Tropical Fruit Discussion / Banana Q's
« on: April 10, 2024, 09:43:39 PM »
I have several "dwarf" banana plants and all throw out a flag leaf at around 4'-5' and their leaves are all rather long at ~4'-5'.

One plant sends out a flag leaf with the plant still under 3' in height but the last few leaves before the flag are stunted almost as small as the flag leaf itself. Weird.

Is this one be some cultivar other than what I "think" I have, those being dwarf mysore and dwarf cavendish. Is there another named cultivar that fits this one's growth habit?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / pink banana (musa veluntina)
« on: April 09, 2024, 07:01:16 AM »
I have tried growing these before by trying to start from five seeds I bought, none germinated. So I'm now awaiting 20 more seeds and I am going to give them another try.

Does anyone have experience growing these? Can you give and advice on how to get best germination rate and methods to plant them in favorable soil get them to bear fruit?

PS. I have a number of true dwarf banana plants and have had great success with them.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / More Parafilm Q's
« on: April 04, 2024, 08:57:29 PM »
I just got a batch of parafilm to replace some that dried out in my shed.

Question, how do I store it so it doesn't dry out and crack? Seal in plastic in the dark?

How long should Parafilm be usable given it's stored properly?

Well it was more than the tree could hold and the massive amount of new growth along with a large crop of fruit, a huge chunk of my mulberry tree broke off. I spent the better part of a day chopping it up holding larger branches to cut into pieces less than 5" around for feeding my firepit next year.

I left an enormous pile of branches for the trash guys but they were gone in an hour and it was not a trash day, it seems my neighbor took it for wood to smoke meats.

Gads the wood oozes so much latex I'd have thought that it would make meat taste like a surgeon's glove :-) After reading that many use seasoned mulberry with the dried bark as a smoke wood I still have reservations on smoking food with it. To that end I started skinning / bark removing a bunch of them to try smoking meat with.

My questions are...

Does anyone here use mulberry in their smoker?

If so do you use it with or without the bark?

If so have you tried it with and without the bark and do you notice a flavor difference in the meat??

Also I buy a truckload of "Australian pine" for the firepit. The seller says it's a HARD wood (proven by my giving up trying to chop it) and makes delightful smoke wood.

Any comments on Australian pine as a smoke wood?

Mine are dark red also, but the seed is pretty large.

I hate that tree. :-)

Gadzooks, I'm a good 30 miles north of you, kudos to you for being a determined fruit nut! :-)

Even from most of Florida they're just not worth the L-O-N-G drive. I wish they would sell on Ebay.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Hunt for the best Surinam Cherry
« on: March 27, 2024, 09:39:07 AM »
I personally can't stand them and I'd have rather eaten a few puke flavored papaya. That was BEFORE my neighbor grabbed a few deep black samples from his yard and asked me to try them. I gotta say at least from HIS bush, I'd rather eat his Surinam cherry than a puke  flavored papaya :-)

It's not saying much but the possibility of a dessert Surinam is still a dim possibility.

Gary, my wife discovered a papaya that doesn't taste pukey; like you, she doesn't appreciate strong papaya flavor, so she kept propagating this one that has less sweetness but definitive floral fragrance, fresh "clean" taste, almost like a honeydew. I like very sweet (don't mind musky) papayas and don't care for "her" variety but she really loves it. Next time we see each other I can share seeds if you want.

Thx, I would appreciate it.

I have grown several that were quite good but the plant is short lived and my limited experience with them is the seeds from their fruit has been variable as to flavor.

I'm always willing to try again

My GF has lots of orchids in her north facing patio and I have scads of them in my yard. In both locations they get lots of filtered light.

If you mean by "low maintenance" complete neglect, orchids are not gonna happen unless they're are outdoors.

A few years ago I went up to central Florida and stopped at a couple of abandoned citrus farms that were clearly in decline. Neither seemed to be over run with weeds or vines but a good half of the trees were dead or dying possibly due to lack of watering, fertilization, or the effect of cold snaps. The fruit on them was very good.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Rollinia - To Prune or Not to Prune
« on: March 24, 2024, 05:55:46 AM »
Since the thread started and now has been resurrected my Rollinia has had a few years growth I can state my observations...

I tip prune mine from top to bottom but I let it get a bit taller than wider so I can walk under it and right now it is at ~12' tall, and the overall shape looks "correct". It flowers well and I get what I consider a fair amount of fruit without hand pollination for a young tree that's been in ground four years.

If I live to see it decline, I'll have another few started from the fruit seeds to replace it.

My Makok doesn't get as much sun as it would like so it's not heavy with fruit due to its less sunny location, but it's pretty much ever bearing.

17
Funny, I must be cursed.

I bought one that was nearly 8' tall and put it in ground maybe 18+ months ago it's very healthy but no blooms. The second one I got is nearly 5' tall in ground and same thing. Grrr...  >:(

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Whats the "biggest" mango
« on: March 21, 2024, 12:11:49 AM »
The biggest I know of is the LANCETILLA. I've had some go 4+ pounds and I've heard of larger.

I was at a flea market last weekend and a grower had a little guava with a half dozen fruits on it?

My red is in the ground and is in a shaded spot. It started producing nice and sweet fruit, though the seed is larger than my Sabara which I prefer.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: So much for chilling hours
« on: March 19, 2024, 11:16:27 PM »
Oddly enough, while we have had no severe cold, it has been chilly all winter--which is what lychee needs.

About what temperature is the threshold between chilly and severe cold? I planted a lychee last summer.

To me anything staying in the 50's is chilly below the mid 40's is cold.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / So much for chilling hours
« on: March 19, 2024, 07:45:04 PM »
Since 1977 this has been one of the least chilly winters here.

Even so my sweetheart lychee has exploded in blooms, it looks like the top has a chia pet on it.

Bees which have been absent for years are all over the chia :-) I have waited 14 years to see a bloom like this, but since they are so high I'll have to build a scaffold to get them.

Anyone else have a strong lychee bloom going?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Do you leave leaves under trees?

No only do I leave the leaves :-) where they drop, my gF bags huge amounts of leaves from her lawn and I take the home to spread around my yard.

I've watched a number of grafting videos from Asia and many use regular kitchen cling wrap.
