Had a variegated langsat once, but no photo. There used to be a nursery in USA that specialized in variegated plants, and they had an incredible collection, but went belly up after many years in bizz. Forget their name right now?

found a variegated mango!

Looks like variegated means weak!  variegated plants always seem like vampires...afraid of the sun.

Variegated people are not so attractive.  ;)  Wonder why so many people find variegated plants attractive? They're really just mutants. ;)

Sorry for the slow response, but I had to wait to take a photo over at Gene's of a few of his varigated plants. The canistel leaves at upper left have yellow varigation, the fruit are solid yellow. Another canistel at his garden (lower left) has a pale varigation, almost white, and quite often the leaves are burned by the sun. The sapodilla leaves at upper right are from a 30 year old tree that has large round gritty fruit. The varigated prickly pear at lower right is something I picked up at the local Green Market last week.

Someone on Ebay is selling a Variegated Mangosteen.   I would think this would not be vary beneficial for production, I have read that variegated plants are more sensitive to sunlight, ( can burn easily ) and have less chlorophyll.   in a slow growing already sun shy plant like mangosteen I do not see why anyone would want it except as a curiosity.

I also came across a report that variegated citrus is less susceptible to some pest.   maybe the streaks of yellow hurt the bugs eyes? lol :o

Almost all variegated plants are just a curiosity. Really they are nature's mutants, and not a very useful mutation at that. But it is attractive to the human eye. Some bugs don't find variegations so attractive.  ;) Really some bugs are just confused as they are cued in by colors and the variegation throws them off course. Variegated eureka lemon is popular here, and it doesn't seem to affect production too much. The striped fruits are really neat looking.

Suggest putting them in a zip lock bag with slightly moistened vermiculite, wrap tightly and held together with rubber bands..

How is your caimito graft holding up that I did?  Mine defoliated, but might survive.

The variegated sapodilla looks good still...and the inverted canistel defoliated, but might survive...

I think I had one that showed signs of being variegated but after a few years it went away(wasnt as into grafting back then). I also have(had) varigated noni, and I still have a variegated Luma species. Its really pretty. I dont particularly look for ornamental characteristics, but in the past (middle school) one of the branches on my wall of roses was variegated. I was really interested in it and wanted to propagate it but when they pruned the tree back the cut it all off. I might have some others but the Luma is the coolest looking and rarest. That variegated Sapodilla looks really cool!

Oh, wow, nice variegated starcherry. Going to my wish list now. :D Adam, if the stem of your mango is still variegated there is a hope when you top the tree it will push new branches with variegated leaves. Happened to one of my variegatees ones. Keep an eye on it, don't lose it. I have a bad luck with mango seedlings, they always and up dead but I keep trying.  :)

I still have a variegated Grimal I'm observing...waiting for the next flush of growth to come out to see if the variegation holds true.

Still have variegated leaves on that pitangatuba Adam. Roughly 50% come out with two shades of white.

I will make sure it gets a chance to grow!

Don,

That will be super cool if the pitangatuba keeps holding variegation !

Let us know!

does a single leaf count ?
and this is strange, because last year, i noticed the same thing.
1 leaf (no, not the same leaf, it defoliated last winter)

Yes that leaf is variegated, but if there are only one or two leaves on the tree, they will be barely noticeable.

People pay big bucks for the variegated varieties because the coloration pattern of the foliage is so striking

Some of the trees that are sold as variegated easily revert to all green, or all white.

A stable, evenly distributed variegated pattern is what you want.

why have I never seen a variegated Surinam Cherry?  Has anyone ever seen one?  It's such a common plant, you'd think it would be easy to find?

I was pulling weeds near my front door, and spotted this variegated Eugenia uniflora growing through the cracks in my pavers!

what are the chances the one time i've seen a variegated pitanga, that it would be growing between the cracks on my porch, and impossible to uproot without causing harm?!

i wanted to pull up the paver, but it was set in concrete.....I had to pull the plant up, and it snapped in half...i grafted the top of the plant that snapped off, and planted the lower half with the roots....

I doubt the variegation will hold, but it's worth a shot!

