Hi all. I'm super-tempted by the tt description of the Honeymoon variegated guava. But I know they're selling plants and don't always have the most accurate descriptions. Does anyone have any first hand experience with this variety? I'm looking for a great tasting fruit on the less mealy (for a guava) side. Does this one qualify?

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / WTB avocado scions
« on: April 26, 2017, 10:57:56 AM »
Hi everyone! I'm desperately seeking scions of:
Nishikawa
Wurtz
Day
Kampong
I'll of course pay for the scion, your trouble, and shipping to Miami. Happy to wait for the best time to take quality scions - I don't know when that is - for the best chance that the grafts take.
Any leads please let me know! Thank you!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / E. uniflora tip dieback
« on: April 03, 2017, 10:56:15 AM »
Hi all,
All of my in ground surinam cherries are growing well except for pretty much constant tip dieback - what gives? The new growth dries out, turns brown and shrivels up. It's not all the tips so the plants keep growing, but the dieback is frustrating and I can't figure out why it's happening. Has anyone else experienced this, or have an idea of the cause/a solution? Thanks!
Sorry for the awful photo - the sun was going down and there wasn't enough light to focus where I wanted. The two blurry brown blobs in the foreground are good examples of the dieback I'm talking about  :P, and in the center top background there's actually one in focus if you look closely.

Citrus General Discussion / what's going on with my mandarin?
« on: April 03, 2017, 10:48:59 AM »
Hi everyone, I have a mandarin tree that I stupidly let hold quite a few fruit last year, its first year in the ground. Since then it's been completely dormant while the other citrus planted at the same time have been putting on tons of growth. So that's to be expected and I wasn't worried, except that the leaves started showing the discoloration you see in the photos. For awhile it's been like this and hasn't put out a single new leaf. Now finally it's covered with buds, which is encouraging, but I'm still wondering what if anything I should be doing about the issues with the older leaves - I'd prefer the new leaves not end up looking the same. Is it a nutrient issue? I can't match it to the photos I find online of any particular deficiency. Thanks for your input!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / cherimoya first flowers - advice needed
« on: March 22, 2017, 01:20:13 PM »
Hi all! I have 2 seedling El Bumpos, one is in-ground since July of last year and the other (which germinated around the same time but has always lagged behind the other in size) is still in a medium nursery bag on the patio - I was going to plant it out at the start of the rainy season this year. It recently lost all its leaves, and now is budding out including what I'm almost sure are 4 flower buds! I'm in a marginal climate for cherimoya and was doubting they would ever fruit, but this one looks like at least it wants to try! Anyway, questions are,
why is the one in the bag flowering and not the one in the ground?
does it have a chance to hold fruit being in a relatively small bag?
is there anything in particular I should do for the flowering plant to encourage it to hold a fruit?
Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / BuyRareSeeds.com?
« on: March 14, 2017, 08:42:09 PM »
I'm thinking of buying some Plukenetia Huayllabambana seeds from them but not if they're not reliable. Anyone have any experience good or bad to share?

I've planted like a million Honeymoon guava seeds. Germination is like 99%, but they all die before a set of true leaves can form - cotyledons turn brown from the tips and that's all she wrote. I've read this is common, but knowing that doesn't help much. Has anyone successfully gotten a plant from one of these seeds? Any suggestions on how to do it?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Need more details about Phoenix mango
« on: March 09, 2017, 12:00:04 PM »
Seems better to start a new topic for this I guess. I'm getting closer to pulling the trigger on the mango trees purchase and I came upon the relatively new Phoenix. I've done the searching but find very little specific info on it other than that most people seem to think it's top tier (unless I'm missing a more detailed discussion, in which case I'd welcome a link). My current list is Pickering, Kesar, Maha, Sweet Tart, Edgar and Venus - how does Phoenix compare with ST and Venus in terms of taste, disease resistance, tree size/vigor, and season? What's top tier about it? Thanks in advance.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / is this a loquat seedling?
« on: March 07, 2017, 02:16:28 PM »
My dh went to a friend's place to scoop up coffee seedlings and this one got caught up in the bunch. I know there's loquat on the property. Is this a baby loquat?

