Hey Florida Mamey Sapote lovers and growers,

I recently had a bunch (10 lb) of mamey sapotes from FL, and they were so good! I asked the vendor which ones they were and they said it was Pantin.

However, after having several of these now, it seems like there were two different varieties, and here are the distinguishing characteristics:

Variety 1:
Larger of the two (size of a nerf football)
Generally 2-3 seeds
Inside is brown with grey streaks / fibers
Texture is good but tends to have a little graininess
Flavor is the classic mamey sapote flavor

Variety 2:
Smaller of the two (size of softball, but still pointed like the mamey should be)
Generally 1-2 seeds
Inside is orange-brown with no streaks
Texture is superb, no graininess and is like a firm custard
Flavor is the classic mamey sapote flavor but with something a bit more indescribably 'tropical' in the flavor profile.

Based on these descriptions, what are your best guesses for Variety 1 and Variety 2?

What papayas are not musky?

I want to like papaya, I really do. I love the smell, and I love dried papaya. But I really don't like the musky taste (same taste that is present in cantaloupe and musk melon). But I have not had a lot of papaya varieties, just generic ones from the supermarket (usually green/yellow outside with orange flesh on inside).

Can anyone recommend varieties that are not musky? I would love to try them!

So I am thinking about generating another list. Obviously the compact mango list had a very specific goal. And many people have generated top 5 / top 10 lists for mangoes just on flavor alone.

But I am asking for people to give top ten mangoes based primarily on taste, but also for season. The idea here would be to spread out the awesomeness as long across the season as possible. There is no restriction on tree size or vigor. So the idea is if you had a brand new yard / had to start over, what would be the ten trees that you want for flavor while trying to spread out the season.

I am suggesting a format for your lists in this fashion:

1. Mango Name -- Flavor Profile --  Season (early, mid, late, or extended like Mahachanok) -- Tree size / vigor (this is helpful for orchard planning)
2. etc.

List away!

Tropical Fruit Buy, Sell & Trade / WANT: West Indian Family Avocado Seeds

I am looking for avocado seeds that come from West Indian family (or hybrids thereof) avocados. Anything basically from Florida that has a big seed would be perfect. Waldin and Lula come to mind immediately.

I got a bunch of Lula seeds late last year. They are huge and they send out extremely vigorous shoots for grafting.  I shared a bunch of the seeds with friends. So I am looking for some more seeds to throw on top of my mound for some more in-situ grafting.

So if you are enjoying any avocados with nice big seeds, please save them!

Who is growing No Mai Tsze lychee?

I have been looking into grafting lychees and Oscar pointed out (back in a post in 2012 I think) that the chance for a good take increases if a lychee is grafted onto a seedling from the same cultivar. And because I am very interested in grafting a No Mai Tsze lychee, I am looking for No Mai Tsze seeds.

So my question (and request) to anyone growing No Mai Tsze lychees: Could you save the seeds? I would love to try sprouting the seeds and grafting onto the seedlings.

I have been reading that green sapote can be grafted onto both mamey sapote and ross sapote / canistel

I guess I have two questions:

1. Is ross sapote == canistel (Pouteria campechiana)? It seems like the answer is yes, or perhaps more accurately ross sapote is a type of canistel.

2. What would be the best seedling to graft a green sapote onto? Green sapote (Pouteria viridis), Mamey sapote (Pouteria sapota), or Canistel (Pouteria campechiana)? Is one seedling much more vigorous? The mamey seeds I planted are large and already had a nice taproot poking out of the shell. But I have not yet seen Green or Canistel seeds, maybe they will have more energy and put out a more vigorous seedling?

Has anyone experienced delayed graft incompatibility grafting green sapote onto mamey or canistel rootstock?

So my little Pickering is a stick with maybe a dozen leaves and 4 small scaffold branches. I got it this winter and would be surprised if it is over two years old.

And it has about 50 BB to marble sized mangoes on it! I am just about to cull all the flower stalks because this tree is WAY too small to hold any fruit. But I just had to take a couple of pics before it did.

What a crazy (and wonderful) mango tree! Can't wait till it gets some size on it so I can have fruit from it next year!

I have a spot in my yard that will get quite a bit of western exposure / afternoon sun. And if possible I would like to put either a Chico or a Mamey here and wondered which would be the better fit?

Does E-4 mango go by any other name?
Has Zill released it yet (no, and no plans to the last I read about it. But that my have changed now)?
Is it possible to get scion wood from it if it is not released?

This last question is an honest 'I don't know'. I don't know if it kosher to ask for budwood if it not released. Certainly not if it is patented or patent pending. But even if there are not plans to do either, perhaps Zill's doesn't want it circulating around?

I am looking to add another citrus to my yard. Here is what I have currently:

- Bearss Lime and Lisbon Lemon grafted onto an unknown roostock (also have Bearss Lime and Lisbon Lemon in 10 gallon pots)
- Trovita Orange and Washington Navel Orange on C-35 rootstock (also have Washington Navel in 10 gallon pot)
- Improved Meyer Lemon on unknown rootstock

Basically I am looking to graft another variety onto my Improved Meyer Lemon. And I am soliciting suggestions

Constraint: It can't be too large of a tree. I am thinking of grapefruit in particular. I love grapefruit and if I had room for one, I would put one in my yard. However, for other varieties it is okay if it is an aggressive grower, I can keep it pruned to be in balance with the Meyer Lemon.

Should I go: tangelo, mandarin, something more exotic? Please let me know what citrus that you have in your yard that if it died you would *have* to replace.

I was wanting to compile a quick list of mangoes that taste like Alphonso mango. Which I would describe as: classic sweet mango flavor that is broken up / paired with an offsetting (and refreshing) piney flavor.

I am looking for Lula avocado seeds. They are big seeds and make a very vigorous salt-tolerant seedling. I have one Lula seedling and I would like to get a few more for some growing experiments.

If you live in an Lula region (like Florida or Texas) and are enjoying some Lulas, could you save the seeds for me? I am looking for maybe a dozen of them, but I will take any amount!

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Sir Prize Avocados from Mexico?

My wife went shopping and picked up an avocado. But it is obviously not a Hass. I am 99% sure it is a Sir Prize (which is an avocado that I really like). About twice as large as a normal Hass, but not quite as large as a Lamb. It has the funny 'ridges' on the stem end. And we just cut it open for breakfast. It has the beautiful creamy texture, medium seed for a large avocado (great flesh/seed ratio), slightly richer nutty flavor than a Hass, and no oxidation whatsoever over a 20 minute period.

The sticker did not say Sir Prize and my wife said the sign at the store was not labeled as Sir Prize.

It is too early in the season for Sir Prize avocados from California (which want to ripen around March-April if I am not mistaken), but the avocado growing region in Mexico can produce avocados nearly year round.

Has anybody heard of Mexican avocado producers growing (and exporting) anything other than Hass?

At any rate, this is exciting because Sir Prize is a superior avocado, I really love them. Not as much as my favorite Reeds, but I can still count on getting those at my local Whole Foods in September.

To all CA grafters:

January is the month for scion exchanges in the Southwest. I am a CRFG member (AZRFG - Arizona Chapter) and will be going to our local scion exchange on Jan 30 (https://www.facebook.com/events/919431738135836/). It is in Mesa and it is open to the public, you do not have to be a CRFG member to participate.

However all the scion exchanges in California will have access to a much better selection of scions than we will have. And I was wondering if anyone going to these events might be on the lookout for some of the scions I am interested in below.
