Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: USPS irradiating packages?
« on: August 13, 2018, 01:38:06 PM »
i can probably find out the answer to this question in a couple of days. I know most outbound/inbound international  LA mail gets x rayed due to shipments of marijuana going out to the rest of the world. Maybe cocaine is getting shipped from Florida and it gets Xrayed? Not too sure. I’ll ask around to see how the domestic mail works.

Did someone take a shit under your tree to get the flies Mark? ;) I've never seen a fly in my yard on a flower. Good luck to you...I know you had a rough winter. Chris

Not that I know of.

I have some really strange pollinators, 100's of them at any given time.  Those are houseflies, have others that have that shiny blue butt....so purty!  Bees, moths, butterflies.  Being in the country helps.

I have the little flies on my flowers too mark.  You aren't alone.

I also had* flies and bees all over my trees.

I'm about 6 miles from the beach and could use some more heat in the summers. When everyone is suffering during heat waves in the summer my trees flourish. I would say maybe 10-15 miles from the beach.

Picture from March 13. Still growing. About 3-4 feet tall right now.

I saw some 15 gallon Gems the last time I went to Atkins Nursery which was like 6 weeks ago. I'm sure they probably still have it.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Reed Avocados in April?
« on: April 03, 2018, 05:33:50 PM »
This produce place has Reeds ready right now, I was curious about why the Reed's would be ready right now instead of summer time (as most websites/info out there suggest).... Sounds like you are kinda on the same boat.

I'm actually trying a similar project. I just put them in a cedar wood box without a bottom. Hopefully I can train them (espalier) with proper pruning. It's Sir Prize, Queen, and Lamb Hass. Sir Prize and Lamb Hass are currently flowering.

I'll add the backyard soon but editing this is getting crazy.
I'm open to trying a different format if anyone has suggestions

I saw you were looking for ideas on other formats...I created a private Facebook page for my trees. Each tree has its own album. Makes it pretty easy to have everything organized and see the growth of trees.

Kahaluu can go as high as 28% oil. We have a whole range of avocados here from watery West Indian types to very high oil types, and everything in between. I believe we have a bigger selection of cultivars here than anywhere else in USA. There are so many available for sale. Unfortunately most vendors don't label the cultivar names.
This poster lists 107 types grown here, and it only scratches the surface of what's available.

Yea I went to the Farmers Market in Hilo about 2 weeks ago and most sellers did not know the names of the avocado varieties they were selling.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: Nabal vs Holiday
« on: January 17, 2018, 01:39:13 AM »
Yes, I have been doing research and I have been reading a couple of articles say that the Nabal is the "ranchers secret" or the "farmers favorite" but the only downside is the heavy alternate bearing....which I don't mind since I have Lamb Hass and Reed as well.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Nabal vs Holiday
« on: January 16, 2018, 09:10:29 PM »
Just out of curiosity which tree/avocado would be the one to have?
Aside from the holiday being a smaller tree...how do they compare? I believe the reed comes from Nabal and the holiday comes from Reed. Are the three just about the same avocado? Also, according to this chart  http://www.ocfruit.com/files/Avocados.htm
they have about the same season. Any suggestions/input is highly appreciated.

This is very sad to hear. All that money in state taxes that we pay and they still want us to do all of the work. ill bring this up to some friends who work in US agriculture. They might have some contacts they can reach out to. Thank you for this information.

Citrus Buy, Sell, & Trade / Re: Wanted: yuzu
« on: December 28, 2017, 09:35:18 AM »
I have a Four Winds Yuzu.  it's been about 4 years since I purchased it from OSH.  it has a cluster of fruits ripen at the moment.  I recall the fruits usually turned yellow in the winter.  not sure why it's different this year.  I am concern with the deadly HLB virus in California and I am not sure on the policy regarding scion distribution.

Whatever happened to your Yuzu tree?

It's because it's one of the few avocados that will grow in Arizona. At least that's what I've gathered from those YouTube videos. I've never tasted the actual avocado.

some I talked to the people from the nursery where the tree came from (end of june) They said that some trees take longer to recover from shipping stress. I guess I still need to wait and hope it will decide soon to put out some new growth.

So what happened? I am curious....

I had some Keitts from Whole Foods for $3 each and some Keitts from "el superior " grocery store assuming mangos were from  Mexico at $1 each....I couldn't tell the difference from the California grown mangos and the Mexico grown. Both were good.

Tropical Fruit Discussion / Re: What's wrong with my Kesar Mango
« on: September 18, 2017, 04:42:05 PM »
That happened to me earlier this year with my Kesar as well. Pruned it and these pictures were the result of pruning. The picture with red editing was taken today and the other picture was taken July.

I have been told by some people working at nurseries that it can be controlled at about 15-20 feet. Is that about the height that you have tried to maintain you Fuerte at?

About right. Reachable thru the right picker. And it produced plenty of quality fruits last winter.

At what height were you trying to keep your fuerte at? I think I can live with it being about 15 feet tall if it is feasible
