Cornelian Cherry (Cornus mas) chill hour requirement?
« on: June 12, 2016, 02:08:34 AM »
Unable to find any data on roughly how many chill hours this species needs for proper flowering and fruiting.
Eugenia luschnathiana = CURUIRI.    Talisia esculenta = PITOMBA
I do not recommend people deal with Fruit Lovers, Prisca Mariya or Fernando Malpartida

I've never seen it listed but mine do fine in zone 7b Raleigh NC. They do take years to reach maturity and I don't find the flavor all that special. They are nice but not as nice as a sweet cherry (which won't grow here).

You can't grow sweet cherries in North Carolina? Is it because of the heat? That is amazing, I always scoffed at the tropical plants we Michiganders miss out on but I never realized we have cold climate fruits that the southerners can't grow well either. ;D

Even sour cherries are marginal. I'm in the piedmont (Raleigh), maybe the folks up in the mountains can get good cherries. Everyone says that the high heat and humidity is was does in sweet cherries here.

Kia ora koutou,

@Mango Stein
Cornus mas need about 400+ h
This is a educated guess from the native distribution area in Europe.
I had the opportunity to taste some. Wild, selected and breed.
IMHO is growing anything else than the very best fruit cultivars a waste of time.
And you need at least two of them for cross pollination.
I would recommend you the following clones:
'Schönbrunner Gourmetdirndl' - origin Austria
'Yellow' - yellow fruits that get way less eaten by birds. Origin Austria
'Jolico' - origin east Europe or Austria
Good luck in getting them.

@TriangleJohn
Mr. Zaiger has breed low chilling hour sweet cherry (Prunus avium) for Florida.

AndyNZ - I have started to switch over to the hybrid bush cherry 'Carmine Jewel'. They do well for me and stay small. The flavor is okay (other bush cherries taste like wild plums to me). I do have a 'Danube' and a 'Kristin' - one is P. avium the other P. cerasus. They are just now reaching fruiting size so whichever one does the best will be the one to stay and then I will have room to try another variety. Thanks for the link.

It's hard to guess how non-rose family stuff calculate chill or if they even use chill.  I'm not that hot, but kind of at the limit for these as they take a beating in summer.  9a-9b is probably near or at the the limit.
