I have a very healthy Oro Negro tree with fruit that matures about 2-3 mos. after S. Florida.  Some is falling off suggesting it's mature.  Seed is either not sprouting inside or has a very short radical emerging, a good thing.  Skin color is either a dark purple or black.  Texture is excellent (makes good guacamole') but my problem with this fruit is it's bland, lacking in character and low in oil, probably the W. Indies working here.  :(  Am about to top work it to one of my better trees.  Not really concerned about productivity.

Any one like this fruit?

Home grown and for you folks in cold climes I have a HUGE bed of wonderful volunteer cilantro which made it thru a few hours of 14F and below 20F for hours.

While there are some I have seen who say they like it, I have not been a fan of it.  It has some similar characteristics of its parent, Monroe, which is not a favorite of mine either.

Even looks like the Monroe and has that huge W. Indies seed.   If the rest of this year's fruit tastes like the first couple have it's gonna get the ol Whackamole'.  Oro Negro was pushed by PIN and Brogdon which I also didn't like.  The Waldin/Brogdon has made an incredible rootstock for 6 scions of some of the best - Ardith, Pinkerton, Holiday and Sir Prize.

Terroir definition:  "the complete natural environment in which a particular wine is produced, including factors such as the soil, topography, and climate"  Here I add: Tree owner.

In my grove ON does well, high oil, creamy. Now, I particularly don't like the taste but my wife loves it, so do a lot of my friends.

This is a bummer to hear! My O.N. hasn't produced fruit yet but do believe like Carlos, that different soil's and climatic conditions have different affect's on fruit. Agree with Ed, I had six big Holiday's on my tree last year and they were excellent ;)

Is the Holiday a tree that you've planted at your new home?  Where did you purchase it?

That along with people's tastes are subjective,  with fruit and wine.  As I said, I dont like Carrie mango, Valencia Pride,  Monroe, etc. and others do...

Catalina is a mid season that is creamy tasty, loved by Cubans, and great to eat with salt or in guac.

Day is early, firmer, great nutty taste.

Pollock and Simmo ds are excellent early season that are greamy with full flavor and fat.

Wurtz is  very Hass like for us in Florida.

Lula is a very late season, high oil, semi creamy with a hint of sweetness.

For me Catalina and Oro Negro has that taste.

Pollock even thought is a low oil fruit is excellent, one of my favorite, the tree produces little but I have two trees for home. A late Simonds is also good. Not creamy but tasty "to me".  Oil and taste are not related.

Check my work on dry weight easy to do it at home.

While testing the actual fruit for numerical values is all well and good (whether be for oul in cadis, testing brix or even scoville units) but people bodies do not react or always agree with the testing equipment.   I have had mangoes and cherimoyas that have had lower briz readings but tasted way sweeter than those with higher readings.  Same gies for avocados with oil/fat.  People's interpretation and reaction to being creamy can vary.

Most likely it's not getting the year long heat it requires and full sun.  I have 2 Holiday scions going nuts on a young 4 variety Frankencado which is loaded with blooms on all new grafted scions.  Will drop the fruit this first year.

I had the same experience bland below average cado. I had a small tree that I remove I actually like Monroe better.

Amazing.  Carlos sent me some Catalina and Monroe.  We liked them both.  Perhaps my ON is a bit young.  A fruit's quality tends to improve with age, just like better wines made from older grapevines.  Speaking of terroir.....Mouvedre at my vineyard.  I sell to amateur winemakers and get the benny of having my own grapes come back to me in a bottle from my customers.  ;)  Just got a dry Madeira made from a blend of my Vermentino and Viognier grapes.

No, Day and Holiday are not the same.  Day does well here, but I don't know about Holiday in Florida (or even if it's available).

OMG!   Makes me hungry.  Those Pinkertons are beautiful and one of my favorites.  Mine is in bloom.  Needless to say the fruit will be dropped.

I do a mean ceviche with shrimp or fish.

Totally different varieties.  Holiday aka XX# was developed by UCR.  Day is an oldie, a WI X Mex cross and grown here in Texas.  All anecdotal evidence I've read puts Holiday up with the best of the best plus it is a small tree with short internodes.  Carlos has a great ditty (as always) on Holiday.  http://www.myavocadotrees.com/holiday-avocado.html

Pinkerton, Reed, Holiday, etc.  Excellent video! https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=tXpH5Kpzxy8
