and two other CRFG members decided to visit Leo Manuel.

We were interested in seeing his garden and Dragon Fruit and other cacti with good tasting fruit he is growing.

We were also interested in his Mango trees.

Thanks, Ric!  Can't believe he's still got so many mangoes left.  My stockpile's
been gone now for at least a month, though I did pick all the Keitt, which could
have stayed on the trees for another couple months. I wanted to make sure they
got at least 1-2 flushes before winter dormancy set in....

We also decided to visit Epicacti Nursery, MattsLandscape.com's walk-in nursery located in North San Diego County.

Ric,

Excellent videos, how did you like the harrisia pomanensis fruit? Looks like I might have to stop to Mattslandscaping one of these days. I saw he had some nice Burbank Spineless, though it seems he has less varieties of Opuntia sp.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

The Harrisia pomanensis fruit was nothing to write home about. It was okay, if it was riper, it might have tasted as good as a better Peruvian Apple cactus fruit.

Matt does not have much Opuntia, he basically has at the nursery what is listed on his MattsLandscape.com web site.

Did I ever send you Torrance PCH#1 pad? If not you still looking to acquire it?

Not great!!

Some are interested in what flavor an Epi could contribute to future DF hybrids.

Up until 3 weeks ago I lived a few miles west of Leo. He has quite an amazing collection. His lychees are delicious, he gets a huge crop of Suriname cherries, and last year when I was there he had 2 mangoes hanging on a tree that were the size of a football!

He is a great guy, always willing to visit and share knowledge and fruit.

Glad you had a good trip!
