Garcinia Intermedia experiences
« on: August 19, 2020, 11:06:13 PM »

Im on the edge about buying a garcinia intermedia since i dont know much about it. Any experiences growing this plant?  Im concerned about full sun exposure and if the tree is self fertile. Also any experiences trying the fruit?

Thanks, William

The fruits have a large seed. I prefer the taste of bacupari over lemon drop mangosteen. Not much pulp to eat in my experience. I have a tree in a 7 gal. that is really slow growing, but it is in the wrong growing conditions. Where you live, it should grow fast.

Shade is the way to go with garcinias in general.  The tree is also self fertile, so no need to worry about that. If you ask me I say get it if you can provide the proper growing conditions.

Grows with little to no care and gives a lot of fruit production. Full sun trees will give more production than shaded trees will. Fruits at a small size and age compared to most Garcinia species. Very small fruit with mostly seed but decent flavor. On the smaller end of the tree size spectrum of Garcinia species as well. At least in your lifetime!

Also it doesn’t take up much space.

Thanks all for all the feedback, i don’t have too much space left in my property so i try to grow only the best tasting fruit i can get my hands on. I was also unsure about getting the g. intermedia because i have a couple Achacha trees and i’ve heard they have a similar flavor note, but i cant confirm that statement.

Thanks, William

Achachairu is the superior fruit in every way, although the tree is much larger than G.intermedia

I’ve heard Achacha is more of medium sized tree, as g. Intermedia is more like a big bush. Is that assumption accurate?

Branches of achachariu can reach 6-7m on my farm.  Lemon drop is about 4m wide overall.

G. brasiliensis, gardneriana and intermedia are pretty similar being smallish trees with round fruit from southern south America. I am a fan of that cluster of species from northern or N/W south America loosely called madronos (not just G.madruno). There are several smooth, 2 or 3 fuzzy skinned and a number which appear to be undescribed which Jim West and others have offered names for.

I ate these G.macrophylla the weekend and they were really good. The tree gets big however.
