Citrus General Discussion / What is eating my trees?
« on: May 21, 2019, 01:31:48 PM »
I found this damage today while out looking at my trees.  This is a Flame grapefruit tree, surrounded by several other trees.  Last week I found the same type of damage to a whole table full of Meyer lemon trees I have in pots.  There are no leaves on the ground, and no stems left behind. Whatever it is does not seem to be interested in the fruit.   I looked for deer tracks, and there were none.  What kind of critter is eating my trees?

Citrus General Discussion / US852
« on: April 26, 2019, 06:45:49 PM »
Anyone growing citrus on US852 rootstock ?  I have two of my 50 or so trees on it, and they are my best looking and largest trees.  I would like other growers observations and thoughts about this rootstock.  You can barely tell where the graft is on these trees, unlike my trees on Rubidoux, where the scion is larger than the rootstock.

Temperate Fruit Discussion / Best Persimmon tree to buy
« on: December 04, 2018, 09:45:24 AM »
Hi, all.  I am planning on planting a Asian persimmon this winter.  I am looking at Fuyu types, but am confused.  I want a large flavorful fruit that in non astringent.  Upon reading descriptions, it depends on where you read as to which is best  I was thinking about getting the Hana Fuyu.   I have only tasted Fuyu. Do any of you have a favorite?  Please help me decide, I need to get my order in.

Thanks,

Citrus General Discussion / Late blooming citrus
« on: October 19, 2018, 10:45:28 PM »
A few weeks ago my little Changshou/Fukushu kumquat bloomed profusely. One of my Kishu mandarins keeps throwing out sporadic blooms and all three Dekopon mandarins keep blooming.  Now my two year old NZ Lemonade tree is starting to bloom in mid October. Is there a trick to train these things to bloom at the proper times?  At least my Meyer lemon trees are holding off for now.

Citrus General Discussion / Sneaky Lemon
« on: August 22, 2018, 06:20:12 PM »
I thought that I had removed all the little fruitlets off of my UGA Grand Frost tree this past spring. I found this one later, hiding under some low hanging leaves. When I first found it, it was the size of a golf ball, so I decided to leave it. Now it is bigger than a softball.

Citrus General Discussion / Scarring on fruit
« on: August 11, 2018, 10:36:03 PM »
I found this on one of my Okitsu Wase fruit today. This is the only fruit on the tree like this. None of my other trees have any like this either.

Any ideas?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / My first mango tree
« on: August 06, 2018, 07:21:16 PM »
Ok..I bought a Glenn mango tree. I'm starting off small. Glenn is supposed to be pretty much trouble free from what I have read. It will have to stay in a container, so I need to keep it fairly small.  My question is whether to prune it back below the ring of buds now, after it's first flush, or wait for it to finish hardening off? If I cut it just below the ring of buds, it will be 30 inches tall. Should I wait and prune after next flush. Any help will be appreciated.

Citrus General Discussion / Natural pest control
« on: July 28, 2018, 09:12:28 AM »

Second batch of bug eaters from this nest this year. Almost any time of day I can see dozens of "my babies" working hard to keep the bug population down. I think they are barn swallows, but I am not a birdologist..Lol  Go babies go!!!

Tropical Vegetables and Other Edibles / Moringa oleifera
« on: July 25, 2018, 05:59:50 PM »
Anyone else growing Moringa oleifera in zone 8a. I do not get to harvest the "beans", but I do get a lot of growth each year from a single planting 3 years ago. They grow fast. They grow and bloom, but not enough time for the beans to grow. I use the leaves to eat, make tea, and plan on using some for compost tea for plants.

