Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Is Pungara dioecious?

https://tropical.theferns.info/viewtropical.php?id=Garcinia+macrophylla

A dioecious species, both male and female forms usually need to be grown if fruit and seed are required[336
]. At least some dioecious Garcinia species, however, are able to produce fertile seed even in the absence of fertilization (asexual reproduction). Such seeds would be expected to be genetically identical to the parent[1798
]

Inaccurate information. Have a lone fruiting tree here and have harvested and sprouted seed from another lone tree that used to be at Naples Botanical Garden (sourced from Jim West) before hurricane Irma killed it.

No. It can make fruit on its own. It's Garcinia macrophylla.

While hauling all the trees into the greenhouse for the winter I noticed two fruitlets on one, a lemon drop / garcinia intermedia.  I never noticed the flowers, all my garcinias are crammed together in a blob underneath larger trees.  The tree is about 5ft tall not including the container, and not all that bushy.  I expected it would need to grow a bit more before setting fruit.

I hope it reaches maturity, I have been looking forward to trying the non-mangostana garcinias.

Sorry for the bad pictures, today is a long busy day.

I have seen intermedia seedlings fruit at 3ft tall..! Dont be too discouraged if the fruit is a little smaller than usual (intermedia is small enough as it is). Usually the first fruits on garcinia species are not a good representation. Takes a couple years for them to start pumping out normal fruit. Still cool in Pennsylvania!

Never had this problem when picked at proper time. Best guess is it has something to do with all that fruit banging around in that shipping box. The fruit look bruised and the latex is like a defense mechanism. Especially if the latex was in the fruit flesh itself. At least you have a bunch of seeds.

That's awesome. Don't cut it open too soon.

It does look like Cac.

I ordered a plant off ebay from some far away land one time.  A few weeks went by after I got it.  Then an officer from the USDA showed up at my house to confiscate it!

I would have told him it arrived dead and to go check the local dump if he really wanted to find it.

Also agree with others that there are better options to receive a healthier plant although they may not be grafted. Sellers in Hawaii and Puerto Rico (or possibly a grower in Florida who is willing) will be your best options.

They'll put out stunted leaves like that while they struggle their way to the grave. You'll know if it has recovered if it looks good after a year. Good luck!

Great job. Not ready. Give it more time on the tree.

Slow death incoming. As tropicalfruithunter said, I'd be giving that thing some major TLC for a good year. The good thing is it's grafted so if you can manage to get it back in good health you'll likely get fruit much sooner than from seed.

No chance of achachairu reaching fruiting size in Northern California without serious protection. Not even in the best microclimate.

I ate a "Birula" from shot's tree today (thanks!!)

Big fruit, very sweet, nice flavor and not many seeds. Took a photo before devouring it.

Hope yall got some good rain and not much damage to property/trees. Nobody died. You would most likely have to make a very dumb decision to die in a storm like that. Saw alot of people at the beaches were actually enjoying it. The storm predictably died out once it entered cooler waters and had some land interaction near Baja MX. Was pretty tame by the time it entered into CA.

Will be a nice August rain event for Socal. It likely won't even be a weak tropical storm, more likely a disorganized depression. A lawn chair may not even tip over. Tropical storms don't like that cold water and deteriorate rapidly as a result.

Garcinia macrophylla that needed another week or so on the tree

Growing and fruiting them are two different things as they're dioecious. I have one female fruiting on Pine island. They are pretty wimpy but a little bit tougher than purple mangosteen. They won't stand a chance to reach fruiting size in 9b unless protected. However they will fruit at 25gal size so you could bring them inside on the few cold nights.

I liked Casturi. Pretty fibrous, small and has a sort of diesel funk to it but also a sweet passion fruit mango taste.

Hard to pick just 10... so I'll pick 11.

Sugar loaf
Cotton candy
Fruit punch
Pina colada
Orange essence
Guava (Sein ta lone)
Lemon Zest
Lemon meringue (pu pyu kalay)
Super Julie
Sweet tart
Orange sherbet

Good stuff.

It is funny how we like to set up shop in certain areas and then blame issues on oil.

"I live in a desert city and am concerned about water needs. Where is my rain??? Must be all these darn gas guzzlers."

"I own a condo on the shore and we just received a 100-year storm. Must be them petrol boys."

"Where are all my California Grizzly bears? It couldn't be because people didn't want them around. Must be the same thing that caused that Labor day storm down in Florida! That darn 1760 industrial revolution."

I will admit that I also love a good battery tool.

I'm actually very interested in Pine Island. Seems like an acre there goes for about 100k. My parents think it's a good place too also. Can always build later.
I'll report back in several months...maybe something can happen! Hope to stop by the island when I'll be down.

Try to find land on the island ridge. It's high enough to be out of the flood zone. Just look for zone X on any potential land purchase.

If we're going to have hammerhead sharks breeding in our backyards it would be appreciated if you didn't delete your large science-based rebuttal. Please re-type it and at least PM it to anybody you assume to be a flat-earther here.

More on-topic: I'd like to hear an update at some point on if/how the drainage issue gets resolved. Drains can get clogged and it could be a while before they fix it unless it's brought to their attention.

23
Cherapu germination rate is good as long as seed is fresh. Not as good when they're not fresh.

You'd figure a bunch of misplaced tropical fruit growers would be excited about global warming

Careful now! The "Snow is a thing of the past" and "Children just won't know what snow is" predictions were quickly shot down by reality so they've gone from instilling fear of Global warming to instilling fear of Climate change.

More clogged storm drain threads please!

If you want good coconut production you'll want to be further south. And yes generally closer to the coast is better.
