Tropical Fruit Discussion / Big problem with bees
« on: May 16, 2023, 02:48:01 PM »
Went to use the Weber kettle BBQ and discovered a huge hive of bees taking up 80% of the space between grill and cover.

Any ideas on how to deal with it????

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Lotsa mangos this year!!!
« on: May 18, 2020, 11:48:47 AM »
My Glenn, Pickering and Sweet Tart are totally loaded this year.  I repaired the irrigation in these areas and the three trees look like they will produce twice the fruit of last year.  Good thing I have lotsa neighbors that love em.  Believe it or not one of them is a guy  from New England and doesn't like mangos!!!  Has no idea what he's missing!!!

« on: November 20, 2019, 08:22:54 PM »
Just finished topping the big tree.  Lowered the height by 5 feet..  Harvest was about 80 fruit.  Great tasting cado but enough is enough.  Will be bringing a few boxes to the Treasure Coast Rare Fruit club tomorrow night.   As I've said before --- great tasting little fruit!!!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / My new Sweet Tart is full of fruit.
« on: March 21, 2018, 04:49:43 PM »
My new Sweet Tart went in the ground last year.  I has 30 to 40 small fruit now.  Was bought at Excalibur  - 45 gal pot.   Can't wait.

I forgot which of the two spray tanks is used for fertilizer and which for Roundup.  Found the smaller one first that had a bunch of mix left over so I used it.

Turned out to be the fertilizer solution.  Further search found the Roundup sprayer which is clearly marked for weed killer.   Mixed up a new batch and went at it.  I hope this never happens again!!!  It's too hot out there !!!!!!!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Has anyone else heard of this problem?
« on: May 03, 2017, 02:19:03 PM »
Had to post this story after what has been going on lately. I have a fenced in yard with a pool and enclosure. I walk the 3 dogs outside the enclosure. Used to leave the poop and bag it up in the AM. About a month ago the dog poop started disappearing overnite!!!!!

Turned out to be rats. I now have to pick it up before nightfall.  And I'm not in the gongfermors union!
Now I set traps.

I also spread around some Tomcat bait chunks over the fence in the wooded lot next door.
And I hate having rats near my mango, banana and avocado trees.

Gimme a break
!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Fastest way to get the dogs in from the yard - yell bananas.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Unknown Avo and Cogshall need advice
« on: April 09, 2014, 10:52:46 AM »
My first larger trees shot panicles and have small fruit.  Haven't ferted, sprayed or pruned  yet this year.  Did my first grafts on the Avo - waiting for signs of life.

What should I be doing now?  Took pics of each side.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Tori Loquat attacked! Aaackkkkkk!
« on: March 14, 2014, 12:07:49 PM »
I got this grafted Tori loquat from Adam a year ago.  Was a 1ft tall bareroot.  It fruited already and 11 fruit took.  Working outside I passed by and saw 2 fruit got nibbled on.  Still hanging on the tree - one was gouged out missing the seed and another was chewed on a bit.  Broke them off and brought the tree into the pool enclosure.   I'm gonna taste these guys this year!!!

My guess is a squirrel.  What do you think?  Time to get some more Mackintosh apples and bait both traps again.

Adam will be doing his grafting presentation tonight at the Treasure Coast Rare Fruit club in Ft Pierce.
And don't forget guys --- we have an auction table.  Adam usually brings grafted plants some of which are new, rare and hard to get.  Seven thirty PM.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Papaya sex manipulation.
« on: July 18, 2013, 08:42:26 AM »
I planted a papaya seedling I won at the club raffle.  It's 3 ft tall now and sprouts only male flowers.   The guy that started it said to cut the top off down low leaving 6 to 12 inches of trunk.  He did this to one of his with only male blooms and it grew 2 trunks  which bore only female flowers.

Really want to grow this one out as it bears the only papaya fruit I have been able to eat so far.  Yellow flesh with great taste with no trace of vomitus-ness.  Almost forgot about Red Lady.  It's good too but this yellow one is better.

Sounds like it will work --- or is it a toss up and male flowering will recommence?  :-\

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Avocado drop offs
« on: July 04, 2013, 11:48:17 AM »
Two questions.

Has anyone tried to germinate the seeds of small half to one inch avos that drop early?

And is there any point to trying this with the loads of small drop-offs we all get?  Assuming they germinate.

Flowered at 11 ft.

How is everybody's doing?

Just got back from a trip by boat to Europe.  In Barcelona visited the Ramblas area and ran into the Mercat de La Boqueria. It's a large public market in the Ciutat Vella district of Barcelona, Catalonya, Spain.

Saw a fruit stand with Cherimoya, Nispero and Rambutan.  Took a Cherimoya back to the hotel and had it for dinner with a baguette of Jamon Serrano.  Wonderful!   Liked the Cheri a lot but the wife sorta freaked out on the big black seeds.  Said it was ok.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Banana haul at Canal Point
« on: February 17, 2013, 03:50:59 PM »
Took a trip over to fellow banana enthusiast Nick's place on Sat and took home some pups and fruit.  He's growing naners on 2 acres --- plus more at home.

Couple of Hua Moa, a Njali Poovan and a dwarf horn.

Also a bunch of HM fruit at 14 lbs.  Tostones time!!!   One of these guys is called a rompeculo by the ladies at the market.  Pic left side.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Green bananas turn red - Sumatrana x Gran Nain
« on: February 12, 2013, 10:35:48 AM »
I used to say I never grew red skinned naners. Well it looks like I do now.  This is the first time this thing produced a flower.

The first hand that showed itself had green fingers.

Nine days later all the fingers durned deep maroon red.  When the red started I thought the fruit was spoiling. Today I'm sure they're OK.

Nice coloration on pups.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Little Pickering doesn't look so good - HELP!
« on: January 07, 2013, 09:30:56 AM »
Good flowering but the flower stems look red and drying up.  Dry leaf edges.   Thinking the 15 gal Jackpot isn't helping at this stage of growth.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Avocado ID
« on: December 29, 2012, 08:29:58 AM »
Visited the cousins in Homestead last week and took some avocados home.  Variety unknown.  The tree is 20 years old and 25 ft tall.   Fruit weight averaged 2 1/4 lbs.

I know it is a west indian cause of the soft texture when ripe.  Put them in paper bags and they ripened fast.   Tasted weak and watery.  Any ideas?

The Carrie mango was also huge and loaded with flowers.   And I forgot the camera - woof!
