Tropical Fruit Discussion / Garcinia Magnifolia Leaf Tip Dying?
« on: September 30, 2016, 06:25:08 AM »
I seem to be having an issue with my Garcinia Magnifolia seedling, and was hoping someone might know what's going on. My G. Magnifolia put out it's first 2 leaves and was happy, but then about a week ago it started to push the 2nd set and the leaf tips turned black and never fully developed. Then today it also just dropped one of the original leaves despite it still looking green and healthy.

I'm using a coir/perlite mix and water is treated with Bacillus Thuringiensis var. Israelensis to head off any soil gnat problems, so far all clear. I try not to directly water the leaves and only spray the base of the pots. I'm using two 24" fluorescent full spectrum bulbs about a foot above, so I would think the light shouldn't be too intense. I
m also using a seed heating mat so keep them warm.

There's a similar aged G. Hombroniana and G. Livingstonei right next to it under the greenhouse dome, totally lush and happy, so I'm not sure why this little guy isn't doing so hot. The seedling shown below is about 2 months old.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Pawpaw leaf drop?
« on: August 31, 2016, 07:03:49 AM »
A few weeks ago we had a little heatwave and I guess I had let a few plants go a little bit too long without watering. My 2.5 ft tall young pawpaw dropped most of its leaves, and then the remaining few several days later even after watering. I've since been much more careful about regular watering and moved it to a more heavily shaded location, but so far no signs of bouncing back unlike its neighboring white sapote and cherimoyas that also got scortched and dropped some leaves.

Is pawpaw one of those trees that only puts out new leaves in spring and I just have to wait? I scratched the bark and its still green, but the branch tips looking dried out have me worried I should be doing more now or it might not make it until then.

Recipes / Fruit Tea Vodka
« on: November 08, 2015, 08:05:03 PM »

Not much of a "recipe" since you just have to put tea bags in a bottle of vodka, but I thought some of you might appreciate trying this one. Using fruit herbal teas gives the vodka a nice fruit flavor without adding a bunch of sugar like the store bought flavored vodkas. The celestial seasoning flavors seems to work the best, others I've tried like those Lipton pyramid ones didn't have the same kick. My personal favorite is Country Passion Peach, but Wild Berry Zinger is also pretty popular with my friends. But I haven't tried too many other brands, so I'd be interested to hear back any other flavors that turned out well.

Just put 5 bags in a 750mL and let it soak for at least 2-3 hours until it develops a nice color like the bottle shown on the right. Goes great mixed with club soda for sugar free option, or sprite/mountain dew if you want sweetness.

Just be sure people know its still 80 proof (or whatever proof you use), I've had a few friends who just saw the color and assumed it was mixed down, got a nasty surprise when they took a big gulp of straight vodka ;D

I've tried starting seeds but haven't had much luck getting them past sprouting phase. The only nursery I've been able to locate with live bilberry plants is Poyntzfield Herb Nursery in Scotland but they don't seem interested in trying to ship plants to the USA.. anyone else know a source for live bilberry? anyone growing bilberry?
