Wonderful idea Tim.

I will be sure to make an entry.

I like this better than my silly poetry contest.

This really encourages people to participate, instead of watching from the sidelines.  I love to see added incentive, for new members to join.  Other than the fact that this place is like a book, that you can ask questions to, and its continually updated.  I consider this forum one of the greatest ways to learn, aside from visiting others gardens in person.

Thanks Tim  :)

So the subject in the photo has to be a fruit or plant of a tropical nature, correct? Your goat photo threw me off.

lololol

the goat who threw you off, and your comment for some reason made me smile.

I guess it's just so random it's hilarious...I keep thinking about that goat, who it's with, what it's thinking, if he'll ever return one day

hahaha

Lol   must have been a good curry dinner for some folks, that's why I said  *** not at all related to tropical fruits *** in my picture.

Yes, photo must be sub/tropical fruit or fruit tree related.
Both submissions so far are within the rules.  Tomas's picture is perfect.  Null's picture, though showcasing the praying mantis, is related cuz it's sitting on a banana plant.

So now it's just fruits? How about leaves of a tropical plant?  ;D Just giving you a hard time.

Yeah, I'm wondering too....
I was thinking of submitting something along the lines of a fruit tree in flower.

Just fruits ... if it's still hanging on the tree that happens to be flowering, even better ;D

Don't mean to beat a dead horse but....
If someone submits a photo of a fruit tree and it has flower and fruit on it, how is the judging done.

Is it judged based primarily on the photo as a whole, or is it judged mainly on how the fruit in the photo looks?

The "fruit must be present" criteria eliminates photos I was thinking of that have no fruit on the tree (just a fruiting tree in flower), but now I'm wondering if I should submit something that has really young fruit on it (because I think the photo is nice but if you just look at the fruit it isn't so impressive)

Good question, what if the fruit is still developing and the size of a nickel or smaller? Does it have to be a fruit close to full ripeness?

I thought this was supposed to be an easy giveaway?  ;D

Primarily on the photo as a whole, but fruit(s) must be present.
As long as I can tell it's a fruit.  Does not have to be of of ripe fruits, eg: a cluster of developing avocados will work.

Opuntia sp., 1 ripe fruit with many other fruits at various stages. Just for reference that ripe fruit is about the size of a medium apple. I made sure to get a pad of this plant! Possibly about +300 fruits on the plant as whole, I was unable to get an overview picture (since the Opuntia was overhanging a fence).

Howdy Adam,
Thanks, Buddy...happy you liked the assortment :) Those persimmons are from the same tree(don't know the cv) the red one is fully ripe...i wouldn't dare to bite into the other one :o  Them passions are two types of edulis x flavicarpa and flavicarpa. Those monstera's took very long to ripen :o The abacaxi was truly amazing and very sweet...i  thought it would be on the sour side :-[ Hopefully, the 2nd generation will bear larger fruits :)

A photo of a couple loosing their Jackfruit virginity?  Sounds too juicy for a family board to me.  I hope it isn't disqualified  ;)

How long did it take you guys to process the Jackfruit?  I must admit that I'm really very bad at processing Jackfruit since the arils are surrounded by tough rubbery strands.  The first time I took apart a Jackfruit it took me around 3 hours; while I've gotten better at it I think I need to take a "disassembling a Jackfruit 101" course.

This photo taken in Sri Lanka by me in July 2011. It illustrates the size of old seedling durian. It was really big and very impressive tree, although photo does not do full justice. You need to zoom to a full size, and than start noticing small green dots (durians). There was 300+ durians on this tree. It was impossible to count even on one main branch. Notice slippery stainless steel sheet on the trunk, meant to prevent squirrels and monkeys climbing the tree. Once you click on the picture, click one more time for a full zoom.

Luke,
Awesome Jackfruit you have there 8) I presume you bought this Jack from the Chinese Market? I wish i had a China Town over here :-\

DurioLuva,
WoW that Durian tree is fully loaded with fruits 8) I reckon this tree is at least 80 years old...from what i read, the older the tree, the better. People pay good amount of dough/cash, to buy fruits from old trees.

Thanks Steven,

There were another two very big trees, and temporarily guard shelter set up to collect falling durians. Owner is making serious dough, especially for this part of the world. :) But the guard undercut official market rates, and probably the real owner by selling me two durians close to $2 each.

Jackfruits from US supermarkets are quite expensive $2/lb. Those sold in the northern states are usually under ripe, than I have no choice but stir fry it for rice and curry. :)

Durian Lover: what a great photo! If I were the owner I'd have an occasional give-away, anyone who can stand under the tree and catch a falling durian with their hands can have it for free. Maybe titled the event as Tough Man of Sri Lanka? Kinda like the Tough Guy shows I see on TV here in the USA. 8-))

Hi DurianLover,
Another two more, that's truly awesome 8) Those huge trees will definitely supplement the income for the owner...which is great. Guard shelters is also common in Southeast Asia and the durian is also used as bait to attract animals to get hunted. Apart from the stainless sheets...if i remember correctly, in Malaysia when monkeys are damaging the crop, they catch an individual monkey and paint him/her...to chase the troop away from the plantation...since the family doesn't  recognize this individual ;D way better than killing them :)

huertasurbanas  - please submit a picture that includes tropical/subtropical fruit(s), your entry falls a tad short if that's your purpose.

Hi, today I took photos to a 50 or so years old feijoa we found in my city, Junin, Buenos Aires, Argentina... it's 6 metters tall.

As Adam stated earlier in tbis thread, shipping a mango into the state of Florida is a nono...therefore if Tim is doing the right thing, the Floridians are not eligible for the prize.

By the way, Tim, I like your photo of the dragonfruit...simple, vibrant and well done.  Would look evn better with a glossy black background.

some pictures may need to be clicked on (like opening a link), it will show the true resolution and size of the picture!!

The way some pictures are sized, they look more prominent, or more aesthetic, before or after clicking the picture!!

Best of luck to everyone,

especially Tomas, because I voted for him!!!

I see the voting process flawed, if everyone can vote for their own. Those who chose not to vote for their picture would be at a disadvantage, especially if only 3 or 4 votes are needed to win.

I see what you are saying, but I think it will all work out.

If you want to vote for yourself that's fine, and you'll be more likely to win.

If you don't vote for yourself, you may have lessened your chance of winning, but in the end, the best photo should attract enough votes to cancel out the one you could cast for yourself!

(maybe make a rule, so you can't vote for yourself? this may stop the problem?)

For those who haven't voted, PLEASE help our entrants by casting yours.  It should only take a few seconds.  Hard to believe we've only gotten 28 votes from 21 entries out of 500+ members, provided there are lots of inactive members, there should be plenty more to determine this.

If Tomas can't receive the tree bare root, I'd be surprised.

If Tim can't legally send the tree, maybe he can auction the tree off here on the forum (for sale), and then give most of the proceeds to Tomas?

That reminds me, I wonder if you could have some auctions, or separate section for auctions on this site??  maybe keep a small portion of the sale to help keep your bills paid, and keep this wonderful forum going strong!

I can understand if these ideas won't work...it's always easier said than done!

Adam,
We've actually been planning an auction for the past few months but like everything else we just never get to it.

Excalibur has been kind enough to donate an Excalibur Red jackfruit to the forum for us to auction to help cover the costs of the forum. Hopefully in the next few weeks I will post it.

how's the auction work?

if you set up the terms in the thread , and trust that the bidders will pay, it should be easy.

just have a deadline for the bidding to end.

would it be a bad idea if I tried to auction a plant as a test run??

or maybe someone else can?

I hope it works out well, and you turn into the tropical fruit eBay.
