Some Mangos from Leo Manuels house
« on: December 11, 2014, 05:54:02 PM »
I visited Leo today and he's still got some mangos hanging on his trees. He still has NDM, Keitt, Maha Chanok, #4, Kent and several others. His #4 seedling produces a very large and nicely colored fruit that weighs about 3 pounds approximately. His trees are all in great condition with flowers forming on some varieties.

I left with a couple also #2 and a two pound Keitt. The Leo #2 smells absolutely amazing and it has great color with yellow as the base and a sunset red blush. There are lenticels, otherwise this fruit can be as beautiful as a Maha Chanok ripened in the sun. The Leo #2 is an excellent tasting fruit with high Brix the last time I tested it. These fruit are not ripe yet but I'll get a Brix reading on them when they ripen up.

The large fruit Leo is holding is his #4.

And some fruit I took home

I was amazed the first time I went to Leo's. He has some very nice fruit. Last year his lychee was loaded with fruit. He had some mangoes the size of a football!

Leos lychee trees are huge and he's planted several new plants into the ground.

Anonaddict, Glenn's fruit heavily here in Cali from what I've seen so I think we will be ok. Even if blooms blow or freeze off, they will reflower from my experience. My problem so far has been with an over abundance of bloom and fruit set.

Amazing Simon, what Leo's still got fruiting!
Lucky you...

Now this #4 - the only one I know is the NDM #4.  Is this
one of Leo's seedlings or something else?

And the next question is - how do the ones you took home taste?

Hey Gary, Leo likes to plant seedlings and I believe his #4 is one of his seedlings. His Leo #2 is excellent tasting from the mango tasting at JFs house but I have not cut into these beauties yet. I'm super excited to see how these taste compared to the early ones. I'll update later today, I'm waiting for my daughter to come home from school since she loves mangos:)

I just cut open the Leo#2 and it was soooo sweet. It had a Brix of 21.5% but tasted even sweeter because it lacked a bit of acidity to balance out the sweetness. Both my daughters and my wife loved. I liked it very much but wish it had a bit more acid. This fruit has a small amount of fibers, mostly concentrated around the seed. The flavor is hard to pin but to my palate had hints of Edward with a bit of Vanilla on the back end. Overall a great mango.
