Tropical Fruit Discussion / Mangoes with ingrown hairs?
« on: August 18, 2014, 10:48:44 AM »
Hi,

A friend of mine gave me a bunch of mangoes and all of them have 2 interesting characteristics. One is that the seed is invariably cracked open within the fruit, and the other is that they all have these "hairs" which look like ingrown hairs. It looks as if though the seeds had started to germinate within the fruit, those hairs being the start of the roots. This may or may not be unusual, but I don't remember seeing it on mangoes before...

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Grosella leaves getting chewed up...
« on: May 06, 2014, 02:05:22 PM »
Hi,

Does anyone have experience with grosellas, phyllanthus acidus, and know why my plant's leaves look so awful? It seems that every time a new flush comes out, something attacks it, it loses its leaves and new growth comes out. Then the whole cycle repeats itself.

Any ideas on what i can spray it with would be helpful.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Chloritic Grumi
« on: May 06, 2014, 02:01:30 PM »
My grumichama has looked chloritic for about a year now, although I've fertilized it with 8-3-9 and iron supplements. It is in a partly sunny location, about 20% sun.

Any ideas on why it is in a perpetual chloritic condition?

I see this holey damage on a lot of the leaves on my Barbados Cherry and flowers. Any clues as to what type of insects does this sort of damage?

I've checked at PIn but they seem to be out of these at the moment.

Mine died last year probably due to planting in the shade.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Barbados Cherry not fruiting anymore!
« on: July 26, 2013, 02:12:14 PM »
My Barbados Cherry would give me loads of fruit when I first got it about 4 years ago but since last year it has barely given 1 or 2 cherries. I fertilize it every 2 months or so with 8-3-9, and it doesn't seem to have any diseases, leaf color looks good, in full sun, gets watered weekly, etc.

Has anyone else experienced this and, more importantly, have a solution to get it to start fruiting again?

I really don't like it when one of my fruiting trees fails to fruit in its season. That's what happened with my cherry of the rio grande this year. I'd like to blame the late cold front that we had this year, maybe it messed up the fruiting window since it came in early March. Or it may be because i fertilized it with some potassium sulfate soon after that to try to encourage it to flower.

Did anyone else's CORG not fruit this year?

Any advice or comments would be appreciated.

This is one of 2 plants that are still unidentified.

It appears to be beginning to flower!

Any help would be appreciated.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Would these make decent fruit bags?
« on: April 22, 2013, 05:12:38 PM »
Just ran across this site and noticed that they sell cloth bags. I think they would make decent fruit bags (for protecting against insect damage and sun exposure) since they are cotton material and white to keep the fruit cooler. And they have drawstrings which would make it easier to open and close to check up on the fruit.

I guess I'm looking for either confirmation that they would make decent fruit bags or reasons why they wouldn't.

Link to different bag options:
http://www.uline.com/Grp_209/Cloth-Bags

I think these would work fine:
http://www.uline.com/BL_202/Cloth-Parts-Bags

I would also consider a group order as 200 is the minimum order.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Is the Gold Nugget Loquat variety bland???
« on: March 28, 2013, 03:34:55 PM »
I tasted the first fruit off my Gold Nugget Loquat and it wasn't sweet at all. I tried yellow, orange and orange shriveled ones to make sure I ate them when they were ripe, but the taste was always bland, not sweet, and boring.

has anyone else experienced this or know what might be causing it? this is the tree's first fruiting.

thanks,
Jaime

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Source for Camu Camu seeds?
« on: February 28, 2013, 12:50:55 AM »
Hi,

Does anyone have a good source for Camu Camu seeds?

Can anyone describe the flavor of the fruit?

Thanks,
Jaime

I am looking to buy some Myrica Rubra seeds and stumbled upon this site:

http://www.richfarmgarden.com/myrica.html

Has anyone ever heard of it or bought from them before?

Prices at the bottom for the Chinese bayberry seem reasonably priced. I'll wait to hear from others and if positive would consider placing a group order from them.

Thanks,
Jaime

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Upcoming March events at UM's Gifford Arboretum
« on: February 26, 2013, 07:13:52 PM »
Passing this on from Stephen D. Pearson, Director of the Gifford Arboretum at UM.

Dear Friends of the Arboretum,

I hope you will join us for the following March events:

Saturday, March 2, 2013
I will lead a walking tour of the Maya Cocoa Garden Exhibit of the Gifford Arboretum this Saturday at 9:00 AM. The Mayans were a very interesting culture that was very advanced in certain respects. Come learn about some of the plants that were important to these people, including the sources of chocolate, chewing gum and kapok. We will meet by the semi-circle stone benches and the tour should last about an hour and a half. I will also be happy to look at and discuss other parts of the Arboretum after the initial tour is finished.

Thursday, March 7, 2013
Dr. Chad Husby of Montgomery Botanical Center will present "The Garden Primeval: Ancient Plant Forms in Nature and Cultivation." Dr. Husby is an expert on tropical gymnosperms and this presentation will be of interest not only to plant lovers, but also to anyone interested in evolution and the history of plant life. As always at our monthly meetings, contributions to our snack table are encouraged but not required. The meeting will take place at 7:00 PM in Cox Science Center Room 166. A poster is attached so please post it or share it with others who would be interested in attending.

Watermelon patch

Excellent, but tiny, plums

Does anyone know if there are cool fruit-related places to visit in San Antonio, and/or people to meet there?

I'll be going there later this week and may have a little extra time to check these out.

Thanks,
Jaime
