Is it possible to graft atemoya scions onto guanabana rootstock to produce atemoya trees?

Yes , but atemoya takes the cold better than guanabana. So grafting it would make it less cold hardy.

But the (guanabana) roots would be underground and shouldn't be affected by air temperature, I would think.  Unless it were well below freezing.

The graft would not be under ground.

if you want to add some diversity to an established soursop, could be a good idea. might top work mine some.

I am surprised to hear they are compatible and would be even more surprised if those successful grafts didn't show delayed incompatibility. The flowers show they are not that closely related.

Please explain how guanabana is prone to root rot?  I was under the impression they were very flood tolerant and this could be the answer for those trying to grow atemoya in flood prone areas?

We have lost 7 soursops(different years) in the Philippines due to flood for 3 days.

Same as  it goes for sugar apples &papayas. These were mature trees that died.

Ken Love here in Hawai'i has reported success with grafting cherimoya onto guanabana. It was quite some years ago he did the experiments.

Gozp,

That is interesting about losing mature Soursop trees to flooding.

TREC did an experiment with young seedling Soursops in one-gallon containers, which were plunked into 5-gallo0n buckets of water.  The plants seriously wilted, but pretty soon recovered and looked fine for a year in the stagnent water, until the experiment was terminated.
