Newbie From Nassau...What's my "Zone"

I live in Nassau Bahamas and I'm not to sure which zone I'm in is it...9-10 or 11b?

I would think 11b, you are as far south as the Fl Keys, and have good surrounding warm water..

Hi All and thanks for the welcome,

With my planting zone settled, I'm planing on starting a "Backyard Nursery" and I wish to focus on propagating fruit trees etc. from cuttings or seeds. 

To that end I have a Sugar Apple & Sea Grape tree that have just finished their bountiful crop and was wondering if it's the right time to start prunning them for cuttings as they seem dormant? 

I also have some Thyme coming in from Eleuthera and possibly some Persian Limes from Long Island.

What do you think? Any other suggestions?

What sort of fruits etc. do you grow there in Uganda that I may be familar?

Of exotic fruits we have many of the common ones here in Uganda; Jackfruit, Eugenia uniflora, Annona squamosa, different citrus, melons and some grafted avocado and mango to name a few. Then all the indigenous species; Tamarind being one of them, but the climate is good for just about all tropical and subtropical species though a bit on the dry side.

You live in a beautiful place with great weather. I was there last July, got to try some sea grapes for the 1st time, interesting flavor. They were just growing outside the hotel I was staying at. Driving around Nassau, I saw several huge sapodilla trees, but the fruits were not ripe yet. Are you growing kenep too? Welcome to the forum, and I hope to see some photos of your backyard.

Soren, the USDA zone map only goes up to number 11 at highest, which just indicates you never get below 40F. So i guess the rating system for Africa is a Sunset zone system? Looked up my area and using Sunset rating system i'm a H2. They have H1 for elevations above 2000 feet, and H2 below 2000 feet. Seems pretty useless as there must be over 30 different climate zones here.

Welcome DryLeg Ed.  My suggestion is to get the book, "Florida's Best Fruiting Plants."  by Charles R. Boning.  It should be useful since your climate is probably close to Florida's.  It gives an idea of which trees grow in this area how much care each type of fruit tree needs, how much fruit they produce, etc.  Some trees are desideous (leaves drop off) in winter; you may wish to plant those in the back of your yard, so you don't see them.  You can find the book on www.amazon.com

Welcome Tony. USDA zones do go above 11. Go to this map and click on Puerto Rico or Hawaii for a look at zones up to 13b. 11b would be about right for you.

Ok, thanks. According to that map i'm 13a zone because we almost never drop below 60F.

I do recommend that you get the Florida's Best Fruiting Plant book. You can grow all of the fruits within the book. I am currently growing and caring for most of the trees that are in that book. I recommend that you go to youtube and search for Dr. Richard Campbell and also google fruitscape. There is a UF program that have great educational videos that will be of great use. I am in Grand Bahama and if it can work here it can grow in Nassau and most of the other Family Islands here  at home.