Hi all,
I know if you want to prevent a young mango tree from fruiting you should wait and cull the small fruit, not the flowers, so it won't try to flower again. Does this hold true for other grafted fruit trees as well like citrus and avocado? I have a very young Meyer lemon graft with tons of flower buds and I'm tempted to pinch the buds so it will concentrate on a vegetative flush, but I don't know if that will make it want to flower again. Should I wait for the fruit? (asked on the citrus forum but got no responses, and I'm interested to know if this is a general rule for all fruiting trees.)
Thanks!

Citrus General Discussion / when to cull fruit on young graft
« on: February 27, 2017, 05:01:10 PM »
My 6-month-old Meyer lemon graft is flowering. It's way too small for fruit - should I cull the blooms themselves or wait for small fruit to form like with mangoes? Thanks for your help.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / which tropicals prefer a dry season?
« on: February 25, 2017, 12:28:05 PM »
Hi all. I'm installing irrigation and wondering which of my plants might be better off without it. Rather than listing what I have, which will expand with time anyway, can you-all tell me which of the tropical fruiting species do/produce better with a dry season? Thanks in advance!

Citrus General Discussion / citrus and temperature
« on: February 11, 2017, 10:44:17 AM »
This might ramble a bit so excuse me in advance - maybe if I get some responses they will help me clarify my questions! I'm trying to understand citrus and its temperature needs. I live in a tropical environment, temps never lower than the high 50s and more often only to the low 60s at night. My navel oranges from a very young tree are already scrumptious, as good as any I ever bought when I lived in California. So they don't seem to be lacking for cold weather. But the grapefruits I've had here have been inedibly sour, and I've read that some citrus needs cold weather to "sweeten up". On the other hand, I've read comments here that people's grapefruits didn't sweeten up because they didn't get the necessary heat. Now I'm confused.
Most info I read is speaking to people in temperate zones where the concern is cold tolerance. But what about lack of cold tolerance?
What are the "rules" about citrus and temperatures? Which varieties will produce good fruit with no chill to speak of?

Citrus General Discussion / choosing a pumello in FL
« on: February 09, 2017, 04:37:29 PM »
I have a friend who's considering a pumello tree purchase in Florida. His choices are Hirado Buntan, Red Shaddock and Siamese Sweet. He says the seller says that Red Shaddock has the most intense flavor but is a huge tree, while Siamese Sweet is a bit more insipid but a more manageable tree. He's also considering the Oroblanco hybrid. I haven't tried the pumellos so I can't help him decide - can anyone here chime in with an opinion? Thanks in advance.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / is this nopal/prickly pear?
« on: January 29, 2017, 12:38:37 PM »

Looks like it from a distance, but the fruit are so tiny and the pads don't have those nasty spines I see when I look for nopal images online. I really want to eat the pads, but I don't know if it's the right plant! Can anyone help?

