We figured it was time to plant out a 45 gallon Pantin Mamey as a hurricane prep! It even has a few small fruit on it! Hurricane Schmuricane!

Nice pantin mamey tree! :)
-
It should get watered in quite nicely! :)
-
Now that's a Pantin Mamey....congrats!
-
Good looking tree. Gives me some hope that I may actually be able to get mine to fruit in a pot.

Hi PJ,
That Mamey tree looks great 8)
BTW...If I was you, I would put some padding material between the rope and the tree. If you get a storm(Hope not) the rope will not damage the bark ;)
Good luck with the Mamey tree ;)

Seriously though...Harry and you guys down there doing anything special to protect things? Or just hoping for the best? Good luck to all.

Annual tree pruning helps.

Could not see myself doing that to all plants, some of plants are to rare or hard to find replacements for.

I'm not worried about my fruit trees --- they are pretty small. But I have 3 bunches of fruit hanging on the bananas. The Ae Ae and the Goldfinger are tall so they will be tied up to the fence and the palm trees -- 4 way support. The Datil la Lima has an almost mature bunch and will be secured also, even though it fruited at only 6 ft. The 9 ft Pisang Klotek will flower soon and it's the tallest of them all - where's the rope? Naner leaves don't like big winds. All potted stuff gets laid down.
-
I did hear something a couple of days ago about inclement weather threatening a republican convention in NE Florida I thought.Bananas get totally flattened when wind reaches 75mph and leaves are trashed well before then. The bunches still grow and develop on leafless or flat lying stalks (which quickly sunburn).
With pruning trees for storm resistance, short and thick does the trick, but keep it open with just a few thick structural branches.

Nice Mamey. During a strong storm, will the rope "girdle" the tree? I removed my weedwacker guards for fear that the hurricane would cause the guards to girdle the trees.

Hi Mark,
The rope will definitely damage the bark, due to friction. Girdling usually takes a bit longer to happen.

Slide rope through pieces of cut water hose to stave off friction damage.

I am getting ready for some possible rough weather. We could get winds of 50MPH+. I have moved my delicate potted plants & few orchids to the garage and have secured vulnerable branches on my big trees with nylon strapping.

What do you secure the vulnerable branches to? Other branches? Or do you use some kind of staking? Good luck with all!
