Sapodilla that tastes like mamey
« on: March 05, 2013, 02:56:44 PM »
I was at Zill's a while back...and tasted a sapodilla that had a flavor of both mamey and sapodilla.

Does anyone know what type this may have been??  It was really nice.

I tasted a few mamey from Mexico in the past, that tasted similar to sapodilla. I`m currently growing one seedling from those fruits ;)

While Zill is at it maybe they can find a sapodilla that is the size of a mamey.  :)

Couldn't you just ask Zill's? ;)

that's a novel idea!
One of the employees was eating the fruit, and didn't know what cultivar it was (the fruit even had some red in the flesh, like mamey) Yes I suppose I could ask Zill, but was wondering if anyone else had tasted a sapodilla that was reminiscent of mamey..and if they knew the cultivar name.

I suppose this fruit I tasted was much more special (rare) than I realized.

but I saved the seeds!!

I don't know of any new sapodilla varieties they are "working on".  You mentioned the flesh had a redish coloration...Hasya has the most red in it with Morena having a light rosy hue at times (as does Excalibur).

How big was the fruit?  What was the texture and stone cell "count" like.

Also, who was it that was eating the fruit?

I don't know the ladies name who was eating the fruit, she was helping out in the field..She said to her co-worker,  "this sapodilla tastes like mamey!"...they both tasted it and agreed...and then I tasted it..and agreed.

the texture wasn't too remarkable or granular...and the fruit was medium sized.  The red/orange color really reminded me of a mix between sapodilla and mamey...and I don't think I've ever seen a sapodilla with as much coloration...(but it could have been just that one fruit).  I'm not the most experienced sapodilla taster...I've only eaten about 5 types.

I think it was from one of the seedling trees they have out front in the field near the office...and it's not a type that's commonly sold.

I've tasted many mamey and sapodillas from the Yucatan and they have their own distinct taste. I have pics of huge sapollidas from oxcutcab which were about the same size as a 2 pound mamey.

this fruit has been haunting me!

I'm on a mission to go back to Zills to find out which one this is (and buy one)

it has an orange red flesh, the fruit was medium sized, elongated, and taste like sapodilla/mamey.

I will try my best!!

but I'm afraid it's one of the random cultivars they have planted out front, that isnt being propagated now!

I'm with you on that idea. Somewhere on this T.F.Forum, there's a Thread that talks about a sapodilla in South America that is the size of a mamey. If the overall general quality of that fruit is good, now that's a sapodilla (grafted) fruit tree that I'd definitely like to get my hands on.

A friend of mine here in Vallarta has some of those! Is a Sapodilla but with a kind of red flesh instead of the regular beige/ brown  one, and a some mamey notes, some people believe is a hybrid between these two, hence the popular name here " mamey- sapote" as sapodilla is refer here as " Chico Sapote"

I have Gigantia in #3 , 7 , and one #15 for me. Who said they are not heavy producers. I have to thin the fruit so they don't break limbs It is orange color inside taste more like sapidilla brown sugar than mammey which I think is like pumpkin These four are all Gigantia.

Here is a video from Lara Farms, where he gives reviews on a few Sapodilla ( Nispero ) varieties.  because of this video and other research I purchased a Hasya.

"Morena" has the darker coloration, but Hasya reportedly has better flavor and texture.

Tropicdude, thanks for the videos. Besides making my mouth water, they also make me really glad that I have two of the varieties that Mr. Lara speaks very fondly of, 'Hasya' and 'Tikal.'

The 'Hasya,' I just planted recently, and it's already producing fruit yearly consistently and deliciously.

I have two 'Tikal' trees and I love'm because they produce tasty fruit like there's no tomorrow consistently each and every year.

A perfectly ripe sapodilla, like the ones in Tropicdude's selected video of Mr. Lara, is a high quality fruit that could get you addicted to it, just as I have become addicted to it.  ;)

Tasted the gigantica recently...and it's nothing like the sapodilla I tasted before, that reminded me of mamey....it had a much lighter colored flesh...reminded me of silas woods but much larger.

I will have to investigate this further...I'm almost sure it's a variety that Zill's is growing, but not propagating.

So how would you rate gigantia?  If I remember correctly, you like Silas Woods a lot.

My mom gave me a sapodilla seedling that was given to her by a friend.  The friend called it sapodilla de mamey, claiming it was different than sapodilla.  Could just be a crazy old cuban woman or maybe she has what you are looking for.  The seedling looks like a sapodilla to me.  I will push my mom to try to get a fruit to see if there is any truth to it.

Gigantica was a good fruit.  Large, sugar sweet...none of that cinnamon taste I've detected in other varieties.

Funny because I've heard gigantica is red on the inside...the one I had was light colored, like silas woods.

I hope you and Raul have found these mystical mamey-like sapodillas!