Hi all, I was just reviewing Carlos's site and see that he hasn't updated his pages on Murashige or Nishikawa avocados in over a year. I'm interested in both these varieties in a West Indies-favoring climate. Does anyone have experience with how these trees are growing/producing in FL? The fruit on both look fantastic. Also, JF mentioned Mantequilla on another post here, but I can find no further info on it - anyone?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / which 5 mangoes for me - help!
« on: January 09, 2017, 10:35:17 AM »
I know this has been done to death and YES, I've spent hours and hours of my life searching the forum for everyone's mango opinions. But often you mango experts are talking amongst yourselves under the correct assumption that you've all tasted all the varieties in question and can make comparisons based on that common knowledge. So I'm posing the question as someone who has tried almost no mangoes, but I know some things I like/ don't like and some preferences I have for the trees. So here goes:
I'd like to have 5 mangoes. I hate Hadens, which is the #1 grafted mango here. I hate them because they're like dental floss with an insipid, watery mango flavor. Yuck. There are 2 other mangoes here - small yellow ones many of which are probably seedlings, with varying levels of fiber. If they're not too fibrous, I can enjoy them because they have a stronger flavor with a resiny kick. Not terrible. The other grafted mango here is Irwin. I've had only one of those - they're not at all common - but it was quite good. Compared to a Haden, it was spectacular. I've scoured the forum for info on Irwin and have seen that it's no where near top tier, but the one I had didn't have internal breakdown or any other nastiness, so I guess I got lucky. (I'm considering getting an Irwin tree just because it's the one decent mango available here. But it doesn't count towards my 5.)
So I hate Hadens, I like some resin flavor. I don't really want heavy citrus flavors in my mango because I prefer to get my citrus flavors from citrus (for that I've ruled out LZ). I like intense flavors but not just straight sugar bombs (Rob's description of Cotton Candy put me off). I hate jelly seed, and while creamy sounds nice, mushy definitely does not. We do have anthracnose around here so resistance is important - we're not going to spray. Not being an overly giant tree would be great too. My plan is to bring down 2 already grafted trees and get scions for the other 3 to graft - one day I'll have to get a mango graft to take!
I've got 4 on my list so far: Pickering (for size, precocity, disease resistance, consistent production and good quality fruit, though I know many sneer at the Pickering, I've also seen quite a few positive reviews), Sweet Tart, Maha, and Kesar. I'm open to debate any of those, but they got on my list from the extensive forum searching that I've done so far - those 4 seem to consistently stand out positively in ways that appeal to me.
If you were me, what 5 would you choose? And which 2 would you buy already grafted, while grafting the other 3? Remember, I've never tasted the top tiers, so no fair using them as reference points! (also no fair suggesting varieties I could only get if I lived in FL and knew the secret handshake!  ;))
Thanks everyone!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / eventual size of air-layered macadamia?
« on: October 01, 2016, 09:02:43 PM »
I have one, trying to figure out how much space it's going to need. Anyone have any idea?

Something's eating my coffee berries when they're just starting to ripen. I thought birds, but now I'm not so sure. Whatever it is is stripping the fruit and leaving the beans on the tree, which seems like pretty delicate work for a bird beak. Judging by the way they attack my tomatoes and leave bits of them strewn all over the ground, I would expect to see similar carnage with the coffee. I guess there are small birds that could be that precise, but does anyone have experience with critters eating coffee in this way? Any idea what I'm dealing with? Thanks!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / shipping mango tree
« on: August 30, 2016, 10:53:27 AM »
Could a mango tree survive 3 weeks shipping by boat if it had some air (not sealed air-tight in a box)?

73
Hi all. I just finished my third round of attempts at grafting mango with a very consistent 0% take. (On the upside I got about 100% takes on citrus and finally even a couple of avocados, so overall my average is improving.) Now I have several mango root stocks that I will keep hacking up until I get a damn take, but in the meantime, they've outgrown their bags. I could transplant them to bigger bags or I could plant them out. I'd prefer to plant them out, frankly, because I'd prefer to dig smaller holes now rather than bigger holes later, plus I hate scrounging for potting soil. But what would my chances be grafting on mango in the ground? If they'd be even worse, it's probably not worth it - I really really really do want to successfully graft mango one day. Do the expert mango grafters have opinions about in the ground vs in a pot grafting? What would you do if you were me?

74
Meaning, if you have 2 trees that need a distance of 4 meters between them, is measuring 4 meters down a steep slope the same as on flat land? Or does one need to adjust in some way for the slope? This is a hard question to google :)

Tropical Fruit Discussion / pruning mysore raspberry
« on: August 15, 2016, 10:11:11 AM »
Does anyone on the forum have a mysore raspberry? If so, can you tell me how/when to prune? I've got one getting out of control and all the detailed info I find online is for regular temperate varieties. Guidance appreciated!