Citrus General Discussion / Sticky Millet
« on: July 22, 2018, 11:28:44 AM »
Boy I bet that subject line gets a lot of attention. Lol.  My question is.. Since I and many others rely on Millet's experience and knowledge on growing citrus trees, is there any way we can get a "Sticky" put up that explains the proper fertilizing regime for citrus trees at different ages, including the use of low biuret urea foliar spray for fruit holding and sizing? It would be nice to have everything in one place to look back on to remind us when and how to grow citrus. Maybe even include proven methods of pest control, both chemical and organic. This may be a way to keep Millet from having to answer the same question repeatedly, and have more time for us to pick his brain on other issues.

Citrus General Discussion / Cultivar list
« on: July 13, 2018, 10:25:42 PM »
Board seems slow, so I thought I would make a list of the citrus trees I have, and maybe you could tell me which ones I should think about getting rid of or which ones you think I should add. I need cold hardiness and early ripening. I have only tasted a few of these cultivars.

Citrus General Discussion / Still blooming
« on: July 12, 2018, 06:51:28 PM »
I have one dekopon that is still throwing out blooms, even though it has fruit over golf ball size.  One kishu has put one one bloom, not yet open. I guess this is normal for young trees. This is the third time the dekopon has bloomed this year.

Citrus General Discussion / Snails
« on: July 06, 2018, 11:51:59 AM »
I have seen and removed many, many small snails from my citrus trees this year, but I have seen no damage in the area where they where removed from. Do some snails clean leaves? Can they be beneficial?  Do we any snailologists on here? Lol

Citrus General Discussion / Large leaves
« on: July 01, 2018, 01:22:44 PM »
Is the copious amount of rain and very few sunny days the reason for all the extra large leaves on a lot of my citrus trees? They are in ground and get around 8 hours of sun a day ( when it shines).

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Large leaves
« on: June 30, 2018, 10:21:48 AM »
I have been growing citrus in the ground for three years. They do get some damage in winter, but usually just a little leaf drop or damage to unhardened branches. This year I have noticed many more large leaves and I guess you would call them water suckers. We have had copious amounts of rain and many cloudy days this spring, and was wondering if this is the reason for it. Maybe the tree needs to use up the excess water from the soil. They get at least 8 hours of sun (when it shines). The leaves are large, dark green and beautiful to look at.  This is occurring on several of my trees. Is my thinking way out of line, and if so is there anything I need to do?

Thanks,
TFN

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Rapoza Mango
« on: June 21, 2018, 11:47:24 AM »
Anyone know of a online source for Rapoza Mango tree? I've heard they are the same as Florida Red Mango, but all searches for "Florida Red" mango have come up empty.

Citrus General Discussion / Bug ID
« on: June 06, 2018, 07:27:17 PM »
I had some late blooming citrus trees this year. One several of the blooms, I noticed they had a dark inner circle next to the developing fruitlet. Upon closer inspection, I found that it was several insects (bugs) with their head at the bottom of the fruitlet and their tails pointing outward along with the petals. They looked like part of the flower.  I've done many google searches but have not found anything that looks like them. I did not think to take pictures.  Now I notice darkening around the bottom of the fruit, after bloom fall. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Could someone please explain the difference between Owari, Frost Owari, and Silverhill satsuma trees?

I have a question about pruning citrus trees after the initial pruning of damaged wood. I have several freeze damaged trees, with varying degrees of damage, but my Moro tree has starting flushing and growing limbs at every node. Should I trim off half or most of the limbs so that it is not sooo bushy? I wouldn't want people to think I have a ChiaPet in my yard. Any advice would be greatly appreciated.

Citrus General Discussion / Best rootstock for Kishu mandarin
« on: March 20, 2018, 05:05:36 PM »
I would like to call on the wisdom and experience of this forum to help me choose best rootstock for Kishu Mandarin. I am looking for cold hardiness ( zone 8), quality, and production. I have well draining sandy loam soil in west central Ga....on the fall line. I have protection measures in place for winter. I am fairly new at this, but have made several successful grafts, though I hear Kishu is very hard to get to take. I have Kinkoji, Trifoliata, Flying dragon, Swingle and US852 rootstock to choose from. Any suggestions?
