Help with green scales on guava trees
« on: December 13, 2016, 05:22:30 PM »
The back of my guava leaves are covered with these green squishy things (scales?) all over. Please help me with what to use to get rid of them!

Thanks

I'd be interested in solutions for removing this pest as well.  I've found a few on my Jackfruit and they took a toll on an Abiu I eventually had to dispose of.  I believe they're Croton scales.

Thanks Skhan! Why wasn't your caimito looking well? Because of the green scales?  You got rid of the scales after taking Cookie Monsters advice and applying sulfur?

I think the reasons why my caimito wasn't healthy was mainly due to soil conditions.
I live on limestone heavy soil and Caimito likes it more acidic.

1. What I did was pulled back some of the top soil (being gentle to not disturb the surface roots)
2. Replace it with peat moss
3. Added sand on top of the peat moss (my logic was to try to direct water into the peat moss)
4. Throw a good bit of sulfur, 2-3 cups. (i only had micronized sulfur at the time)
5. Covered it all up with a thick layer of mulch.

The result were night and day.

Scale just seemed to attach whenever but will a healthier tree it rebounds faster.

So the sulfur made the soil more acidic so Caimito recovered and started thriving therefore scales were eliminated naturally by the strong and healthy plant? Or sulfur undermined the growth of scales directly as it was absorbed by the plant into its body through the roots? Could you please clarify it a little bit? I am bit confused... :)

 Thank you!

No correlation between the two.
The soil treatment was only to make the tree healthier general. Did that way before It got scale.
