Anyone selling Junglesop (Anonidium mannii)seeds?
« on: October 22, 2020, 01:53:58 AM »
Hi,
I was wondering if anyone here has any Junglesop (Anonidium mannii) seeds for sale. I really want to grow this particular species mostly as a curiosity since I understand that fruit quality is very variable. Or perhaps someone knows where I can buy the seeds from?

In 2012 many forum members obtained seeds as quite a few came out of a few African countries at the time. Some of those must be close to bearing now.

I often communicate with ForestHouseCameroon and they almost always have it on sale, but in the context of the pandemic, Cameroon's mail is now limited in international delivery.

Thank you all for your responses.  I wonder if anybody in the USA has successfully fruited this species and has seedlings for sale.  Has anyone been able to graft Junglesop and propagate it that way?  The reason I ask...is because maybe someone is selling nursery specimens of this plant.  I wonder if one could use mountain soursop or pond apple as a rootstock (or any other Annona that is conventionally used as a rootstock).

I recently received 12 seeds from ForestHouseCameroon, Andreas Gia (another forum member) and I, are beginning to grow them out in houston, we may be able to share a seedling/sprouted seed in the near future

To this day no one has fruited it in the US. Can take up to 20 years to fruit.

Wow! 20 years!  That’s worse than Durian and Jaboticaba.  Anyways, I would love to plant one anyways here in Hawaii.  elouicious, if you ever have any seeds or seedlings for sale, I would gladly buy them from you.

I am a new member but I was under the (apparently mistaken?) idea FHC was defunct - how are they reachable?

Of course, unfortunately the shipping from cameroon took more than two months with the dual edged sword of a lot of germinated seed but still with some of them dried out, I know at least 2 are growing (one for Andreas one for me at least) after that I will reach out about sharing

They are not very active on this site any more but can still be reached through their gmail, they were hit pretty hard with shipping during covid so I am not sure whether or not they are shipping right now but they are certainly still active

I could swear recently on some site, maybe a rare seed dealer website, that they claimed it has fruited just once in the U.S.  Maybe there’s been more since it was written. Definitely a species worth experimenting with, I would give it a shot too if I could get my hands on some seeds!

A large seedling was offered here for $1,000 a few years ago.
Haven’t heard an updated report on anyone growing them in years.
I suspect that many do not make it.
How are the Hawaii A. Manni plant outs looking though or was anyone on it?

I have about 5 or so but I’m not sure how they are doing. They sent a huge taproot down and the seed lifted off the ground but they haven’t done anything since. Been about 2 weeks now.
I know someone who has a few trees on their property but they are not producing age.

The best time to plant a fruit tree was 20 years ago. The next best time to plant one is now.

New_Jungle, would you happen to know where I could get seeds in Hawaii for Jungle sop?  Has anyone in Hawaii tried grafting or air layering Jungle sops as an alternative means of propagating them?

New_Jungle, I just read your message about a seed source.  Sorry, I'm still new to using this forum.

There are a couple of large trees at Frankie's nursery. No flowers or fruit have been seen on the trees yet. I can take pictures if interested.

EDIT: It has flowered before, but no fruit.

I dont sell, but I got a couple seeds not too long ago from fruitlovers. They were the last ones at the time, but you can check on his website if he has any.

Also today I found a flower on one of the junglesop trees at Frankie's. Apparently it has flowered in the past, but never set fruit. They are around 20ish years old. Frank tells me he hasn't tried hand pollinating. I'll post some pictures later today.

I dont mind spending any amount of money to preserve a fruit that is so powerful to the human race medicinal and biodiversity wise. These are the fruits we should be preserving the fruits that heal the nation.
I would attempt grafting the jungle sop to my mountain sop, soursop, ilamas, and or possibly my regular cherimoya. It is definitely worth a try and worth all my paychecks!
Please keep us in the loop!!! Annona worldwide :)
