You can't be talking about Bennett at Mossman gorge Cultivator. There are lots that are good for sauces, flavorings, drinks etc.

There are numerous fig species that are edible but none come close to being as good as the cultivated fig.

BMc I have collected C.roxburghii but have not tried it.The fruits were a bit old and rotten.I passed the seeds onto someone who claimed they were goos to eat.Maybe they are ok.

Adam maybe I was a little swift to judge as some burdekin plums and cedar bay cherries deserve a modest amount of respect. This place does a little better with edible fish and crustaceans.Marron,Qld Red Claw and Macrobrachium rosenbergi are the best freshwater crustaceans and there are many second rate ones like Cherax destructor as well. There are some nice freshwater fish and kangaroos aren't bad to eat.

Recher is right that there is less potential than most people think.Randia fitzalani and S.leumannii are crap alright and there are no good Annononaceae. Some big fruiting tropical Syzigiums like suborbiculare and native mallacense are ok.There are many sour species but not sweet dessert fruits.Giant macadamia (grandis) is not edible but maybe som tubers and nuts have potential. I have eaten shiploads of bush tucker and there are only a few species that are worth further investigation.Atherton raspberry I suppose is alright as well as Manilkara kauki.

Recher they are not uncommonly grown around here where the white fleshed tampois more usually seen. Some folk consider them the best of the genus prefering them to even top rambais.

BMc I have tried a couple of Rajang and they are better than the standard also.I have been told Tweed Crisp is very nice in taste.Peter S was propagating Amber,Berry and Rajang when last I heard but I don't know about Bruno.I can check and keep you posted about Berry.

Galaxy! that trash is the dominant one at the nuseries now.It is not even a solar system...planet or asteroid.Maybe the latex enthusiasts and those who enjoy sloppy, bland fruit would get out of it.

I bet they are both brazilian because I have no idea.Could the first one be a theobroma. The second one with the spherical green fruit on stalks also has me beat.Gacinia brasiliensis,Callophyllum? The tree behind looks like a giant sapodilla.

Saff it looks kinda like a HG.I think they have a fair bit of latex and that one appears to have a bit.

davie I presume you are not asking me.If you did ask I would say it is close to the best of the common varieties in Australia and listed for Florida.I think a couple of Malaysians and perhaps one or two here are a step up in quality. There is a variety dubbed Berry (after the late fruit grower Ron Berry) that I am yet to try and tropical fuit growers are raving about it.I have lined a specimen up to check out the hype.

HG is a small dense variety and can be kept to 7ft tall with a simialr spread with pruning.

Honey gold is a good variety and I can compare it to other older common Australian types. The taste is very nice, the smell is quite sweet and strong, there is loads of pale yellow flesh but it is not that soft.It is more medium softeness.Gold nugget is more orange and sloppier but also has a good flavor.I reckon Honey Gold is better than Black Gold and much better than Cochin and miles ahead of Galaxy.

They are in thailand in small numbers and considered a poor quality jack due to sloppy flesh.

BMc yes but they are at the extreme in that character and are perhaps a slightly divergent jack from most.I am sure there is no chempa blood (sap).Seedlings of this type develop a strong papaya leaf pattern (as do many jacks) for a couple of years.

The amount of fuzz and hairs varies a bit between Chempa varieties but is always more or more sandpapery at least than jack seedlings. Some small fruiting jacks can have fruit less than 3lbs consistently and some larger fruiting chempas have fruit reaching 15 to 20lbs.
The softer skin of chempedak,,bulbs clinging to the core, browner seeds, different small and taste are other factors that help identify them. The skin of the 'twisted chempedak' looks jackfruit like at a glance. This one here looks 100% chempa to me.

I am shocked Steven :o.The usual way is through quarantine channels which are far more relaxed going from here to there than the other way around. There are varieties and even whole species (eg achacha) that are patented with plant breeder rights in a whole country like paxton prolific or calypso mango. They don't extend world wide unless they are released into a country under an agreement.
Maybe it is best to give import laws the respect they deserve.

7091
Citrus on flying dragon rootstock should be alright.

7092
mikesid if you're going to risk a swat team of storm troopers dragging you off it might be worth expanding the list.Stick your neck out for hillary's white and paxton prolific (kj pinks) as well.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: improving soil (heavy clay)
« on: January 08, 2013, 07:04:15 AM »
Gypsum will create more problems than it solves. You have to loosen the soil when it's moist and get air in.The main thing is to pile mulch on...vast amounts that keeps getting topped up.Never plant into a deep hole in the clay as it will turn into a well and be a window into the water table.Planting on mounds is the only way to go.

This is a rough guide but there are a million around for each species. It looks like a nitrogen deficiency.Deficiencies are most often created by applying an excess of an antagonistic nutrient.Theoretically if someone tried to create a deficiency of Fe,Mn and Mg the easiest way would be to apply gypsum excessively.Composite deficiencies and excess symptoms when combined are hard to pick.

The rain set the yellow grumichama off again and it is a festval of flower buds.

My small broad leafed papaya suddenly grew with the rain and I see flowers.

I know dishes with garlic, sator (parkia) and pdak together are best avoided and can raise the roof as well lead to porcelain spraypainting.

http://animagro.blogspot.com.au/2010/12/popular-jackfruit-clones-in-malaysia.html

They pretty well all originate from Malaysia but varieties have also been in surrounding areas for a long time.I have seen very similar ones here and can tell that must be a good one by its appearance being almost the same as ones I know. The ones in the link above might ring a few bells for chempa enthusiasts.

Come to think of it I once drank half a bottle of village 'rotgut' and tested the theory that alcohol and durian do not mix.I can also confirm that durian is way better sliding down your throat than coming back up.

In far eastern Thailand and Loas you are advised not to eat cha'oom with either squirrell or stinkbugs.

I suggest anyone contemplating eating giraffe, kudu or cape buffalo and having a drink made from russian potatoes, juniper berries or mexican agave should refrain.I was with a group who visited carnivores restaurant in Nairobi and we were all ill the next day.I swear I had a bad hunk of giraffe and a dozen drinks could not rinse the stringy meat down properly.
