Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Buying from the seedhunters website
« on: June 28, 2022, 06:22:30 AM »
I initially had good experience from him but ordered  seeds last September and still haven't received them and hasn't responded to any correspondence after telling me he'd send them but never happened. It was about $180 of seeds so not very happy. Just a heads up to be cautious.

Hi Marcos,
Do you have a taste report on the araticu? Is the neolaurofolia that you had before or different?
Thanks

3
Hey would you have any pics of the annona urbaniana fruit? Also any description on taste?
Thanks
Joe

He has sent me numerous seeds to Australia and never had a problem with him sending the seeds or the quality. Australian customs destroyed some packages for no reason but most came through. Just recently received some purple ilama seeds frim him, you need to see the fruit! By far the strongest purple on an ilama I've seen

Hi han sen,

coconut cream is a poly from what I can remember last year.
if you don't have one, I certainly recommend it. i do hear the tree is quite finniky

Forgot to mention I may have a coconut cream but I'm a bit sus on the origin of it now and think it may be from a different 'coconut' mango. If I can confirm it hasn't come from coconut cream I'll add that to my list though I have heard the trees are a bit scraggly in growth and possibly poor producers

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Wanted mango seeds
« on: May 25, 2021, 08:27:13 AM »
Hi all,
So last year I posted requesting some seeds of the top mango varieties available in America to be sent to Australia. Had to put everything on hold due to Covid! But now I'm keen to pursue this further and finally knock the Kensington Pride off it's pedestal in Australia.

I have sourced scions of seed grown lemon zest, orange sherbet and sweet tart here in Aus and should be able to taste the fruit within a year or two!

With mango season underway in America I was wanting to add sugarloaf and kryptonite (aka kathy or k3) as I've read they both should produce poly seeds so chances are I can have a clone of the parent. Is anyone willing to help me out here and of course I'll pay for your troubles and also open to suggestions of other poly varities.

Thanks
Joe

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Soft jackfruit variety
« on: April 09, 2021, 08:12:21 PM »
Yes that is it and there are a dew fruiting in Australia. The tree is quite gracile and can get fairly tall but nothing like a regular jack. They fruit at a small size and the fruit are not all round and very small and can be a couple of kg and a little more egg shaped. They are a soft fleshed yellow of quite good taste.

Thanks for the information mate. I'm growing a few jacks now and just added the nangka mini to my collection along with amber and j33. Sounds like it could be an interesting one especially given the small fruit

I have eaten the dwarf jacks recently and they are just small jacks with small foliaged small trees. They too have tough skin with latex even when soft.Crosses can sometimes have much more of a jack taste yes. An hour ago I was looking at 2 jacks and a cross.

I am sure everyone can pick which is the hybrid and I won't insult your intelligence and say which it is......just yet. Anyway I digress. I am yet to find a pure jack with soft latex free skin you can tear open or a chempa x jack with tough skin. I stand by that and that sandpapery growing tips are a good indicator of chempa blood (sap).

Hi Mike,
The dwarf jacks you're referring to are they the nangka mini? If so wanted to know your thoughts of thr fruit?
Cheers

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Cherimoya pruning

I use what we call a standard ' fruit potting mix' which consists of manure, compost, wood material and added trace elements. I tthen add about 10% perlite (not weight but sight) for drainage.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Cherimoya pruning
« on: July 30, 2020, 10:06:52 PM »
Hi all,

Hope all my friends are staying safe during these times.

I'm after some advice on how to best prune this Cherimoya, which I'll then do similar on my other annonas. It's coming into the last month of winter in Australia and I believe the next few weeks would be a good time to prune. I'm looking at keeping the tree fairly compact and will plant in the ground at about 10-11 ft centres.

Thanks
Joe

Hi Joe
I have 6 sweet tart mangoes on the tree now along with malika and NDM both
have mangos.
I would trade you for scions of the pink annona you recently offered seeds from.
I would want the scions next Spring which is around February-March here?
I would need the scions sent fast for better chance grafting.

regards
Mike

Thabks Mike appreciate it. I've sent you a pm

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / American variety mango seeds
« on: May 10, 2020, 11:22:50 PM »
Hello all,

I want to see what all the debate is about regarding some of the well known American varieties of mangoes against some that are commonly grown here in Australia. Over here in Australia, the Kensignton Pride reigns king as probably the best if not one the best mango with others such as Kwan or sam rue do being up there, but I've read through many threads claiming other varieties easily trump the KP.

What I'm looking for is someone that could send me some mango seeds in the coming season of some of the best poly-embryonic mangoes. I believe varieties such as Lemon zest, Orange Sherbet, Sweet Tart are poly but I'm also open to suggestions.

I know it'll be years before I can compare but perhaps my current mangoes will be grafted over if these varieties are as good as what some claim. I'm happy to pay for the seeds.

Thanks
Joe

Hi,
Not sure were you can  get them as I'm in Aus but Arusha fruit well on their own and have a distinct pineapple flavour and are what I'd call on the sweeter side for guanabana.

Good luck!

Does the source for the fruit have a cultivar name? Seems desirable.

I wasn't given any name. These were sent to me from a wholesaler. They do have desirable characteristics and I'll be planting out a few to see how they come

I have for sale seeds from an annona which I've been told is a possible atemoya x reticulata. The flesh is firm right to the edges with no grittiness towards the skin. Seed count is very low, with about 15 seeds in a fruit that weighed 750 grams. The annona is sweet with the berry undertones that are found in good atemoyas. The seeds may not come true to type.

Please note- shipping out of Australia is expensive at the moment as only registered post can be utilised in this time. I can  quote though.

Seeds $2.50 each plus shipping. Minimum 5.
Have limited amounts as fruits didn't have much seed

Hi all,

Has anyone tried growing these and have any information on their cold tolerance?

22
I believe these may be the maroochy red or another red atemoya ehich has become available commercially in Aus

Great report on the amber. I have an amber seedling also which has grown rapidly this season! Was wondering how cold sensitive you find the amber compared to the other jackfruits. I'm in Sydney so we do get cold here but only some rare light frosts.

has anyone tasted nagasakiwase loquat? a have read pretty good descriptions

I have, here in Australia it's actually a pretty easy one to obtain. The fruits are sweet and have great flavor and generally can give 2 lots of fruit at different times of the year, usually being late autumn and spring.

« on: March 25, 2020, 12:56:01 AM »
I would definitely go for a Maha Chanok. They're pretty easy to keep to a manageable size and I don't find them to have much issue with diseases and on top of that they are an awesome tasting mango !
I know you said you don't like Indian mangos, but have you tried an Alphonso? I tried my first one this year and it's definitely one of my favorites. It's a very rich mango with strong taste!
Another one to keep in mind with me bring from Australia, it's pretty hard to go past a Kensington Pride. These mango trees are all over the suburbs here and for good reason. They do become large trees, so diligent pruning would be needed but may come at the expense of fruit some years.

Hope that helps!
