Jambolan "Java" Plum (Syzygium cumini) - Which one?
« on: April 05, 2015, 02:30:28 AM »
Ok, so some of my Indian friends have discovered my fruit orchard and insist I grow for them the "Raz Jamun," a.k.a. the Sweet Jambolan.

I honestly know nothing about this fruit and never even tried one.

They explained to me that there are astringent varieties and sweet ones.

The one they want me to grow is larger and sweet.  Appears black/purple with a dimple.

First of all, I want to know which one is the best variety.  Then if someone knows, the tolerances, pollination requirements, hardiness and most importantly, where to find one?

I understand their roots can be destructive, so I plan to grow it where they can't be.  Are they able to be kept smaller with vigorous pruning without reducing crops?

Thanks for the advice!

I'm growing 3 trees, which do fine in my subtropical climate (similar to SoCals, I think). The fruit quality is different on each tree, despite the seeds come all from one tree. I had a forth tree, which I did cut down because the production and quality was very bad. Good jambus are very tasty and suppossed to be very healthy.
I have no idea about cultivars, but maybe your indian friends can help you out, maybe the can get seeds of good fruit from India...

Pruning seems no problem on the trees. I should not be a problem controlling the size...

I have these growing well but not fruiting yet. Tough trees.  River's End Nursery in Texas has them

A nice video I found  https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TGlLoU4Pxk8

Well, did some research on my own and found the following:

There are 2 primary types.
* Badlapur Jambul (Suva-Jamun)
- Large, oval, sweet

* Kala Dona (Kutta-Jamun)
- small, round, astringent

Out of these are common varieties:

Sweet
* Ra-Jamun
* Badama

Acidic
* Kaatha

Seasonal Ripeners
* Jathi
* Ashada
* Bhado

Improved
* Narendra Jamun 6
* Rajendra Jamun 1
* Goma Priyanka
* CISH J-42 Seedless
* CISH J-37
* Konkan Bahadoli "Skeels"

Out of the varieties available, the two most desired are the Ra-Jamun and the Konkan Bahadoli.

The KB is also polyembryonically grown and the seed will stay true to the mother plant.

Now the question is, where can I find these two types in the USA?  Is it possible to bring them here from India/Thane/Vengurla?

Is it possible for these to be sent from India to the US in either plant/scion/seed form?

Is it possible to ship plants, or are we restricted to only seeds?

Also, can you obtain for me the varieties Ra-Jamun and Konkan Bahadoli?

I'm pretty sure you can't ship plants in to the US. Someone else can clarify more on this.

There is this jambolan tree where I live that's about 40 feet tall. It gives out the best jamoblan I have ever seen or eaten. What we get in the market are much smaller with less flesh.

That been said I got no clue about the variety. Still if you want the seeds I can send it to you once the fruits are ripe which may take a few months as the tree has just begun flowering.

I would love this.

You know if that one makes polyembryonic seeds?

I know one way we can find out.  :D

Let me know when the season has arrived.  I'm on a mission to get my Indian friends just what they want.  I can at least be growing a seedling from you until I can find the other varieties that I'm after.

I'm going to try and reach out to the creators of these varieties from their respective institutes--but that process could take quite some time.

I'll take this journey with the TFF, because I do not see where anyone in the US is growing the improved Jamun varieties.

I would say just buy whatever you can that is available around (or online).  Here in CA you cannot bring (in) plants from out of state or even bring (in) fruits from out of state.  First check with your local and state laws on bringing plant to your home state, then check with Federal law.

Here's a picture of my Jambolan "Java" Plum (Syzygium cumini) with Unripe fruits.

This image show the size of the Unripe fruit

These are my Jambolan "Java" Plum (Syzygium cumini).  I have 3 of them. That one of the many favorite tropical fruit

Mine that fruited were similar looking. I understand on budwood sharing. there is a large community within CA that is growing it locally. that is where I intend on sharing. its perfectly legal.

A friend planted some seeds in pots and gave me one. She said the seeds came from the Philippines. She was eating them at the airport and placed some seeds in her handcarry. She also had mangosteen and lansium/lanzones.

Here is the lansium she gave me.

Beautiful growth. These from seed can take 5-7 years before fruiting.

If your Indian friends want you to grow those fruits for them in your farm then can they not arrange for the seeds/plants from India?
Those fruits are in season between May - June: so if any of your friends are visiting India during that period then they can bring you some fruits/seeds.
