yes I have Myrciaria coronata var. Restinga, but only a few left in one gal pots...about 7-8inch tall, cost $25 ea.

This one is quite rare still in USA...my largest plants that I'm keeping for myself are still only a couple feet tall.

sorry I haven't been posting updates on this thread...I will start updating it again soon!

Will you have grafted CORG this year?  Looking for Ben's BEaut and Queen Hayri.

The special cherry of rio tree I named queen Hayri, got a bad fungal disease on the trunk and I gave it to my friend to rehab...but I just saw the tree again and now it's completely girdled, with cambium is totally dead all the way around the trunk near the graft union....but the tree is still looking good!  Maybe it will eventually heal up?  I'm surprised it's not struggling now?  I thought it needed cambium intact to keep green leaves? But I Guess not

Bens beaut was planted in ground, still haven't got a good crop yet, but maybe this season.  I will make more after it fruits most likely

Not sure if I can make more of the queen Hayri ...I may need to go visit the tree!

Good day, dear forum members,

I'm curious what the group thinks of my idea.....I'm considering trying something new this year...

I might start offering grafted plants before they're healed....

although they're not guaranteed to take, there is a very high chance they will take....

I'm thinking if they for some reason do not take, I can ship out replacement scions for free, so you can try to graft again...(I would also be strategic with the grafts that I employ, so that I wouldn't compromise the rootstock, leaving enough trunk left for second attempts at grafting.)

here are some advantages to purchasing a grafted tree before it heals:
1) you don't have to wait as long!

2) the price is significantly reduced because I don't have to keep the tree in my custody while it's healing

3) I can quickly fill custom orders in some cases (like cocktail trees, or trees with special rootstocks)

4) with high demand items you will be able to essentially cut in front of the line....getting items before I offer them to the public.

and some obvious disadvantages:

1) the graft may not take!  Usually I have very high success 80% or more, but sometimes there is always the inevitable failure!

2) you must keep the tree happy while it heals from grafting...this means treating the plant like usual, nothing fancy....in most cases the biggest problems are either lack of warmth and humidity (in cold regions), or lack of moisture and intense heat (in hot or dry regions).

3) when the tree is healed...you must remove grafting tape by yourself...it's not difficult, but you must do this so the tree isn't girdled by the grafting tape...you can leave the tape on the scion to biodegrade, but not around the graft union.   The tape around the graft union is wound up so tight that it doesn't degrade as quickly.

4) you must have some interest in grafting...if not, you might end up with a tree that's just a rootstock!  I can send free replacement scions, but if you're not willing to graft, they are useless!

This whole deal I'm thinking of is just in the works....it's not for everyone (especially if you don't want to try grafting), and not for every plant (some plants just can't handle that type of abuse, being grafted and shipped partially bare root without healing).

At first I will probably offer some of the Myrciarias, Eugenias, Annonas, and Loquats....I won't have many pouterias or garcinias now, but maybe later in the year.

I'm interested to hear some of your thoughts on this idea.

Although there are some risks involved, I think in some cases it might work out very well.

thanks in advance for your feedback!
(I'm going to decide whether or not to offer this deal, based on the responses I get)

Think that while a good idea shipping non-fully healed grafts is a big risk to you. Especially this time of year with winter still going in most parts of the country. My 2 cents! Hope all is well bro.

I think another problem would be the graft union getting pushed off during the shipping. I have seen some beat up boxes due to the shipping process.
Grow mainly fruits, vegetables, and herbs.

I'm not going to wait for strike three!

I don't think I will offer this service to the public, but in certain cases I can offer this deal!

for instance, right now I have a customer who really must have a grafted camu camu...so I will graft one onto M. vexator and mail it now (sent without healing the plant cost $15, which cost half the price of a healed plant for $30)....if it doesn't take, I will send a few scions for him to have a second chance!  if that fails, then maybe we can try again?

(I might also try selling the trees in pairs, because you'll have a better chance of one taking, and you might even get two trees for the price of one)...I'm always thinking of ways to sell plants for cheaper, and faster...maybe this idea can be helpful?

I will let you know how this works out!

I know it can be done easily for loquats, and jaboticabas!

I think it would be ok if you clearly spell out who takes responsibility if the graft doesn't take, you or the customer? Would be best for people that have some experience of taking care of young grafts to help them heal, not for general public. Also would be best for pick up at the nursery, as in shipping they could get damaged. Unless ofcourse you package them extra carefully as in padded in foam inside a Samsonite suitcase.  ;)

Hi Adam,

I guess your idea may not be good for international trades, at least for me  >:(.   Nonetheless, I have some queries after watching your video on grafting, hopefully you can enlighten me with some tips. First, you seem to wrap up the scion completely, including over the buds, is it true? Then, the buds would push through the tape, or your buddy tape?  Second, can I do a Clive graft with some leaves cut half?  Third, what is the common ways to dwaft a fruit tree?

(Will write to you later for order.)

Thanks.

Tuckee

great advise as usual Oscar, thank you.

I've sent some grafted unhealed plants yesterday (after giving a big disclaimer to my customer...lol)....let's see how things turn out!

maybe the first pair of M dubias grafted onto M. vexator sent in the mail in the history of the universe... :P

I will pray they are the first to survive as well! :-\

The unhealed grafted plants arrived in perfect condition for my customer...now let's see if the grafts take.

Ive coached my customer through the process of caring for the unhealed plant....so I'm confident that we have a good chance for succes.

Will post an update soon (maybe 20-30 days)...if the grafts start pushing that will be a great sign.

Any idea how long grafted camu camu would take to fruit?  You have me intrigued...plus, it's a good way to use vexator for something good  ;)

Jeff if I had to guess I'd say it would take 2-3 yrs, that's if your scion was from mature wood...mine are not, so it may take closer to 3-5 yrs....

Also, I haven't even tested the long term compatability for m vexator as rootstock...it could have a dwarfing effect....or could be incompatible over the long run....but so far I'm convinced they are a decent match...my small grafted tree is growing slowly, but very healthy...which is normal for most of my tiny grafted myrciarias...

update!

I still have scions available for most of the varieties I posted.

BUT I'M RUNNING OUT OF BUDDY TAPE, AND IT IS TOO MUCH LABOR TO WRAP ALL THE SCIONS!

PLEASE NOTE THAT FOR FUTURE ORDERS, THE SCIONS WILL COME IN PLASTIC BAGS WITH VERMICULITE (THIS IS JUST AS GOOD, IF NOT BETTER THAN BUDDY TAPE IN MY OPINION)...IT WILL BE MUCH EASIER FOR ME TO KEEP UP WITH ORDERS THIS WAY.....WRAPPING THEM WITH BUDDY TAPE IS A HASSLE!

SORRY FOR THE INCONVENIENCE.

THANKS!
