Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Tamarind in CA?
« on: May 14, 2018, 09:13:20 PM »
Hey spaugh,

I have one here in national city.  It was a seedling I planted a few years ago.  Flowered last year in 15 gallon pot but no fruit.  I finally put it in the ground last December. Itís still spreading its roots so probably no flower or fruit this year.  My neighbors both have a big trees (my guess would be at least 5-10 years).  Iíve seen flowers on them before too but never went back to see if it turned into fruits.

Hey Simon,

This is one of the fruits we decorate for Tet (Vietnamese new year- same time as Chinese New Year).  I think what the other person meant to tell you was ďthis is a Vietnamese watermelon variety that was grown in Mexico.Ē  They plant and harvest around this time for Tet.

Thereís a lunar festival celebration this Friday-Sunday at the Mira Mesa park.  Donít forget to come out to enjoy the food, music, and games for those in San Diego.

Thuan phat supermarket in little Saigon is selling $43 a box.

It tastes so much better from the tree Simon.  These commercial harvest picked the fruits way too early.  Itís definitely worth growing if we can grow and fruit them here in San Diego.

Good luck dragon! Let us know if yours survive and fruit in the coming years.

Lisa is definitely one of my favorites and deserves a spot in my yard.  Another good variety to fill up the calendar year so you can have a longer season of Annona.

Beautiful fruit guayaba!

Samu,

When you start seeing the fruits developing yellow color like yours, you can start picking them.  Itíll ripe in a week. Pick the remaining on the tree before it cracks.  I also notice when black spots show up on the outside, that means the seeds within are sprouting which damage the flesh.

Good looking fruit dragon.  It looks a lot more ready than the ones I picked.

Thanks dragon, picked my second one cracked yesterday.

Sami- I have no problem with any other atemoya cracking.  Just this ppc which is one for doing so.  Will try dragonís method to see if I can save the last one.

I have three fruits this season and 2/3 already cracked.  Picked this one a few mins ago and left the other two on the tree.  I have a few questions.  Will this one ripe? Should I leave it on the tree longer? And how can I prevent ppc from cracking?

You should graft instead of asking for seed mustang as it'll take a few years to fruit and it might not be true to the mother tree.

Very nice Sam.  I love dr white too.

Do you need to hand pollinate ? Is it chewy?

Probabaly yes.  It's juicy and has a chewy texture to it.  Very similar to an atemoya.  I tried it at ong a few years ago.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Is cherimoya better than atemoya?
« on: October 25, 2017, 08:44:46 PM »
I personally prefer atemoya over cherimoya because of taste and texture.  Cherimoyas are fillers for me. For the cherimoya expert, can I get the names for the varieties below? Got these from my neighbor and they were delicious.  All from seedlings.
