Marula / Sclerocarya Birrea fruiting...
« on: June 08, 2012, 09:33:09 AM »
My second marula (Sclerocarya birrea), planted outside, bloomed for the first time this spring.
It was a pleasant surprise, because (1) the tree turned out to be female and
 (2) the blooms overlapped the male blooms of my second tree.

Three weeks later, the female flowers look this...

No fruit set problems with this species, apparently...

Que maravilha! Parabéns Sérgio! 8)

How long did the trees take to produce?

Thanks for sharing ;)

I tried 3x and could never get the marula seeds to germinate.  :'( :'(  Oh well, probably too wet for them here anyway. I doubt they would fruit in our rainforest.

Hi Oscar,
Next time you get them seeds...you should use sandpaper to sand the sockets. They should germinate in about 2 weeks. and can be kept viable up to 3 years.

Marula is a very adaptible tree. I reckon the tree will produce very well in Hawaii ;)

 Hi Steven,

I am not sure when I got the seeds, but it was several years ago.
These plants spent a long while in small pots before I planted them in the ground. They
would have bloomed sooner, otherwise. Marulas, are very fast growers with enough heat.

 Oscar,

Marulas do well with lots of water, but that might prevent them from going dormant, and then blooming.
Here, winter cold makes them deciduous, rather than drought.

Steven, yeah i learned about all the germination tricks, but only too late. We have marula trees at our local experimental station and as far as i know they've never fruited, so don't think they're so adaptable to rainforest climate.

Hi Sergio,
If I remember correctly...I have read once that a person planted the seeds, after 6 months nothing happened. So, the person threw them out :o Guess what happened?...they started to germinate ;D ;D ;D

It's really great to know that Marula grows very well in Algarve 8)

Hi Oscar,
I checked out Big Island with google earth and saw that some part of the island have kind of a ''savanna'' type landscape. I bet marula would fruit in these locations with no problems.

Yes we have a wet windward side, the east, and a very dry leeward side, west. You are right, they would do well on dry side, but i don't live there! You're talking about a 3 hour drive one way!

Hi Oscar,
Despite your climate having the rain well distributed throughout the year... You should consider giving Marula a chance ;)  They are one of the best tasting fruits in South Africa...my humble opinion :) I miss them very much :(
