I was finally able to get my hands in a great top tier Olosapo like the one Luc and I tried in Tela Honduras in a corner just outside of a elementary school, what caught our attention was the lovely kids jumping all over the tree trying to get the bright colorful fruits, they were delicious, and what happen is that here in my area there is also all around the river but this ones are smaller don't have the striking colors, got fiber and flavor is just ok, during 10 years after I tried those from Tela I was wondering what happened with the seeds, maybe Luc kept them, never asked, anyway like 4 years ago visiting my inlaws in Tuxpan, Veracruz (gulf of Mexico)
I was looking for a nursery in a long and winding road.... Lol a road out of town with nice country simple houses with fruit trees by the side, we stop to watch a huge Mamey Apple tree when suddenly I look to the other side and there was like an orange carpet on the floor, looking carefully started to see all these intense orange fruits that I recognized inmediately, Bingo! Tela Olosapo came to my mind, went down the car to pick some of the best ones and with no further investigation bite one of them, very, good! Super creamy, very very sweet and taste of mango, orange, egg nog, milk caramel, with a wine after taste, can't complain why a fruit like this is endangered on this days, almost nobody knows it, my wife family didn't know them even the tree is where they live, or is maybe that this fruit is like good cheese or wine that only connoisseurs enjoy them? They have definitely a different flavor with that wine bouquet after taste, something I really enjoy, the seeds I brought that time were dug up by an animal while I was out of town and dried out, now finally this year in Eastern vacations I went back to visiting and find some time to look again for the tree, this time I met the owners who were kind enough to get me couple volunteer seedlings from under the tree, it was full of flowers so I asked for phone number to call in Summer to pick some fruits, now the time has come and my sister in law will come next week with some fruit she already pick today!

Raul could you please describe me the taste of this fruit you have ? Does it have a big seed ? I am asking this question because I have Couepia ruffia whoose pulp is sweet and tastes like garbanzo flour. I also have Couepia bracteosa, fruits are smaller in size (form and size is like that of your Couepia polyandra) outside skin is light grey in colour. Taste of pulp no good.

Hi, I did up there "very, good! Super creamy, very very sweet and taste of mango, orange, egg nog, milk caramel, with a wine after taste" that is what is calling to my memory after 4 years of trying them, I also recall the one in Tela was very good to both Luc and me, funny thing the fruit is call Monquikiac over there, my wife family are the ones who pick the fruits for me they have never tried them and like them, to my mother in law taste like a mix of mango and papaya so funny, their only complain is that the fruit is extremely sweet according to them..

They have a few trees in my area. Usually under the trees there are tons of seedlings so I’m assuming they germinate readily maybe. This is a picture of the tree across my house today.

Are they easy to germinate ? How long do they take ?
I got seeds a few years back, from Luc I think. I did nothing special with the seeds & I believe germination was close to 100%. I don't recall how long they took to germinate but it was not an extremely long time like with some seeds.

Hi DL, the tree is in Tuxpan, Veracruz on the Gulf of Mexico, I'm on the pacific coast, if I get the chance or my inlaws visit again in summer next year there will be chance to get seeds again..

Hi Michael! Hope you are doing fine, is from another source, if you look closely you can see clearly differences in color, shape (mine are more fatty) and mine also have more rough skin, don't know where Luc's come from, mine from a single tree in the middle of nowhere in Tuxpan, Veracruz...

There are no more seeds I bought 800 of them and they are gone, next year they will be more if my inlaws help,
CHRIS- Skin is imperceptible, no flavor, very thin to notice, yes don't need to peel...

Good to know, I hate peeling fruits. Eat almost everything with the skin if edible.
My seeds have just arrived Italy, let's hope they pass the customs or I'll have to wait next year!

I collected seeds from olosapo tree at Fruit and Spice park in Homestead many years ago. Don't know if it's still there? Found those fruits to be fibrous and not such good quality. I'm sure the seeds from Raul are better.

I've had one in ground since early 2016. It was a bit over two feet tall when I got it, and after an impressive initial growth spurt it's grown less than six inches in the nearly four years since then. So at around 3 feet tall, I expect my grandchildren (as yet unborn) may get to see fruit from it.
As far as growing tips go... so far it has never gotten cold enough here in Broward to assess its tolerance for cold, and it has minimal needs for water. I fertilize twice yearly and I have enviably decent sandy / loamy soil for south Florida so I can't comment on how well it does in sand or shell rocky type soils.
I've read they fruit fast... 6 years? I wish. If it were true, mine had better get going as it's likely well over 6 years old already :-)

Same here. I thought it wasn't growing because they were stressed out by cold but seem not much different in a hotter climate.
I think mine did make 1 cm the whole summer(which is probably the only season it will grow)....
They only grow fast when sprouting from seed.
I think there must be some trick to make them grow faster, maybe they need some different soil?
6 year is probably true in their native environment where I doubt they are still small after 6 years. Will probably take 20 years at our pace if they don't die before(in my case).

I've had mine in the ground for a little over a year in east Miramar. It's definitely not a fast grower, but it's probably pushing 2 - 2.5 feet now. It's in full sun. I water and fertilize it often and it seems to respond well. I'd estimate that I've had 2-3 inches of new growth this year, and leaf size has increased pretty dramatically. It's definitely growing faster than my glacially slow pitangatuba - and certainly faster than any of my garcinias. But it is certainly no speed demon. I'm hoping for fruit within my lifetime :-)

Live long and prosper, and it will not be a problem. ;) Throwing them some fert regularly would also help a lot!

Mine is 13 months old. It is 2 feet long growing in a pot of peat plus perlite. I have not given it much fertilizer (maybe 3 applications of diluted NPK?). It is my favorite tree in my collection. Almost died on me 3 months back when the automatic watering system failed. It was a huge scare. Since then it has flushed new growth. May it live long and prosper!
