hahaha,

I used to be growing it...now you are!

I got that seed from FLgreenman (he got it from PR...which is where you will probably have to get a scion from one day....so you can have both male and female on the same tree).

It think that tree is almost 2-3yrs old?  It almost died with the low temps in my greenhouse (35F)...but it lost all its leaves and came right back.

Man that's a tree that has traveled and seen the sights. Thats cool it can stand down to 35F with just some minor foliage burn, I think this is going to grow just fine here  ;D

I put it in the 20 gallon root pruner pot until after winter where it will go into a 45 gallon pot and then hopefully if the arctic melts fast enough i could plant it in the ground in about 2 years.

I think im going to get some plants from fruitlovers instead of grafting to make sure i have spares but either way i LOVE the way this tree looks, it has to have one of the most exotic tropical foliage looks. so cool.

it's going to love that new pot.

it's been horribly root bound for the past year.

It actually lost a bunch of leaves last summer because it dried out!  then it bounced back from that too.

but don't be fooled..that damn tree is super sensitive to cold temps...I bet 35F could easily kill it, if exposure is prolonged.

make sure to protect it as long as possible..honestly i wouldn't ever plant it out...i would keep hacking it back, and keep it in a big pot..and try to graft on some scions ASAP!!

either way, I'm glad you wanted the tree!  it's too tall, and too cold sensitive for me to grow!  I've got too many irons on the fire now! I'm limiting my collection for sure.

Yea i hear you, dont worry this thing is going to be cherished ;D I gave it some nice ocean forest soil with peat moss, compost and manure, should take off.

I know what you mean about limiting your collection, you have many pots in pots, its amazing how much you have growing and all doing great. Dont worry tho I have everything else growing here so you'll still get to grub out on all the different fruits from the plants I got from you and more when their ready  8)

I have fruiting trees. You should plant minimum 3, better 4, to insure cross pollination. Grafting is tricky due to hollow core, just like papaya or cecropia. Like cecropia they don't take much room as they tend to grow straight up. Just suggest keeping them topped early on. Otherwise they get so very tall you will never be able to reach the fruits.

Yes. Once it gets to some size there is not just one top. It branches out.

Ya Billy Whitman did it...it's in his book 5 decades...but not many people have fruited them...it's a real challenge

I'm surprised it is so cold sensitive -- I thought it is sometimes grown even at relatively high altitudes in Colombia and elsewhere in the region.  Are there big differences between cultivars / subspecies that might explain that?

Here it is a very fast grower and a seedling can fruit in 3 years.
Don't know about cold hardiness.
I've been through a few generations with these and it seems that, at the moment, I am getting fruit set on all 3 trees that I have.  Before, I always had at least 1 male.  About 3 years ago I planted 3 new trees to add to what I had left which was 1 male and 1 female.  The male died,(these trees don't last so long), and something happened to one of the newly planted trees.  As far as I can tell I now have 3 tree grapes producing fruit and none not producing.

I've never grafted anything like this.  I would think you need to plant more seedlings.

Its hanging in there. I had it on my patio during winter to block the wind but it took 39F well, just lost its leaves. New leaves came out last month but since it was in my patio mold started to grow under the leaves, so i moved it in 60% sun which cooked the leaves and the mold, now i moved it in mostly shade and new growth is emerging now. It doesn't like the root pruning pot also and the soil dries out too fast so i have to soak it every other day, Im going to put it in another regular pot soon but its on my long list of things to transplant under the not as urgent list. I actually might end up planting it in the ground just because it looks cool and i could keep it just as protected, just need to get a hold of a couple more so i can get fruit.

Thanks for sharing your experience with us. Both of you (Oscar & you) are correct.

"The tree is propagate by seed." ... "To date, no reports of vegetative
propagation have been published. The extremely light wood is
almost herbaceous and often hollow in seedlings hindering all
cutting and grafting methods. Air layering may be possible, but is
probably not economical given the low value of the fruit."

Thanks for your input.

It seems this tree is not as heat tolerant as I hoped. I was thinking to buy seeds from Oscar and I beleive I should try to grow it in here since we don't get frost. However, the summer heat might be a challenge for me.

Good luck with your tree. I hope you succeed.

Hi,

This tree also does not like strong wind and cold, it burns the tip of the leaves.
Here it grows the rate of almost 2 m per year, does not like compost, manure and I use only enough water
