I believe this  is CC the 5th or 6th year in ground, planted as a 7 or 15 gallon don't recal. It has been a decent bloomer (huge pannicles) but shy when it comes to fruit set. And yes the growth habit takes a lot of work to keep in any type of attractive canopy shape lol last year it gave about a dozen fruit. Year before about 20 or which was the average  for couple years in a row. 20-30 a year would be substantial for the wife and I since we have 4 other trees that are heavy producers. I always remember you talking highly about spirit Rob and I have enjoyed some over the years when I can find some for sale, good mango. Still a big fan of taralay since you introduced me to it. Hopefully Walter never top works his lol My CC already has started dropping lots of pannicles and only see handful of small fruit so far with some blooms yet to develop. Luckily no frost by us.

Pickering and honey kiss are loaded with blooms (especially the honey kiss) Fairchild has largest bloom it has had to date. PPK got pugged this year and lots of growth but nothing this season. coconut cream heavy bloom, very poor fruit set so far as usual. May top work it after this year to something a bit more consistent

I just walked the yard minutes ago.  Just about all early blooms met their demise by Mr. Frost.  A lot of the trees have a post frost bloom that is clean as a whistle so hopefully all will not be lost.  Some fared better than others.  E4 was a total loss.  Was in complete open flower bloom when frost hit it. Pineapple Pleasure was hit hard but has a small amount of unscathed blooms.  Amy, Ambika, Fairchild, Taralay and M. siamensis were not in bloom at all when frost hit and they are in full, clean bloom.

Dies anyone know if M. siamensis will fare well here (fruit wise)?

Yi Xaun is a mess.  Massive flower, some hit by frost and a lot of PM.  Not one fruit.  Its branches are headed for the street and it will be a different variety later this year.
Taralay…..Yummm! I see u didn't list spirit of 76, did you chop it or top work it?

From my understanding, no experience as I have not grown OS, is that OS has a bit more compact growth than PPK and LZ, also has better disease resistance than LZ supposedly.

9
Bovine, the PPK had a very upright growth, and the under canopy was just getting higher and higher by the year. Pretty much got to 15ft even with me fighting to keep it under 15 ft. Yes it is worth the heavy pruning and low yield since only for us. But it was just getting to big to control. Decided to restart it and that will let me reshape it etc...… it has much longer internodes than all my other mango trees.

As someone with limited space and who had advice from BSbullie through my planting, these are my experiences. PPK, first tree we planted, did well for about 5-6 years with a very heavy pruning. But it was definetly affecting total number of fruit. After last couple years the growth was so upright and it was flushing at faster rates to this year had to pretty much pug it back to start it over as we had lost the pruning battle. Takes more than an annual decent pruning to keep I in check. Second tree we planted was coconut cream. While the overall size has been manageable for now, like Rob said, the growth is freaking erratic as hell, and hard to give it a good shape. And the lower branches tend to shoot straight to the ground and either need to be propped up significantly or pruned off. Pickering has been easy to maintain and truly compact. Still takes a good pruning to keep it maintained, but responds well to one pruning. Honey kiss about the same as pickering, although it does seem to grow a hair faster. Fairchild has been easy to maintain at medium sized tree with annual pruning. But the Fairchild has not fruited heavily. Pickering is always a monster producer and the honey kiss does 2nd best. Coconut cream has been super unreliable and has never produced more than 30 fruit on a good year, about a dozen on bad year. PPK always 30-60. Pickering every year has increased crops, this year about 100-120 mangoes and the tree is about 7 ft tall by 7-8 ft wide.

Still have some room I swale and front yard for another 2-3 medium trees. gonna plant more pineapples up front. also have a vertical grow in backyard for fall and spring veggies.

My pickering always in my top 5, partly cuz I pick them as close to tree ripened as possible (always lose a few to drops waiting) but it produces well ever year (always top producer in my yard), always solid flavor, and smallest tree in my yard. Have had zero disease issues. Might not be show stopping on the flavor, but definitely a great all around tree.

Looking for page and dream atemoya, preferably 7 gallon or 15 gallon, but open to 3 gallon. Located in Hollywood, will travel as north as Port St Lucie and Redlands South.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Honey Kiss Mango - Worth it?
« on: August 15, 2020, 09:06:11 PM »
My honey kiss has been great. Latest mango of the season in my yard. Has been easy to maintain to far, nice compact growth. Got it from Walter when he had some 3 gallons 3 years ago. produced in second year about a dozen fruit, and about 20 this season. I prune heavy though, so my production always seems to suffer a bit in all my trees. Just a solid mango with a late season. If I had limited space for 2 trees would plant a pickering and a honey kiss.

Their prices bumped up to $3.50 almost across the board. Drops I think went up to $2. Fruit punch, sugarloaf and few others at Garys at 4 bucks a pound, rest at 2 bucks. I feel like it has gotten harder over the years to just show up and have a good variety to select from. Calling ahead has been key.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Can Rollinia be "pugged" like a mango tree
« on: February 12, 2020, 11:09:19 AM »
I have a rollinia I am debating pulling from the yard or trying to restart it. If it is cut about waist or chest high (its about 20ft tall now) will it come back similar to a mango when pugged?

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Shipping plants to Puerto Rico
« on: January 22, 2020, 03:27:47 PM »
Anyone ever bare root and get the stamps to ship mango trees and such to Puerto Rico? Trying to help cousin get some interesting varieties of mango on his property. Curious as to how complex the process is to get the agricultural stamp etc....

First year for my Wertz producing and I am very happy with the selection. Still have about a dozen left from 2 dozen total fruit it set. Tryin to extend the season as much as I can.

Brother in law sent me these pics of his Pickering. Says he has not fertilized much and water only from sprinklers. Aside from the obvious things I already mentioned to him as far as clearing the base from grass,  mulch. It still looks like some sort of chemical fert burn? And definitely some sort of deficiency, my best guest was magnesium. Any thoughts?

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / Looking for big red annona
« on: September 13, 2019, 09:47:05 PM »
Hoping to track down a big red sugar apple plant hopefully with some size to it. Located in south Broward county

22
Fruit secured and made a new friend in the process. Local guy minutes from my house recommended by person in FB fruit group.  Funny how when you meet a fellow fruit geek at their home it kind of automatically includes a tour of their yard lol

This will sound like an odd request.  I have an uncle who has been in the hospital for ober a month and really not doing very good.  He is far away from home (Puerto Rico) and never got to go back and visit his birth place Cuba.  I have been bringing him mangoes from my trees and from local groves ever since they have been here. He is a fruit lover and figured with little time he has left to spoil him. I would like to get him a fresh ready to eat sugar apple, custard apple or atemoya to eat today or tomorrow. I can pay or can trade a big Rollinia fruit for a couple sugar apples. Anyone close to Hollywood that may have? Just dont have the time to drive down to homestead. Or know of any place in Broward county that sells sugar apple, custard apple or atemoya? Thanks for any leads.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Todays picks Rollinia and kampong mauve

Skhan can meet up somewhere after the storm if it stays aware far enough lol and share one. I like it, but if too ripe gets a bit too slimy for me. I prefer sugar apple over it, but it is a welcome change in flavor and texture after gorging on mango all summer lol
