Hardiness of Inga Edulis
« on: July 12, 2017, 12:48:55 AM »
I live in zone 9b, scottsdale, AZ.  Winters are pretty mild, but, it seems like most winters get a day or 2 of 28 degree lows.
3 years ago, planted inga edulis in front yard, in a corner, in a very good microclimate.   I coveredon't it with frost cloth on coldest nights.
This year, it has really taken off and will be higher than my roof.  But, it is now well established and had fairly thick trunk.  Will it be okay to go unprotected from now on, or, is there going to be severe die back every winter?

I am in the same zone in Florida, but on the edge of 10a. I always put a thick layer of
mulch around my trees and water heavy on the days there will be a cold night. I just received
I. edulis seeds and I have got 2 other types growing also. I planned to put them on the North
edge of my trees to make a wall to break the cold? How did your tree handle the full sun or did
it get full sun as a small tree?

It was a bit shaded.  Grew into full sun by second year.  Intense desert sun had no effect, even on day it hit 120.  As long as watered out here, it has been a very fast grower.

Are you sure it is Inga edulis? That is one of the most mislabeled trees I have seen. Every Inga tree is generically slapped with the edulis tag it seems. Has it fruited for you? It seems like the most common ones in Florida are I. vera and I. feuillei.

Well, very possible.  The person I bought it from, shamus oleary, is a self professed plant expert.  After purchasing some plants from him, found out his previous job was furniture salesman and my 11 year old probably knows more about plants than him.  He makes to FL, stuffs his truck with plants and brings them back here.  So, he is relying on someone else to tell him what it is, as he has absolutely no idea.
Has not bloomed yet.  Any hinges I can look at to see what variety I may have?

i have what i think is Edulis, at least what i was told in the trade.
Anyway, i am in Zone 9 - New Orleans
In January , we had 1 night that hit 27F. colder than most winters.
it was in a 3gal container, and about 3 to 4ft tall.
it froze down to the roots.

i started seeing new growth in May i think.
i put it in ground in a raised sandy area , it took 2 weeks at most to adjust.
Now, its has really taken off.
i have it planted near a Jujube and a couple of guava, since they provide nitrogen
and i can hopefully prune them and use leaves for mulch.

its in full sun and seems to love it.
i do have a good bit of mulch, and we get a lot of rain here.
actually, we have had 11 inches in a week, and its rained at least 20 of the last 30 days.

My understanding is Inga Feuillei is more hardy by a few degrees.
( i just got a small one)

The Edulis - pic is a couple of weeks old.

I am 99.9% sure these are the real deal Inga edulis. The early growth has this washed out look to it. I have seeds from two different sources and they both look the same. I have seen my friends plant growing from a third source and it also has this same look. I approach grafted an Inga vera rootstock to this one to push it along. The Inga edulis seems to be a weak grower from me. The Inga vera is a beast.

Hmm.... Sounds interesting, can you somehow use this to create a unique design?