Nice, Adam. I hope the graft will take and the other half will survive. That stubborn variegated sapodilla is doing the same as the previous ones, it's not going to survive this time too. I don't know what I am doing wrong. I should probably try a different grafting technique. What do you think?

maybe it has to do with timing of when i'm taking scions??  sorry to hear this Galka...I will keep providing you with scions/rootstock until you get one to take...and I will eventually try to graft some again.

Thank you,  Adam. Maybe it's better to take scions when the plant starts to push new buds? Water it good prior taking scions? Also, next time I will take all the leaves off and wrap it with the clear tape then graft.

I'm not sure if that will help, because I never could get takes when I defoliated the scions, the only success I've had is when I bag them

I should try to root them in water. Ones I almost got it but the scion was too small I think and it failed after pushing new leaves. How is the variegated Grimal doing?

variegated Grimal is same size, barely growing, not dead, but not any growth really...I won't be surprised if it reverts to all green or just dies.

Hey Everyone,
When this thread started, I ooh-ed and ah-ed at the spectacular anomalies of the plant world. I wished I had something spectacular to add too. Well, I ordered a big order of seeds from Maryoto in the Winter (one of the best seed guys in the world), and my seeds arrived fresh and ready to be sown. I plopped my seeds in cups full of soil and put them on a heat mat, with little baggies on each cup to trap humidity. As the month went on, my seeds started to germinate. One cup in particular germinated 3 seeds. Now, I am pretty sure these are Dimocarpus Melisanus, but it's possible it is Nephelium Mainganyi, because I shifted a couple cups. Stupidly, I lost track of what was what, but I'm pretty sure it's Dimocarpus.

Just a couple of weeks ago, I finally repotted the 3 sprouts, and because I never removed the baggie I never got a good look at the seedlings. I could see a bit, and thought some of the leaves were sun damaged from being in the window ... when I removed the baggie lo-and-behold one of the seedlings wasn't sun burned at all. It's variegated. Finally, I have something to share on this thread. Enjoy. It may be the only one. :)

Galka,

that is a crazy looking pitanga...i believe it was one of the smooth type...

i planted a bunch of seeds, and that one turned out to be the runt...

it seriously stayed less than 4 inch tall for about 2yr...or maybe longer...

then I gave it to you, because it wasn't dead yet, and it didn't look horrible...lol I like to give weird plants to customers, as a gift as they're leaving sometimes...If i kept it...it probably would have died....

i hope u get some fruit set soon, and it taste pretty good...

keep us posted.

Some farms are not open to the public.
It’s really hard to go to a fruit farm , especially one as unique as FFF , and not get caught up for a few hours. It’s a wonderland like your eyes have never seen ( if your really into that sort of thing).
That can add up quick to a lack of productivity and keeping up with everything if your a 1 man farming machine. How could one go to the Northern Plinia motherland and not care to look , listen and learn?

Good Subject Adam (Flying fruit fox)

The Above picture JoeP450
Are you going to graft some of those white leaves onto the tree already growing ?

I remember reading about a grape
Cliff Ambers took pollen , and placed it under x rays, to make variegated offspring
He Grafted the Grapes since they were almost all pure white to keep alive.
next time I go to the dentist I plan to spread pollen all over the leaded chest mat when they do the X rays ?

I wonder if sun spots have anything to do with it ?
maybe Vampirism a rainbow landing right on your  flowers Stealing all the color of the next offspring ?

I like basswood trees (Tilia americana) got those little white leaves already against the round dark green leaves.
Not fruit tree's but I like the Variegated Ginkgo as well, but there are tons of  anomalies in the nursery trade.
Mostly not so much fruit trees I see , but landscaping trees.

Shoot not on topic, but If I were to go by there I'd work for free
just to see what he's got try to learn something new
Of coarse I know a lot of people, that would say that ,
and just end up trying to drink beer or something (that's best for after work or midway through)

I know some people prefer to work alone with certain things (like myself in certain work)
so I could respect that as well.

I've done that already with people visiting places (and at friends )
I prefer not to sit idle.
